Everybody has had at least one experience from which he knows the meaning of life. This time took place several years ago, but seems as if it just happened.

On an afternoon several years ago, my brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister's dress and picked out a beautiful skirt. “Jane bought this the first lime we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion.” He said. I guess this was the occasion: it was the funeral of my sister, after her unexpected death.

He took the skirl and put it on bed, with the other clothes we were taking to the funeral. Then he closed the drawer and turned to me, “Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you are alive is a special occasion.”

I am thinking about his words, and they've changed the way I live my life. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less lime in committee meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a kind of experience to enjoy, not to suffer. “Someday” and “One of these days” are losing their importance on my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now.

Ever since that day, I have been trying very hard not to put off, hold back or save anything that, would add laughter and color to our lives. Every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that every day, every minute, every breath, truly is a gift. So cherish every day and find the true meaning of your life.

41Why did Jane buy the beautiful skirt but didn't wear it?

AShe waited for a special occasion to wear it on. BShe wanted to keep it for someone else.

CShe saved it until she grew up. DShe would give it to herself as a gift someday.

42What does the underlined word “cherish” mean?

    ASave BWaste COwn DTreasure

43From his experience, the author learns that ______.

Aeverybody can have a happy life through efforts

Bevery day in our lives is worth cherishing

Cenjoying ourselves is the most important thing

Deverybody will have something left to do after death

44What does the author write this passage for?

ATo show how to make good use of every clay in life.

BTo explain the true meaning of his brother-in-taw's words.

CTo tell people to find the meaning of life and cherish every day.

DTo encourage people to waste time and enjoy themselves.

45What's the best title for this passage?

AEvery Day Is a Gift BMy Sister Jane

CWhat Is the Meaningful Life Like DThe Most Important Time in Your life

In its early history, Chicago had floods frequently, especially in the spring, making the streets so muddy that people, horses, and carts got stuck. An old joke that was popular at the time went something like this: A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street. Asked if he needs help, he replies, “No, thanks. I've got a good horse under me.”

The city planner decided to build an underground drainage (排水) system, but there simply wasn't enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city.

An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced me the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city's streets by as much as 12 feet.

This of course created a new problem: dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago. Building owners were faced with a choice: either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second stories into main floors, or hoist the entire buildings to meet the new street level. Small wood-frame buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like Tremont Hotel, which was a six-story brick building?

That's where George Pullman came in. He had developed some house-moving skills successfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel, Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews (螺旋千斤顶) beneath the building's foundation. One man was assigned to operate each section of roughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman's signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly. Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stay open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn't even notice anything was happening. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago's early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago's waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city's next step was to clean the polluted river.

46The author mentions the joke to show ______.

Ahorses were fairly useful in Chicago

    BChicago's streets were extremely muddy

CChicago was very dangerous in the spring

Dthe Chicago people were particularly humorous

47The city planners were convinced by Ellis Chesbrough to_______.

Aget rid of the street dirt Blower the Chicago River

Cfight against heavy floods Dbuild the pipes above ground

    48The underlined word “hoist”in Paragraph 4 means “_______”.

    Achange Blift

    Crepair Ddecorate

49What can we conclude about the moving operation of the Tremont Hotel?

AIt went on smoothly as intended.

BIt interrupted the business of the hotel.

CIt involved Pullman turning ten jackscrews.

DIt separated the building from its foundation.

50The passage is mainly about the early Chicago's ______.

Apopular life styles and their influences

    Benvironmental disasters and their causes

    Cengineering problems and their solutions

    Dsuccessful businessmen and their achievements

Art is everywhere. Any public space has been carefully designed by an artistic mind to be both functional and beautiful. Why, then, is art still so widely considered to be "the easy subject" at school, insignificant to wider society, a waste of time and effort?

Art can connect culture with commercial products in a way that not many other things can; art generates money and holds significant emotional and cultural value within communities. When people attend a concert, they are paying for music, sure, maybe even hotel rooms, meals, and transport, but they also gain an incredible experience, a unique atmosphere and a memory that will go through the rest of their lives. People don't just want material things anymore, they want to experience lifethe arts are a perfect crossover(交迭)between culture and commerce.

Furthermore, the arts can bring communities together, reducing loneliness and making people feel safer. Social bonds are created among individuals when they share their arts experiences through reflection and discussion, and their expression of common values through artworks in honour of events significant to a nation's experience.

The arts clearly have a pretty positive impact on physical and psychological health. It is found that people who frequent cultural places or participate in artistic events are more likely to gain good health compared to those who do not; more engagement with the arts is linked to a higher level of people's wellbeing. The Royal Society of Public Health discovered that music and art, when used in hospitals, help to improve the conditions of patients by reducing stress, anxiety and blood pressure.

Children who are involved with the arts make greater achievements in their education: those engaged with drama have greater literary ability while others taking part in musical practice exhibit greater skills in math and languages. Kids with preference for the arts have a greater chance of finding employment in the future. Participating in the arts is essential for child development; encouraging children to express themselves in constructive ways could help to form healthy emotional responses in later life.

Vital to human life, art is celebrated and used by nations across the world for various purposes. Life without art would be boring and dead still, for art is a part of what makes us human.

51Art products differ from most other commercial products because .

Amost people purchase them for collection

Bthey are more expensive and less accessible

Cthey have both commercial and cultural values

Dtheir prices may climb up as time passes

52By sharing their arts experiences, community members can .

Akeep the community safe from illnesses

Bdevelop a stronger tie between them

Clearn to appreciate their own works of art

Doffer honourable solutions to their problems

53What can we learn about people who are involved in artistic activities?

    AThey enjoy better living conditions.

BThey like to compare themselves with others.

CThey are particularly good at both music and art.

DThey tend to be healthier physically and mentally.

54How does kids' engagement with the arts benefit them?

AIt promotes their academic performance and emotional growth.

BIt gives them more confidence in exhibiting their learning skills.

CIt inspires their creativity in designing their future career.

DIt helps to make responsible people out of them.

55What is the best title for this passage?

    AHow Art Cures Our Hearts

    BArt: A Blessing to Humankind

    CHow Art Benefits Communities

    DArt: A Bridge Between Cultures

    四、阅读表达

    阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

My name is Clara. I still remember that chilly December day, sitting in science class. I’d finished a worksheet early and picked up a Time for Kids magazine. A piece of news caught my eye. NASA was holding an essay contest to name its Mars rover (火星探测器). Before I even knew anything else about it, a single word flooded my 11-year-old mind: Curiosity.

I couldn’t wait for the bell to ring so I could get started on my essay. That afternoon, I raced home, sat down at the computer, and typed until my fingers ached. “Curiosity is an everlasting flame that burns in everyone’s mind…”

Five months later, my mom received a phone call, and immediately, a wide smile spread across her face.

On August 5, 2012, at 10:31 p.m., the rover named Curiosity touched down safely on the surface of Mars, and I was honored to have a front-row seat in NASA

Curiosity is such an important part of who I am. I have always been fascinated by the stars, the planets, the sky and the universe. I remember as a little girl, my grandmother and I would sit together in the backyard for hours. She’d tell me stories and point out the stars. Grandma lived in China, thousands of miles away from my home in Kansas, but the stars kept us together even when we were apart. They were always there, yet there was so much I didn’t know about them. That’s what I love so much about space.

People often ask me why we go to faraway places like Mars. My answer is simple because we’re curious. We human beings do not just hole up in one place. We are constantly wondering and trying to find out what’s over the hill and beyond the horizon.

56How did Clara get the news about the essay contest? (no more than 10 words)

57Why did Clara have a front-row seat in NASA? (no more than 10 words)

58What does Clara remember about the time spent with Grandma? (no more than 15 words)

59What does the underlined phrase “hole up” mean? (1 word)

60In your opinion, why is curiosity important? (no more than 20 words)

    61Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to apply to be a volunteer for the Chinese Painting Exhibition which will be held in your art gallery.

I think I am qualified for the job, because I have learned Chinese painting since childhood. Equally important, I am fluent in both Chinese and English, so I have no difficulty in communicating with others. If I am lucky enough to be chosen as a volunteer, I can show visitors around the gallery and answer their questions about the paintings, after some proper training.

I would be very grateful if you could offer me the opportunity. I am looking forward to your reply.

    Yours,

    Li Hua
