Actors Keira Knightley and Kristen Bell have both commented on their worries about using Disney princesses as role models for their children.
On a famous talk show, Knightley said her daughter (who was born in 2015) was “banned” from watching Cinderella, which Disney produced as a cartoon in 1950 and a live-action film in 2015. “Cinderella waits around for a rich guy to rescue her. Don’t. Rescue yourself! Obviously.”
Knightley added that she had also forbidden The Little Mermaid, the 1989 cartoon. “This is the one that I’m quite annoyed about because I really like the film. I mean, the songs are great, but do not give up your voice for a man. Well, that’s a little difficult to handle, but I’m keeping to it.”
Bell, the star of Frozen, expressed her disapproval of the Snow White fairy tale, which became a classic Disney cartoon in 1938. In an interview with parents, Bell said: “I look at my girls and ask, ‘Don’t you think it’s very unusual that Snow White didn’t ask the old witch why she needed to eat the apple? Or where she got that apple?’ I say, ‘I would never take food from a stranger, would you?’ And my kids respond, ‘No!’ And I think I’m doing something right.”
Bell, who played a Disney princess in Frozen, said she also used the story to illustrate issues about permission. She says that she asked her children: “Don’t you think that it’s very strange that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission? … Because you cannot kiss someone if they’re sleeping!”
Bell later responded to criticism on social media. To one user she wrote: “Everything is a message to our children, because they are sponges(海绵) that soak up everything and are learning how to be adults through what they see. I want my girls to see and practice critical thinking and respectful behavior.”
24. Why did Knightley stop her daughter from watching The Little Mermaid?
A. Because Knightley disliked it.
B. Because the little mermaid was tricky.
C. Because the film showed wrong values.
D. Because the songs in the film were annoying.
25. What can we infer about Bell from Paragraph 4?
A. Bell thought Snow White behaved well.
B. Bell didn’t know how to persuade her kids.
C. Bell wanted her kids to learn from Snow White.
D. Bell believed her kids should be critical about the film.
26. What qualities do Knightley and Bell expect their children to have?
A. Curious and hard-working. B. Smart and generous.
C. Independent and good-mannered. D. Critical and proud.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Say No to Disney Princesses
B. Rescue Yourselves
C. Doing Something Right
D. Practice Critical Thinking

The Israeli farmers who pioneered the revolutionary technology known as drip irrigation(滴流灌溉)weren’t trying to solve one of the world’s most urgent problems. They were just trying to survive. They lived in the desert, and they didn’t have enough water to grow their crops.
In its simplest form, it was little more than a pipe with holes in it. But behind each hole was a hi-tech dripper that let out just the right amount of water. Snaked along a row of crops so that the holes were positioned directly above the roots, the pipe could direct each precious drop of water directly to the plants, getting a bigger harvest while using a very small amount of water.
Over time, the farmers improved upon the technology, perfecting the drippers that regulated the flow of water, and connecting the pipelines to computers that could determine exactly how much water each plant needed and when.
If the global population kept growing, the rest of the world would increasingly resemble their little community in the desert. So they began selling their irrigation systems in other parts of the world, eventually expanding to more than 110 countries. Netafirm, the company says it’s lifting people out of poverty and conserving water at a time when the importance of doing so has never been clearer.
The mass adoption of drip irrigation won’t save the world by itself. To avoid the coming catastrophe, nearly everybody will, in some way, have to do more with less, perhaps through accepting and using other new technologies. Otherwise, it’s going to get ugly.
28. Why is drip irrigation called “the revolutionary technology”?
A. It saves the world all by itself.
B. It is controlled by computers.
C. It makes irrigation more effective.
D. It provides deserts with water.
29. What does “one of the world’s most urgent problems” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Lacking water. B. Lacking labor.
C. Lacking food. D. Lacking energy.
30. How does the drip irrigation help farmers with crops?
A. By drilling holes on the pipes.
B. By regulating water via drippers.
C. By snaking pipes along the crops.
D. By placing pipes just above roots.
31. Which of the following will be the best slogan for Netafirm to sell the irrigation systems?
A. Less water; More harvest. B. New technology; New world.
C. More grain; Less starvation. D. Water saving; World surviving.
D
Name﹣calling, teasing, pushing and fighting﹣whether you have experienced it or not, the chances are that these are the things that appear in your mind when you hear the word “bullying”. Yet, many of us know little about the serious, lasting harms bullying could cause.
If you’ve watched 13 Reasons Why, you’ll understand the impacts that bullying can have. The second season of the popular US teenage drama was released on May 18. It tells the story of Hannah Baker, a high school student who takes her own life after she’s picked on by fellow students, while others stand by and do nothing to help her.
One of the important messages audiences could get from the show is to treat people with kindness and respect. “It teaches us that every single thing we say and do has an impact on others,” news platform Odyssey noted.
Some may think 13 Reasons Why exaggerates (夸大) the seriousness of school bullying, but according to the US National Center for Educational Statistics, more than 20 percent of US students were bullied in 2016, and only 36% of this group reported it.
NBA player Gerald Green opened up about being called “alien hands” during his teenage years due to his big hands. “Being bullied was embarrassing,” he said. “I still remember shying away from crowds and walking around with my hands in my pockets to evade the attention from my peers.” To get away with the teasing, he found his motivation by playing basketball and making a career out of it. But not everyone is so lucky to discover a release.
According to statistics released by the US government, if someone prevents a bully, there’s a 57% chance that the bullying will stop within 10 seconds. So if you ever witness bullying, consider stepping up and supporting the victim. As US actor Brandon Flynn, who stars in 13 Reasons Why, said, “Just because you’re not the one getting bullied, it doesn’t mean it’s not your problem.”
32. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To add some background information.
B. To encourage eyewitnesses to take action.
C. To introduce a new topic of the discussion.
D. To give people advice about dealing with bullying.
33. What does the US National Center for Educational Statistics indicate?
A. Bullying isn’t a problem in many schools.
B. School bullying can’t cause too much pain.
C. Only a few people are concerned about bullying.
D. Many people who’re bullied choose not to seek help.
34. What does the underlined word “evade” in Para. 5 mean?
A. Attract. B. Focus. C. Avoid. D. Keep.
35. What does the text tell us about 13 Reasons Why?
A. It overstates school bullying. B. It was first shown on May 18.
C. It is mainly about school bullying. D. It shows few people can report bullying.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Long ago, people believed that in the future we would work less, have more free time and get more relaxed. 36
Today we work harder, work longer hours and have more stresses than ten years ago. We walk faster, talk faster and sleep less than previous generations. And although we use machines that save us time, we have less free time than our parents and grandparents. 37 An American journalist James Gleick in a new book, says that people are suffering from “hurry sickness” — we’re trying to do more things in less time. As a result, our lives are stressful. He says that if we don’t slow down, we won’t live as long as our parents. 38
Newspaper articles today are shorter and the headlines are bigger. Most people don’t have enough time to read the articles, so they only read the headlines. On TV and the radio, newspapers speak more quickly than ten years ago. In the USA, there is a book called One-Minute Bedtime Stories for children. These are shorter versions of traditional stories, specially written for “busy parents” who want to save time! Some answer phones now have “quick playback” buttons so that we can replay people’s messages faster — we can’t waste time listening to people speaking at the normal speed! 39 Ten years ago when people went to art galleries they spent seconds looking at each picture. Today they spend just three three seconds! Nowadays, many people prefer faster and dynamic sports like basketball.
40 Our cars are faster but the traffic is worse, so we drive more slowly. We spend more time sitting in our cars, feeling stressed. Experts predict that in ten years the average speed on the road in cities will be only 17 km/h.
A. People didn’t feel stressed ten years ago.
B. But unluckily, this has not happened yet.
C. Even when we relax we do everything more quickly.
D. But what is this doing to our health?
E. For most people, being faster doesn’t mean being better.
F. The only thing that is slower than before is the way we drive.
G. Now everything is faster than before, which bring us more convenience.

第三部分 语言运用

Stephanie Jenouvrier at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution found the future of emperor penguins(帝企鹅)depended on international efforts to manage climate change rather than on their 56 (able) to adapt to new environment. Climate change, if 57 (leave) unchecked, could drive emperor penguins to extinction(灭绝)by the end of the century as sea ice disappears.
Disappearing sea ice affects these penguins 58 (direct) because they rely on it for their living. Sea ice changes are already affecting emperor penguins, with breeding failures for three years in a row at their second 59 (big) living place in the Antarctic.
60 (examine) the future of emperor penguins, Jenouvirer and her team 61 (model) their population under three scenarios(设想): global temperature increases by 1.5°C; global temperature increases by 2°C; no action 62 (take) to reduce emissions(排放物). They wanted to see 63 would happen if emissions kept rising. They found that global warming of 1.5°C would cause a 31 percent fall, 64 2°C a 44 percent fall. “The result was 65 81 to 86 per cent fall in population by 2100 under the third scenario,” said Jenouvrier.

In our kitchen, there was a wooden table and three chairs — one for Pa, one for Ma, and one for me. I tried not to look at Pa’s empty place. Pa had gone to the city to look for work. He had been gone for a long time.
Every night, lying awake in bed, I waited for the train to stop, waited for the sound of his work boots dropping on the step, and waited for his voice calling, “I’m home!”
Every night, as I lay there, I stared at the window and the curtains Ma made from empty flour sacks (面粉袋). Sometimes the train stopped — for someone else’s Pa coming home. Not mine, not yet.
Every night, Ma came to kiss me good-night — after the train had gone by. She had been listening, too. “Go to sleep. Your Pa’ll be home soon. Maybe for Thanksgiving.”
How could I be thankful without my Pa?
I went to sleep with the sound of train wheels in my head, whispering, “Maybe tomorrow, maybe tomorrow.”
One morning, the smell of coffee woke me. I ran into the kitchen. There he was! Pa lifted me onto his shoulders. “How’s my boy? You’ve gotten so big that I can barely lift you up anymore.”
He put me down, and I stared at the two sacks on the table. One said FLOUR. I tried reading the other: S-U-G-A-R. Pa whistled admiringly and winked (眨眼) at me. Ma didn’t say no when Pa sprinkled (撒) a bit of that precious white sugar on my bread.
Ma said, “I’m going to bake a pie for your Pa’s homecoming dinner. Go downstairs, Jimmy, and bring me that jar of apples.” She smiled at me with a “mind now” look.
There was no need. I knew how to be careful. It was the last jar — the one we had been saving and saving to welcome Pa home. “When Pa comes home, there’ll be apple pie.” I could hardly remember what pies tasted like.

六 续写范文
Paragraph 1:
I took the steps two at a time. I stood on tiptoes to take down the jar. With both my hands around it, I hurried upstairs, thinking fondly of the delicious taste. Suddenly, my bare feet caught on the middle one. Losing balance, I reached out my hands to steady myself, but in vain. The jar slipping through my fingers, it smashed on the hard-as-rock mud floor. Bits of apple flew everywhere. A river of glass glittered up at me.
Paragraph 2:
Seeing this, I felt like crying. “The last jar!” I should have been more careful. Hearing the sound, Ma and Pa raced down the stairs. “Are you hurt?” Ma asked anxiously. I raised my teary eyes and apologized in a choked voice. “Never mind. Son, accidents happen.” Pa winked at me, “What about a sugar pie?” Back to the kitchen, we baked the sugar pie together for Thanksgiving dinner, with a sweet atmosphere floating around us. More students in this program study full-time which consists of twenty hours a week. On the first day of the program, you’ll take a test to determine your level. At the end of each seven-week session, your language skills are evaluated. And if you’ve made enough progress, you’re promoted to the next level. In addition, you can enter the language center bonus project, which will allow you to have extra English hours with a native speaker. For more practice chances, there are also several social activities and field trips organized by the Students Center.
