    SHARK CONSERVATION IN SOUTH AFRICA
Take a two-week trip that you will never forget as a volunteer with sharks on a beautiful stretch of South Africa’s coastline. Head out to sea to witness one of the world’s most powerful (and most misunderstood) creatures on this inspiring project, enjoying watching them from both above and below water.
    The DAY-BY-DAY schedule
Day 1: Arrive in Cape Town on a Sunday. You will be collected from the airport and spend your first night in a guest house in the city centre.
Day 2: You will be collected bright and early from the guest house and taken down to the project. The drive takes about 90 minutes. You will receive a welcome and head out to sea to witness your first sharks!
Day 3: Most days you will be out on the boat with the sharks, depending on weather. Help out with the full range of tasks on the boats, and in conservation initiatives on land too.
Last day: On the final day of your project you will be taken back to Cape Town for your onward travel.
The price is £ 829, including the voluntary work programme with accommodations, airport transfers, one night in a guest house in Cape Town, breakfasts daily and lunches when on the boats. Your trip can be extended at a cost of £ 375 per week.
It is an amazing experience! Some volunteers planned to stay for 4 weeks, extended to 6 weeks and still didn’t want to come home. If you’d like to chat about this holiday or need help, we’re very happy to help.

The family of a 6yearold adopted Chinese girl who badly needs a bone marrow transplant (骨髓移植) believes they have found a match in China.
Kailee Wells suffers from a serious aplastic anemia (再生障碍性贫血), which prevents bone marrow from producing new blood cells. She has taken courses of treatment but has shown little sign of recovery.
The best help for such patients is a transplant of healthy marrow or blood cells from a suitable donor. Certain tissue of the patient and the donor must match.
Kailee's mother, Linda Wells, made her second trip to China earlier this month to find a donor. Her husband, Owen Wells, said that his wife believed doctors there had found a match.
“For these last 22 months, we've been living in fear that Kailee would take a turn for the worse and there would be nothing we could do about it,” he said.“Now we have something we can use and save our little girl. We are just about ready to start jumping up and down and rejoicing.”
Wells said a Chinese girl who is about a year old has a blood sample that matches Kailee's perfectly. The next step, he said, would be to make sure the sample is safely harvested and protected for transplant, the details of which have yet to be worked out.
Linda Wells first traveled to China in February to try to locate the girl's birth mother, who is likely to be a match. But she found no relatives and decided to try again this month.
“This gives us so much encouragement because now we found what we thought we would never be able to find for Kailee,” Owen Wells said. “We're going to continue our blood donor drive to try to continue to help as many people as we possibly can. We're just so happy.”

24.What do we know about Kailee Wells?
A.She was adopted by a Chinese family.
B.She has a oneyearold sister in China.
C.She was recovering from aplastic anemia.
D.She is unable to produce new blood cells.
25.Which word can replace the underlined word “rejoicing” in Paragraph 5 ?
    A.Waving. B.Moving. C.Cheering. D.Crying.
26.What can we infer from the text?
A.Linda Wells has found the girl's birth mother.
B.Owen and Linda tried every means to cure Kailee.
C.Doctors have worked out plans to protect the sample.
D.Owen and Linda visited China twice to find a perfect match.
27.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Long and deep friendship between two families.
    B.Faith leads to hope。
    C.Match found for a bone marrow transplant。
    D.The journey to China

Life has gone mostly online for many people around the world. With more people going online during the COVID-19 pandemic, global Internet traffic has become a big problem. Between January and late March, many major cities experienced an increase in Internet traffic.
Video meetings, online classrooms and stay-at-home entertainment have become a daily routine. This increase in traffic is testing the Internet' s strength. In March, major phone networks in the UK experienced mass outages(断供). People were not able to take calls, receive texts or use mobile data.
In the US, major telecommunications companies like AT&T said traffic was up 21 percent month over month. Video streaming services like You Tube, Netflix and Facebook have cut their picture qualities and download speeds. This is being done to reduce network traffic jams.
China has seen an Internet traffic increase of around 50 percent compared to the end of 2019. The country's network speeds went down sharply in early February. However, they returned to normal soon afterwards and have been working well. This is due to China’s work in building network infrastructure(基础设施), especially 5G technology. By the end of February, 164,000 5G base stations had been built nationwide. This has given Chinese networks the power to handle increased traffic.
“If there were no such development in the Internet network field. people could hardly enjoy such a colorful life at home. Online working and teaching could never be realized so smoothly," said Wen Kun, an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

    28. What happened to the Internet due to COVID-19?
    A. Internet traffic was jammed. B. Internet access was cut off.
    C. Internet service was ignored. D. Internet community was ruined.
    29. Why did some US companies cut download speeds?
    A. To increase Internet strength. B. To improve picture qualities.
    C. To avoid Internet breakdown. D. To reduce the number of users.
    30. Compared with other countries, China's Internet system_________.
    A. suffered bigger losses B. recovered faster
    C. cost less money D. started earlier
    31. What is Wen Kun's attitude towards China's Internet network?
    A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Critical. D. Positive.

    D
Did you ever have to say “no” to somebody? Such as a classmate who asks to go to lunch with you? New research suggests that, at least socially, a rejection (拒绝) should not include an apology. In other words, saying you are sorry does not make the person being rejected feel any better. In fact, it might make the rejected person feel worse. That is surprising. Many people consider it to be good manners to say they are sorry when they turn down a request.
Gili Freedman is doing some related research at Dartmouth College. For her research, she asked over 1,000 people to respond to different examples of social rejection. In one example, the researchers asked people for their reaction (反应) after a person named Taylor asked to join a co-worker who went out to lunch every Friday. And Taylor was told “no”. But in some cases, the person rejecting Taylor offered an apology. In other cases, the people doing the rejection did not say they were sorry. People were asked how they would feel if they were being turned down, just as Taylor was. Most said they would be more hurt by a rejection with an apology than a rejection without an apology.
Freedman said the reason is that apologies make people feel like they need to say that the rejection was okay - even when they felt like it was not okay. Rejection without an apology lets them express their feelings of disappointment, hurt or anger more easily. Freedman also said that an apology often makes the person doing the rejection feel better - even as it makes the person being rejected feel worse.
Her research deals only with social communication. A business situation might be very different. “If a manager rejects a job interviewee or a boss must tell an employee that he or she is being fired from a job,” Freedman said, “reactions to apologies may be different.”

    32. Why do people say they are sorry when they express rejection?
    A. Because they think it helps them express their dislike better.
    B. Because they think it is more polite.
    C. Because they think apologies are the basis of communication.
    D. Because they think it sounds more comfortable for the listener.
    33. In Gili Freedman’s research, over 1,000 people __________.
    A. rejected others without an apology
    B. offered an apology when rejecting others
    C. were asked to answer the question in different situations
    D. would be more hurt by a rejection with an apology
    34. What role does an apology play in rejection?
    A. It makes the rejection more acceptable.
    B. It makes a good impression on the listener.
    e.
    D. A rejection with an apology in a business situation.
    C. It makes the person doing the rejecting feel better.
    D. It makes the communication more pleasant.
    35. What will be mentioned next according to the last paragraph?
    A. The effect of an apology during a rejection.
    B. Gili Freedman’s research on business situations.
    C. The difference between a social situation and a business on
Some of the world's most important scientists think the idea of people living on Mars will come true one day. Stephen Hawking believed humans must move into space to survive. “Once we spread out into space and establish independent colonies, our future should be safe, "he said. ___36 __________ He thinks sending people to Mars will allow us to learn a lot - for example, about the ability of humans to live in a very different environment
__37 __________ Terraforming means changing the environment on a planet so that it is similar to Earths. One of the main goals of terraforming Mars is to warm it up because the average temperature there is about -60°C. One idea for warming Mars is to build factories there that produce greenhouse gases. This could take many centuries. However, it should lead to rainfall and the growth of plants, resulting in more air that people can breathe.
__38 ___________ As a test, six people lived in a Mars-like environment in Hawaii for a year before "returning to Earth" recently. It was a 1, 200-square-foot room that was on the side of a volcano and used the sun for energy. Christiane Heinicke, one of the people who lived there, said that one of the biggest issues was feeling bored. __39 _________ Another important finding was that the people living together should all be able to get along and work together
__40 _________ The organisation believes that its project is giving people worldwide the chance to be part of the first human crew ever to live on Mars for good. However, many experts think the project’s cost of US$6 billion is too low for it to be successful. The American space agency NASA believes that sending people to Mars would cost about US$100 billion although this estimate is based on bringing them back to Earth, too. Regardless, it seems that humans living on Mars may well happen a lot sooner than most people believe.

    A. However, scientists will need to terraform Mars for people to be able to live.
    B. One particular organisation based in Europe is planning to send the first humans to Mars before 2030.
    C. Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and the smallest planet in the solar system.
    D. So humans on Mars would always need to keep themselves busy with various activities.
    E. Robert Zubrin, a rocket scientist, agrees and thinks starting with Mars makes the most sense.
    F. Another big concern for scientists is whether humans can move to Mars and still stay healthy in mind and body.
    G. Although exploring the Mars has never been easy, scientists are determined to continue their explorations.

I was born and grew up in a small seaside town. In my childhood, I often played on the beach with my elder sister, chasing(追逐)the waves and enjoying the seaside scenery.
One sunny summer afternoon, my sister and I were playing on a big rock quite a distance from the beach. We were so happy that we didn't notice the water rising. When we decided to go back, we were shocked to find that the rock had almost been covered by water and there was no way back to the shore. Meanwhile, the wind blew harder and harder. We got into a panic, waving and shouting crazily towards the shore. Suddenly, I slipped(滑)and fell into the sea. My sister stretched out her hand to catch hold of me. However, she could not stay still, and slid off the rock into the sea, too.
"Help! Help!" We cried. I could feel my body tingling(酸麻)as I tried to breathe for air. I attempted to swim back to the rock, but the water was too deep and the waves were too strong. What made things worse was that the rough water made it almost impossible for anyone to hear our cries. Tears mixed with the water as I struggled in the sea. My sister, although using all her strength, wasn't able to pull me in. Instead, she was being pushed apart from me by the big waves. The two of us, scared to death, kept crying.

    1—5 BABCA 6—10 CACAB 11—15 CCABA 16—20 BCACB
    A篇 21-23 DAD
根据Day 1部分中的“Arrive in Cape Town on a Sunday”和Day2部分“You will be collected bright and early from the guest houseand taken down to the project... head out to sea to witness your first sharks”可知,真正的鲨鱼观赏之旅是在周一。
根据Day 3+部分中的“Most days you will be out on theboat with the sharks”可知,如果天气条件允许的话,第三天可以在海上航行。故选A。
根据文中的“Take a two-week trip”“The price is£829”“Your trip can be extended at a cost of £ 375 per week”可知,两周的旅行费用是829英镑,之后每延长一周,费用增加375英镑。
由第二段中的which prevents bone marrow from producing new blood cells可知Kailee Wells患有严重的再生障碍性贫血症,她的骨髓不能产生新的血细胞。
由文中提到的Linda两次来中国及Owen的话 “We're going to continue our blood donor drive to try to continue to help as many people as we possibly can.”
A 29. C 30. B 31. D
根据原文第一段“With more people going online during the COVID-19 pandemic, global Internet traffic has become a big problem.”
根据原文第三段“Video streaming services like You Tube, Netflix and Facebook have cut their picture qualities and download speeds. This is being done to reduce network traffic jams.”
根据原文第四段“However, they returned to normal soon afterwards and have been working well.”
本题是对于观点态度的判断,根据原文最后一段其所说的话“If there were no such development in the Internet network field. people could hardly enjoy such a colorful life at home. Online working and teaching could never be realized so smoothly”可知,“如果在互联网领域没有这样的发展,人们很难在家就享受到这么多彩的生活,在线的工作和教学从未像现在这样如此流畅地实现。”
Many people consider it to be good manners to say they are sorry when they turn down a request.(很多人认为在拒绝某个请求时表示抱歉是有礼貌。)
For her research, she asked over1,000 people to respond to different examples of social rejection.(在她的研究中,她了1000多人,来回应不同的社会排斥的例子。) In some cases the person rejecting Taylor offered an apology.(在一些情况下,拒绝泰勒的人说对不起)可知B项是错误;第一段第六句: In other cases, the people doing the rejection did not say they were sorry.(在其他情况下,拒绝的人并没有说对不起。) 第一段最后 wit: People were asked how they would feel if they were being turned down, just as Taylor was Most said they would be more hurt by a rejection with an apology than a rejection without an apology.(人们被问到,如果他们像泰勒样被拒绝,他们会有什么感觉?
Freedman also said that an apology often makes the person doing the rejection feel better-even as it makes the person being rejected feel worse.(弗雷曼还表示,道通常让拒绝者感觉更好过,即使这会让被拒绝者感觉更槽。)
Her research deals only with social communication. A business situation might be very different. "If a manager rejects a job interviewee or a boss must tell an employee that he or she is being fired from a job, "Freedman said. reactions to apologies may be different."(她的研究只涉及社交互动。商务场合可能会有很大不同。弗雷曼表示,如果一位经理拒绝一位求职者,或是一位老板必须要开除名员工,对道歉的反应可能会有所不同。)可以推断出,在接下来的表达中将会涉及商务场合。故:选择D项

Knowing that you have a strong desire to explore space, I’m delighted to invite you to attend a lecture about space exploration with me.

Not only does the lecture deal with the current space exploration and the future challenges, but it also includes Yang Liwei's experience when he successfully orbited the earth 14 times. He will bring a large number of super first hand photos to us, which I am sure are a feast for our eyes.
Will you be available during that time? I'm sincerely looking forward to your participation and early reply.
    Yours sincerely
    Li Hua
    读后续写;
Luckily two boys playing on the beach happened to see us. They quickly found a stick nearby and approached us cautiously hand in hand. They tried to pull us ashore with the stick. But the stick was too short for us to reach. Worse still, the wind was getting so strong that the two boys were rocked from side to side, unable to stand steadily. Eventually they had no choice but to go back to the shore to look for other people to help us.
Fortunately, the two boys managed to find a lifeguard. Having learned what was happening, the lifeguard rushed fearlessly against the strong wind and huge waves. Such an experienced swimmer was he that he reached us in no time. He grabbed my arm and quickly carried me to the shore where he left me taken care of by the two boys. Then without delay he returned to save my sister. We were so blessed to be alive and heartily thankful to that courageous lifeguard and the two boys who had saved our lives!
