    A single word will help

    Let's think about waiting in line. Whether you're at a band, a supermarket, or an amusement park, waiting in line is probably not your idea of fun. Under what __31__ would you be willing to let another person cut in front of you? Is it possible that just a single word from requesters could __32__ increase that likelihood that you'd say, "Yes, go ahead"?

    Yes, and the word is because. Behavioral scientist Ellen Langer and her colleagues decided to put the persuasive power of this word to the test. In one study, she arranged for a stranger to __33__ some waiting to use a photocopier and ask "Excuse me. I just have five pages. May I use the machine? "In this situation, 60 percent of the people agreed to allow the stranger to go ahead of them. Langer repeated the experiment, but told the person to ask to make 20 copies. This time, when the stranger did not use the word because, only 24 percent agreed, and when the meaningless reason was added, this didn't help to produce any __37__ in agreement at all. However, when the request was made with a good reason, 50 percent of the people asked agreed. These findings serve as a reminder to always be sure to __38__ your request with a reason even when you think the reasons might be pretty clear. Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game.

    People of every culture tell each other fairy tales and the same story often takes a variety of forms in different parts of the world. The universal appeal of these fantastical tales is frequently owed to the idea that they contain warning messages: in the case of Little Red Riding Hood, to listen to your mother, not wander away from the path, and avoid talking to strangers. "It might be what we find interesting about this story is that it's got this survival-relevant information in it," says anthropologist Tehrani at in Durham University in the UK. But his research suggests otherwise. By exploring how fairy tales have changed and evolved as they spread between cultures, he believed he has discovered what truly makes them appealing.

    His analysis focused on Little Red Riding Hood in its many guises(变体), which include another Western fairy tale known as The Wolf and the Kids. Exploring academic collections for variants of these two tales and similar stories from Africa, East Asia and other regions, he ended up with 58 stories recorded from oral traditions.

    First the tested some assumptions about which aspects of the story change least as it evolves, indicating their importance. Folklorists believe that events are more central to the story than characters; however, Tehrani found no significant difference in the rate of evolution of events compared with that of characters. "Certain events are very stable because we recognize them as being crucial to the story, but there are lots of other details that can evolve quite freely," he says. Neither did his analysis support the theory that the middle section of a story is the most conserved part. He found no significant difference in the flexibility of events at the beginning, middle and end.

    But the really big surprise came when he looked at the warning elements of the story. In his analysis, such elements were just as flexible as seemingly unimportant details. What, then, is important enough to be reproduced from generation to generation?

    The answer, it would appear, is horror: horrifying aspects of the story turned out to be the best preserved of all. In many European versions, for example, the wolf feeds Red Riding Hood a meal made from the remains of her grandmother. "There's this brilliant Italian one where the wolf says there's some tortellini(意式饺子), but of course those are her grandmother's ears," says Tehrani. In East Asian variants, a group of sisters spend the night in bed with a tiger and awake to hear it eating the bones of the youngest one. "Those kinds of features are very common in lots of versions of the story" says Tehrani.

    Why are these details treated with such respect by generations of storytellers, when other features are readily substituted? Tehrani has an idea: "In an oral context, a story won't survive because of one great teller. It also needs to be interesting when it's told by someone who's not necessarily a great storyteller." Maybe dining on the remains of a relative is so fascinating that it helps the story remain popular, no matter how badly it's told.

    A driving goal for most websites is for that site to be easily found by people looking for the products or services. One of the ways people may find these sites is via a search engine. With this in mind, companies obviously want their websites to appeal to search engines as well.

    First of all, website content should be unique and timely. Only quality content ensures that customers will frequent your website and also recommend it to friends via links or through social channels. This act of sharing not only gives your site more chances of public exposure but it also helps to push up your search engine rankings, which extends huge psychological implication to other engine users as people tend to follow suit.

    Another key ranking signal that Google and other search engines weigh heavily is page speed and overall site performance. If your site is loaded with too many high-resolution images and videos or other elements, much viewing will be caused. These will make sluggish, slow loading that frustrate and often drive away visitors. It's time to reduce the page size as all the visitors appreciate faster download. Some are even willing to trade better visual experiences for high viewing speed. As user preference stands on top of any search engine's list of priority, search engines will look very favorably upon the speed improvements of the websites.

    In addition, for a hot website, appropriate update frequency is also vital. Although the content is current and up to date when it is first launched, it will soon lose its freshness with the explosion of other various online resources. If the content on your websites has appeared on other sites before, your website is sooner or later to be deserted because of human's nature of having a low boredom threshold(门槛). In turn, your website's search ranking will drop drastically.

    Finally, don't look down on customer experience. Too often people ignore the benefits of creating a viewing experience that is enjoyable.
