Each time Chinese New Year is approaching, preparations are under way around the world. Here are some Chinatowns for those outside of China wishing to mark the day.
London
Although it may not be as large or as long-built as others, having only become a center for the Chinese community during the 1950s, London’s Chinatown is perfectly formed little firework that knows how to see in the year with a bang. Decorated with red lanterns, previous years have seen shows with acrobatics(杂技), martial arts(武术), dance and opera nearby.
San Francisco
San Francisco’s Chinatown is perhaps the most famous in the United States. The city was the main entry-point for Chinese who had crossed the Pacific to the USA during the early 19th century. Between the Grant Avenue and the Stockton Street, this historic area is a local treasure, attracting more visitors per year than the Golden Gate Bridge.
Bangkok
With an about 100-year-old history, the Thai capital’s Chinatown contains complex streets offering all kinds of tasty treats, clothes, toys and antiques. Sunday market days are such a good time to get the full atmosphere of the neighborhood. The area is also known for its gold dealers, whose shops line the road.
Mauritius
Found in Port Louis, this Mauritian Chinatown shows the island nation’s rich multicultural diversity. Established in the early years of the 20th century by settlers from China, its tiny shops and restaurants serve locals and visitors. During the Chinese Spring Festival, the most exciting sight is the Dragon Dances on Rue Royale when Chinese musicians and dancers perform the traditional lion dances through the streets.

My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t got any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.
Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static (静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it. I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles (肌肉) shaking my set.
When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.
24. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?
A. He got an older model than he had expected.
B. He couldn’t return it when it was broken.
C. He failed to find any movie shows on it.
D. He could have bought it at a lower price.
25. Which of the following can best replace the phrase “signed off” in Paragraph 1?
A. provided fewer channels B. ended all their programs
C. showed all-night movies D. changed to commercials
26. How did the author finally get his TV set working again?
A. By shaking and hitting it. B. By turning it on and off.
C. By having it repaired. D. By switching channels.
27. How does the author sound when telling the story?
A. Curious B. Humorous C. Cautious D. Anxious
C
The endangered pandas in Qinling Mountains might face a new threat(威胁): the loss of their food, bamboo, which makes up 99% of their meals.
Adult pandas spend most part of the day eating bamboo and have to take in at least 40 pounds a day to stay healthy. However, a new study published in Nature and Climate Change warned that they may soon find their food gone because most of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains might disappear by the end of the century as a result of rising temperature worldwide.
A team made up of researchers from Michigan State University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has studied the effects of climate change on the bamboo in Qinling Mountains. They have found that bamboo is very sensitive to climate changes. “80% to 100% of the bamboo would be gone if the average temperature increases 3.5 degrees worldwide by the end of the century.” said Liu Jianguo, one of the report’s authors.
He added, “This is how much the temperature would rise by 2100 even if all countries will keep their promises in the Paris Agreement. But you know what is happening around the world.”
In recent years, China has been trying its best to protect the endangered pandas by setting up more and bigger natural reserves.
“But it is far from being enough and the endangered pandas need cooperation from the rest of the world, because their future is not just in the hands of the Chinese,” said Shirley Martin from World Wildlife Fund but not a member of the team.
The Qinling Mountains, in the southwest of China, are home to about 260 pandas. That is about 13% of the China’s wild panda population. In addition, about 375 are living in research centers and zoos in China.
28. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Pandas in Qinling Mountains are just threatened by the loss of food.
B. Qinling Mountains cannot provide enough bamboo for the pandas.
C. Lots of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains will probably disappear.
D. Pandas have already eaten 99% of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains.
29. What does Liu Jianguo mean?
A. China needs more help from World Wildlife Fund.
B. Bamboo is sensitive to the changes of temperature.
C. It is difficult to control the temperature rise within 3.5℃.
D. China is making great efforts to protect the pandas.
30. How many wild pandas are there in China?
A. About 260 B. About 2,000 C. About 635 D. About 2,635
31. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. A New Threat Faced by the Pandas B. Necessity to Change Pandas’ Food
C. Efforts Made to Save Pandas D. The Disappearance of Bamboo
D
Can you imagine living without cars, computers or telephones? Some people in the rainforest and mountains of Venezuela and Brazil do just that. One tribe, the Yanomami, has lived the same way for thousands of years. They only have numbers for one, two and more than two, and they have never invented the wheel. But they have also been called some of “the last free people on earth.”
In the late 1920s, researchers found a tribe of people untouched by modern society. This was the first reported meeting with the Yanomami, who were living deep within the South American jungle.
Scientists agree that their location deep in the forest helped their culture unchanged. Until recently, most Yanomami still lived in isolated regions. Everything they needed came from the rain forest. They hunted, fished and farmed the land. Then a discovery brought the outside world to them. And along with it came deadly changes.
Gold was discovered in Yanomami in the 1970s. By 1987, around 80, 000 miners had moved into the area. In a fight to take over the land, they killed some Yanomami. They also brought into new sicknesses, including the common cold and malaria. Today over 62 percent of Yanomami show signs of malaria.
Just as deadly were the results of mining, including polluted streams and cleared forests. Within just seven years their population fell by 20 percent.
Today governments and international organizations are looking for ways to protect the Yanomami. The Brazilian government has reserved a large area of land for the tribe. And in 1990, Brazil ordered all the miners out of Amazon region. Yet these things might not be enough. Gold is so valuable that miners keep going back and harming the Yanomami’s way of life.
32. When was the existence of the Yanomami first discovered?________.
A. In the 1970s B. In 1990 C. In 1987 D. In the late 1920s
33. Which of the following statements is true?________
A. The Yanomami is the only remaining “untouched” people on earth.
B. Before miners arrived, the Yanomami had never suffered from malaria.
C. The Yanomami learned to use wheels long before.
D. Most Yanomami know the exact meaning of the number 8.
34. Which of the following was NOT the reason for the sharp decrease of the Yanomami’s
population? _________.
A. Their living environment was destroyed
B. They were killed in the fight
C. They starved to death
D. They were killed by the new illnesses brought by miners
35. What can be inferred from the passage?________.
A. Miners are a great threat to the protection of the Yanomami
B. Gold mining made no difference to the Yanomami
C. The discovery of gold is beneficial to the Yanomami
D. Nowadays no miners remain in Amazon Region

Dear John,
I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from TikTok addiction. Actually, it is commonly seen that more and more teenagers get crazy about TikTok and spend too much time watching and sharing videos online, which makes them unable to focus on study.
Therefore, I think it is necessary for you to take actions. You should have some hobbies, such as reading, listening to music or playing chess. Besides, you had better make some friends by face-to-face communication.
I sincerely hope that these ideas can help you with the problem.
Yours,
