B A few years ago, I moved to Aurora, Ont. with my boyfriend and I longed to make friends in my new neighborhood. Where we lived, the houses were jammed together so tightly. But the irony (讽 刺) of living so close was that no one actually talked to each other; as in an open-concept (开放概念) office, they pretend they can't hear or see each other to maintain at least an illusion (幻觉) of privacy. It was not so easy to make friends as an adult. I was about to give up when I caught sight of a beautiful, tall blonde taking out her recycling. She walked with confidence—even her ponytail bounced. I thought, “I recycle too! We have so much in common!” The question was, how would we meet? What would I say? So I thought, “What if I just happened to be jogging by?” I put on my running shoes, but after a few times around the block, sweating, I didn't see her. I decided to seize on the one thing I already knew about her--she takes out her blue bin. The following day, I woke up a little earlier than usual. A little after 8 a.m., the garbage truck appeared and the blonde appeared. I grabbed a bin and made my way to the end of my driveway. “Just act natural, Megan,” I told myself. “Good morning. How are ya?” I said, cool as a cucumber. “Good. And you?” she replied. “Doing well...I am a new comer, just a broadcaster. I talk for a living. Clearly!” “Interesting,” she said. As we both walked away, I turned and called out, “Oh, and by the way, I'm Megan.” “Michelle,” she replied. I walked back inside, wearing a giant smile. Our “coincidental” recycling meet-ups continued for a few weeks until I finally gathered my courage to ask her to watch The Bachelor with me and she said yes. That night, after we got everything ready, we settled on the couch and proceeded to drink wine, have our buffet, analyze television relationships, tell stories about our own and laugh our faces off. We “found what we'd been looking for": a new friend to fall spiritually in love with.24.What can be learned from Paragraph 2? A. The author lived in a small house. B. C “When I was 16 years old, I was scuba diving (水肺潜水) in Greece, but I was disappointed because I saw more plastic bags than fish. "These are the words of Boyan Slat, 25, an engineer who designed the world's first ocean plastic cleanup system. Every year, over 8 million tons of plastics end up in our oceans. These can take up to 500 years to break down. If let alone, sea animals become entangled (缠绕的) in them and can even die if the plastics are taken in. Worse, humans can be affected when these plastics break down. "Smaller pieces enter the food chain, and that's a food chain that includes us humans,” Slat said.In 2018, the World Economic Forum predicted that the weight of ocean plastics will match the weight of all the fish in our oceans by 2050. To prevent this depressing reality, Slat created The Ocean Cleanup in 2013 and put his plan for an ocean plastic cleanup device into action. After years of research and development in the Netherlands, a device called System 001/B successfully started gathering plastic on Oct 2, 2019. The device uses a 600-meter-long "C” shaped tube to gather all the floating rubbish. Unlike other cleanup methods, the system floats freely according to the direction of the waves, which allows waste to flow into and stay within the device. A sea anchor is attached to either end. This slows down the system as it floats through the water and allows the faster-moving rubbish, carried by the waves, to flow into its mouth. System 001/B can also collect waste below the surface using a 3-meter-deep skirt (挡板) attached to the end. After being gathered, the rubbish will be dragged back to shore by boat and recycled. Currently, the system operates in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area that is three times the size of France. And the Ocean Cleanup expects more to be able to clear 50 percent of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in five years. It remains to be seen if this dream will become a reality, but it is undeniable that humanity must work together to reduce our plastic use and repair the damage our waste has caused. “We are starting to see a young generation that gets that and is excited about a sustainable future, but the question still comes down to: Are we going fast enough, and how much damage will have been done before we get there?" Slat said.28.Which of the following statements is true according to the first two paragraphs? A. Slat took up scuba diving at the age of 16. B. Slat showed great interest in ocean environments. C. Plastics are a great threat to sea animals and humans. D. It doesn't take plastics long to break down in the ocean.29.What does the underlined part “this depressing reality” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Many sea creatures take in plastics. B. Humans are influenced by plastics. C. Ocean plastics are difficult to get rid of. D. The amount of ocean plastics will reach a new peak.30.What do we know about System 001/B? A. It floats in a fixed direction. B. It started collecting plastics about two years ago. C. It collects and recycles the rubbish at the same time. D. It aims to clear up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in five years.31.What is Slat's attitude towards the future of the environment? A. Concerned. B. Indifferent. C. Positive. D. Tolerant. D As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more. Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping (录像) the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents' efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. "In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children's 1Q scores,”Lewis says. "And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is.” The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings (兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. "Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it's the middle child.”There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: "When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”32. The writer's purpose in writing the text is to ________. A. show the relationship between parents and children B. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table C. report on the findings of a study D. give information about family problems33.Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ____. A. they are busy serving food to their children B. they are busy keeping order at the dinner table C. they have to pay more attention to younger children D. they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family34.By saying "Middle children are invisible" in paragraph 3, Lewis means that middle children_________.
