After two nights of staying in her apartment in Houston without power, Felicia Maten had no running water, her fingers and toes hurting from the cold. She huddled under blankets with her mother and daughter, together using their breath to warm themselves against freezing temperatures that weren't letting up.
She drove around looking for a hotel. But she couldn't find an available room and the roads were dangerous. Finally, a neighbor suggested she go to Gallery Furniture. The owner, Jim “Mattress Mack ” McIngvale, opened one of his local stores as a shelter for Texas residents displaced by the winter storms.
During the three days the makeshift shelter was open, thousands of people came in for food and warmth and hundreds slept over. “It meant so much to have somebody who doesn't even know us care that much,” Maten said. “That man is full of love.”
This isn't the first time McIngvale has opened his doors to people in weather emergencies. He did so during Hurricanes Katrina in 2005 and Harvey in 2017.
McIngvale began preparing for the winter storm a week in advance by buying 15,000 gallons of diesel to power the store's generator for a week or so. He took Covid-19 precautions by providing security hand sanitization（杀 菌）and masks.
McIngvale got the word out about the shelter through the business' social media following and news coverage. He and his employees made specific accommodations for people, such as those with babies who need bottles warmed or senior citizens who need oxygen tanks plugged in.
“He was serving food, handing out water, going around checking on people.” said Jacy Wadhams, another Texas resident living in the area for 15 years. “He really takes pride in what he does. He's an amazing person.”
“We believe that we all have responsibility for the well-being of the community and when times get tough we try to open our doors and let people come in and regroup.” said McIngvale.

Researchers at CU Boulder have developed a wearable device that changes the human body into a biological battery. The device is stretchy（弹性的）enough that you can wear it like a ring, sport band or any other thing that touches your skin. It also taps into a person's natural heat employing thermoelectric generators to change the body's internal temperature into electricity. "In the future, we want to be able to power your wearable electronics without having to include a battery,” said Jianliang Xiao, an associate professor at CU Boulder.
The concept may sound like something out of The Matrix film series, in which a race of robots have enslaved humans to harvest their precious organic energy. Xiao and his colleagues aren't that ambitious: Their devices can generate about 1volt （伏特）of energy for every square centimeter of skin space — less volt per area than what most existing batteries provide but still enough to power electronics like watches or fitness trackers.
Scientists have previously experimented with similar wearable devices, but Xiao's is stretchy, can heal itself when damaged and is fully recyclable — making it a cleaner alternative to traditional electronics. "Whenever you use a battery, you're depleting（消耗）that battery and will, eventually, need to replace it.” Xiao said. “The nice thing about our device is that you can wear it, and it provides you with constant power.”

Plastic pollution has long been a problem, but now it's gotten to a new height literally. Microplastic, referring to plastic fragments and particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter, have been found on Mount Qomolangma as high as 8 440 meters above sea level, just 408. 86 meters below the peak of the mountain, according to a recent study published in the journal One Earth.
“These are the highest microplastics ever discovered so far.” Lead author Imogen Napper from the University of Plymouth, UK, said in a statement. Scientists collected snow and water samples from 19 different locations from 4 200 meters above sea level all the way up to the summit of Mount Qomolangma. They found microplastics in all the water samples and part of the snow samples. The most polluted sample was from the Base Camp in Nepal, where most human activities on the mountain are concentrated. It had 79 particles of microplastics per liter of snow.
But how have these fragments made it all this way and in such a great abundance? The answer is apparent human activities. It is climbers who bring plastic products to the mountain. Even if they don't litter, just walking for 20 minutes or opening a bottle of water can release microplastics into the environment.
The harsh fact is that plastic pollution has reached even the most remote places on Earth. Researchers even found a plastic bag at the deepest point in the world's oceans-in the Mariana Trench, located in the Pacific Ocean. The bag is the same as the ones commonly used in grocery stores. Even covered in ice, the Arctic is still a victim of plastic pollution. A 2020 report published in Nature suggests that there are 2 000 to 17 000 plastic particles per cubic meter in Arctic ice cores, and between 0 to 18 microplastic particles per cubic meter from the water beneath ice floes. Experts think microplastics may be transported by air and then reach the North Pole in snowfall.
“What we don't yet fully know is the potential problems these tiny pieces of plastic could be having to ecosystems, to organisms and even to our own health as well,” said Christian Dunn of Bangor University, UK. “Then what can we do? We need to start focusing on deeper technological solutions that focus on microplastics, like changing fabric design and including natural fibers instead of plastic when possible.”

After two nights of staying in her apartment in Houston without power, Felicia Maten had no running water, her fingers and toes hurting from the cold. She huddled under blankets with her mother and daughter, together using their breath to warm themselves against freezing temperatures that weren't letting up.
She drove around looking for a hotel. But she couldn't find an available room and the roads were dangerous. Finally, a neighbor suggested she go to Gallery Furniture. The owner, Jim “Mattress Mack ” McIngvale, opened one of his local stores as a shelter for Texas residents displaced by the winter storms.
During the three days the makeshift shelter was open, thousands of people came in for food and warmth and hundreds slept over. “It meant so much to have somebody who doesn't even know us care that much,” Maten said. “That man is full of love.”

Researchers at CU Boulder have developed a wearable device that changes the human body into a biological battery. The device is stretchy（弹性的）enough that you can wear it like a ring, sport band or any other thing that touches your skin. Plastic pollution has long been a problem, but now it's gotten to a new height literally. Microplastic, referring to plastic fragments and particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter, have been found on Mount Qomolangma as high as 8 440 meters above sea level, just 408. 86 meters below the peak of the mountain, according to a recent study published in the journal One Earth.
“These are the highest microplastics ever discovered so far.” Lead author Imogen Napper from the University of Plymouth, UK, said in a statement. Scientists collected snow and water samples from 19 different locations from 4 200 meters above sea level all the way up to the summit of Mount Qomolangma. They found microplastics in all the water samples and part of the snow samples. The most polluted sample was from the Base Camp in Nepal, where most human activities on the mountain are concentrated. It had 79 particles of microplastics per liter of snow.
But how have these fragments made it all this way and in such a great abundance? The answer is apparent human activities. It is climbers who bring plastic products to the mountain. Even if they don't litter, just walking for 20 minutes or opening a bottle of water can release microplastics into the environment.
The harsh fact is that plastic pollution has reached even the most remote places on Earth. Researchers even found a plastic bag at the deepest point in the world's oceans-in the Mariana Trench, located in the Pacific Ocean. The bag is the same as the ones commonly used in grocery stores. Even covered in ice, the Arctic is still a victim of plastic pollution. A 2020 report published in Nature suggests that there are 2 000 to 17 000 plastic particles per cubic meter in Arctic ice cores, and between 0 to 18 microplastic particles per cubic meter from the water beneath ice floes. Experts think microplastics may be transported by air and then reach the North Pole in snowfall.
“What we don't yet fully know is the potential problems these tiny pieces of plastic could be having to ecosystems, to organisms and even to our own health as well,” said Christian Dunn of Bangor University, UK. “Then what can we do? We need to start focusing on deeper technological solutions that focus on microplastics, like changing fabric design and including natural fibers instead of plastic when possible.”

W: I’m not asking your little sister to clean my floors, Dave. Anyway, it wasn’t as hard as you think. I have been using a Roomba recently.
M: Oh, that cleaning robot? I’m jealous, Sandra. I wanted one, but I didn’t have 500 extra dollars.
W: I know. They’re so expensive. I got mine from my boss when I was Employee of the Year two years ago.

M: Where were you this morning, Julie? Mom and I were going to take you to school.
W: Oh, thanks, Dad. I thought you saw my note. I took the bus early in the morning.
M: An early bus? I thought you were a night person.
W: We had band practice. We’re playing at the game next month, and I was excited. But now…
M: Uh-oh. What happened?
W: It’s the uniforms. I saw them, and now I’m sorry I ever started playing the flute.
M: Ugly? I’m sure you’d look great in anything, Julie.
W: It’s not that. They’re made out of wool. Wool! In August!
M: Dear Lord! You’ll all get way too hot.
W: Well, it’s worse for the saxophone players.
M: I guess the drummers have the same problem.
W: Yes. They complained, but the school doesn’t have money to buy new clothes for us.

W: Is that your dog? He’s not very friendly.
M: Yeah, that’s Sammy. I’m sorry he’s a little anxious. He’s usually quite playful, but he had a rough day.
W: How does a dog have a rough day? Don’t they just chase rabbits and sleep?
M: Well, I took him to a dog park, and a larger dog bit him. I’m worried Sammy will be afraid of strangers forever.
W: Well, that explains it. Don’t worry about it. Why don’t I sit over here on this chair and calm him down?
M: Thanks for understanding. I’ll get you something to drink.
W: Thanks, but I’m sorry I’m early. I really thought the invitation said 7 o’clock.
M: That’s all right. Most people start dinner parties at 6:30, but mine’s an hour later because everyone’s going to the football game.
W: Oh, dear. I wish I were a fan. I should have known that.

M: Waitress! I think there’s something wrong with our bill.
W: No, I don’t think so…$10 for the drinks, 15 for the small plate, and 20 for the main dish.
M: What? I knew the cheese sticks were 15. I always order cheese sticks, but I thought the main dish was $10.
W: Oh, that explains it. You think the bill should be $35.
M: Yes, exactly. I was wondering what happened to the rest of my change. I should have gotten back 15, not 5!
W: I understand. Sometimes people aren’t honest, but I think this was an honest mistake. Didn’t you order the sea cucumbers for dinner?
M: Yes, and they were delicious. Best cucumbers ever! I’m so glad I’m a vegetarian.
W: Sir, I am so sorry. Have you ordered sea cucumbers before? They aren’t vegetables, you know.
M: Really? I thought it was a vegetable that grew in the ocean.
W: Nope. They’re seafood.
M: Oh, no!
W: I’m so sorry, sir. I assumed you understood what you were ordering.
M: Actually, Jenny took my order. Maybe I can talk to her.
W: She had an emergency at home. I came in to take over her tables. But I’m sure if I talk to the manager, we can give you a discount for the order.
M: That’s OK.

Good morning, Brooklyn High School, and welcome to another year. I’m Harvey Briggs, the school director, and I’ll be broadcasting these morning announcements every day at 8:15 a.m. in the school hall. And of course, we have a poster wall in the cafeteria with sign-ups for school activities. Don’t forget to sign up for the football team. The team loves Bill Wyatt, our head coach, and many of our former football players have gone to good colleges for free because of their skills. This year, we have a new system for our lunch menu. The food we offer each week will be emailed to your parents. They will choose lunch food for you and pay through their ParentsDirect account. One last announcement for today: We have a new smartphone policy. Students will not be allowed to bring smartphones into the teaching buildings. We’ve provided special lockers inside the school gate to keep your phones safe while class is in session. If you need to contact family members during class hours, come to the office and talk to the school staff. We hope you all have a successful school year!
