Abandoned Amusement Parks Around the World
There are some abandoned amusement parks worldwide. Join us for a look at some of our interests!
Joyland
This amusement park was once the largest theme park in central Kansas. It featured a wooden roller coaster(过山车). It operated for 55 years but closed in 2004 due to financial troubles. Temporarily reopened in 2006, but it only lasted one season. Since then, it's been destroyed and the roller coaster got stolen.
Okpo Land
Located on the Geoje Island of ROK, this park has all the makings of a horror movie. One of the park's main attractions was a duck-themed roller coaster. It's known to have caused at least one serious accident in the late 1990s. After that, It was closed. In 2011, the park was completely pulled down and a hotel is to be built there.
Jungle Habitat
This animal park opened in 1972. Tourists could slowly drive their vehicles along the special roadways as wild animals freely wandered about. It was closed in 1976 due to several problems. Dangerous animals reportedly escaped or injured visitors, and locals hated the traffics. Plus, competition from other parks, combined with poor management, may also have contributed to the ending. It's been for public land use such as hiking and biking trails, so there isn't much left of the old park.
Six Flags New Orleans
The Six Flags company bought the park in 2002. A water park was in the works, but then Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005 and the park has been closed since then. It is currently owned by New Orleans. There is a talk of transforming it into a shopping mall later.

On a cold January evening, Austrew sat in her car in a Nebraska parking lot, wondering whether she was going to a comedy class. For 20 minutes, the 33-year-old journalist and mom of two sat with some thoughts of self-doubt, "I can't do this. I'll be the worst one." Then she turned off the engine, took a few deep breaths, and worked up the courage to go inside with a little hope.
For Austrew, trying comedy was the first small step to improve her self-confidence. "I've lacked self-confidence all my life," she says. "I didn't have the courage to try anything new." So she made a list of all the things she was afraid to attempt and then asked herself, "What if I didn't let my excuses win?" The comedy class was her biggest target and her family firmly supported her.
Her fear disappeared as soon as she walked into the class. Her classmates were also beginners, and she discovered that she was perfectly capable of earning a few laughs and making new friends. Over the next two years, Austrew went on to deal with other what-ifs, including writing a book. "Self-confidence is like a muscle-you have to exercise it constantly," she says.
Some people are blessed with a seemingly unshakable positivity, but most people need to learn how to pull themselves up by their own efforts. Psychologists say we tend to experience our least self-confidence in our teenage years and spend much of our adult lives slowly rebuilding it. Staying positive has been tough in the past year. Since the pandemic(流行病)began, more and more adults have been reported signs of depression or low self-worth. Thankfully, like Austrew, we can also learn to feel better about ourselves and strengthen our feelings of hope. Of course, anyone experiencing the terrible signs should seek professional help.
24. How did Austrew feel before she took the comedy class?
A. Hopeless and helpless. B. Excited and curious.
C. Confident and proud. D. Scared and unsure.
25. Why did Austrew decide to take the comedy class?
A. To build her self-confidence. B. To become modest.
C. To celebrate her recovery. D. To realize her childhood dream.
26. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about Austrew?
A. Her difficulty in learning comedy. B. Her capability of making new friends.
C. Her positive efforts to conquer herself. D. Her fear of getting along with beginners.
27. What will probably be discussed next?
A. Signs of the pandemic. B. Ways to get self-confidence.
C. New medical discoveries about depression. D. People's experiences in their teenage years.

Akram would spend his day taking care of sheep in the grassland. When night fell, he only had one thing to entertain himself-to talk to the stars, and study the shape of the constellation(星座). Afterwards, he would move back to the camp late at night and rest before starting the same routine the next day. In fact, his life formed an endless cycle of traveling between the grassland and a small camp house with a roof made of grass, but that had only been his routine for two years. Before that, he had been living in a small village with his family.
He was just ten but was homeless two years ago, and was forced to travel across his country to the neighboring country because of war, leaving behind a wonderful childhood on his own land.
After settling down in the valley in this new land, he had been used to his new life by accepting that he was taking care of sheep, something that he had never thought of doing before. It was his job to lead the sheep to the grassland and let them cat grass. From time to time, he would take his sheep to a more remote valley, because it reminded him of his village and his grandfather.
Sometimes, he imagined losing himself in those sands blower by the wind, and going to another world, free of suffering, pain and cruelty. In this way he passed his time, keeping his memories alive by simply recalling them again and again, refusing to let them disappear.
