He trains every other day, dances and plays hockey and he recently cuts down on alcohol and chocolate. He said, "I've heard alcohol can lead to dementia and I don't want that. I've cut down to one glass of wine every other day. I now have to stay as fit as I can be to keep up my lifestyle."

There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food from our family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress.
On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity. Immigrants bring it wherever they go, and it is a symbol of pride for their culture and means of coping with homesickness.
Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available, so the taste and flavor can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes about the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavors that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes.
We should embrace our heritage(传统)through our culture’s food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it. Food is a window into culture, and it should be treated as such.
8.What’s the function of food mentioned in the article?
A.To help motivate homesickness. B.To show national identity.
C.To reflect a country’s history. D.To show a community’s superiority.
9.What does the underlined “it”in Paragraph2 refer to?
A.The specific traditional food. B.The national culture.
C.A traditional expression of food. D.The old-fashioned taste.
10.Why do some immigrants have to change the original dishes in their restaurant?
A.To attach cultural importance to their dishes.
B.To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil.
C.To make the dishes popular among customers.
D.To present their own food culture in a new way.
11.What’s the author’s attitude towards different food cultures?
A.Negative. B.Balanced.
C.Unfair. D.Unchangeable.
We humans love to stare into our smart devices. We gaze for hours-about 10 hours and 39 minutes a day-at our computers, smartphones, tablets and televisions. Is all this staring bad for us? It might be mainly because as we stare at our devices we are exposing ourselves to blue light.
Blue light is a type of electromagnetic(电磁的) radiation with a very short wavelength that produces a high amount of energy. While it’s true that light can damage our eyes under certain circumstances, there’s no scientific evidence suggesting that blue light is harmful to our eyes. But many people still think it is, which is why blue-light-blocking glasses are so popular. So do the glasses work?
“Everyone is very concerned that blue light may be causing damage to the eye, but there’s no evidence that it may be causing serious damage,” Dr. Rahul Khurana, clinical spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, told Business Insider.
Blue light exposure is nothing new. In fact, the sun is the largest source of blue light. Moreover, blue light is also present in LED light. But if blue light isn’t harmful, then why are we constantly rubbing our eyes when we’re looking at our screens? The answer is eyestrain(眼疲劳): More than 60 percent of people experience eye problems associated with digital eyestrain. And blue light, it seems, isn’t the cause. Instead, our eyes are so strained because most of us blink less when we stare at our digital devices. So if eyestrain is the issue, blue-light-blocking glasses are probably of little use.
12.What do we know about blue light?
A.It is a kind of nuclear radiation.
B.It has the shortest wavelength.
C.It may come from electronic devices.
D.It consumes a great deal of energy.
13.What causes the popularity of blue-light-blocking glasses?
A.Evidence of their benefits to eyes.
B.Belief in blue light's harmful effect.
C.Widespread use of smart devices.
D.Scientific understanding of blue light.
14.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.Blue light exposure is hardly avoidable.
B.Eye problems are not easy to deal with.
C.Blue light may connect with tired eyes.
D.Rubbing eyes makes people strained.
15.According to the text, wearing blue-light-blocking glasses may be________.
A.tiring B.harmful
C.useless D.beneficial

Think about how much reading you do every day. When you look at it, you might find that reading is the work-related skill that you use most often! 16. After all, if we can read and comprehend textbooks, then aren’t we good readers? Maybe not. Given the time that reading consumes, it may be a skill that we can and should improve.
17. It means getting faster and more efficient at reading, while still understanding what you’re reading. Although you spend a good part of your day reading, have you ever thought about how you read? How do your eyes make sense of the shapes of the letters, and then put those letters together to form sentences that you can understand?
Reading is quite a complex skill. It was previously believed that during reading, both eyes focus on particular letters. 18. Scientists now believe that the eyes lock onto different letters at the same time, usually two characters apart. Your brain then fuses (融合) these images together to form a word. This happens very swiftly, as we look through pages of the text!
Many people read at an average rate of 250 words per minute. 19. Imagine, then, if you could double your rate to 500 words per minute, you could read all of this content in half the time. You could then spend the saved time on other tasks, or take a few extra minutes to relax. 20. This leads to better “big picture” understanding, which can greatly benefit your work and career.
A.Recent research shows this isn’t the case.
B.Speed-reading has many benefits.
C.It’s also a skill that most of us take for granted by the time we reach age 12.
D.You need to practice to improve your reading speed.
E.Another important advantage of speed-reading is that it allows one to better comprehend the overall structure of an argument.
F.But what does becoming a better reader involve?
G.This means that an average page in a book or document takes 1-2 minutes to read.
