Bad news travels fast when you watch the evening news or read the morning papers, it seems that things that get the most coverage (范围) are all sad events or situations like wars, earthquakes, floods, fires and murders.
“This is the classic rule for mass media (大众传媒). They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling,” Jonah Berger, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, US, told The New York Times.
But with social media getting more and more popular, information is now being spread in different ways, and researchers are discovering new rules — good news can actually spread faster and farther than bad accidents and other sad stories.
Berger and his colleague, Katherine Milkman, looked at thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website and analyzed (分析) the most emailed list for six months.
One of his findings was that articles in the science part were much more likely to make the list. Those science stories woke up feelings of awe (敬畏) and made the readers want to share this positive(积极的) feeling with others.
Besides science stories, readers were also found to be likely to share articles that were exciting or funny. “The more positive an article was, the more likely it was to be shared,” Berger wrote in his new book. “For example, stories about newcomers falling in love with New York City,” he writes, “seemed to be shared more than the death of a popular zookeeper.”
But does all this good news actually make the readers feel better? Not necessarily.
According to a study by researchers at Harvard University, people are more likely to say more positive things about themselves when they’re talking to a bigger audience, rather than just one person, which helps explain all the perfect vacations that keep showing up on microblogs. This, researchers found, makes people think that life is unfair and that they’re less happy than their friends.
But no worries. There’s a quick and easy way to take the despair from you that you get from viewing other people’s seemingly perfect lives — turn on the television and watch the news. There is always someone doing worse than you are.
( ) 44. In Berger’s opinion, bad news covers most papers because .

C. The story of a creative scientist. D. The flood hitting a small town.

B. good news sometimes has negative (消极的) influence

( ) 47. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Good News Spreads Fast B. The Power of Good News

Susan Boyle was born as the ninth child in a Catholic family. She suffered from learning disabilities ever since her birth because of her mother’s poor health.
School was difficult for Susan and she was bullied (欺负) because of her different behaviour. Her siblings, who were much older, had life experiences that were unknown to their little sister. From the time of her birth, Susan was a screamer. The only really safe place that she would use as a repeat was her bedroom. There she would hang posters of her musical heroes on the walls and sing popular music into a hairbrush that she thought to be a microphone.
One by one her brothers and sisters moved away from home and then Susan’s father died. This left her alone with an old mother and a cat. She tried volunteer work. Her best state of mind, however, was found when she was singing and so she would regularly join others in karaoke or pubs where she could show her skills and receive appreciation from the crowd.
When Susan announced at Christmas that she was planning to take part in the Britain’s Got Talent competition, her brothers and sisters tried to discourage her. It was a wonder that she was even able to do the audition (试唱) considering the trouble she faced just physically getting to the right place.
The Woman I Was Born to Be is a beautiful story written in the simple but humorous voice of the writer, Susan Boyle. She tells her story from birth to the present in an interesting and educational manner.
I love this book! In fact, I read the whole thing in one day! There is something in the stories that not only teaches the readers but also encourages us to reach for our dreams — no matter how impossible they may seem to be!

A. Susan’s parents. B. Susan’s friends.
C. Susan’s classmates. D. Susan’s brothers and sisters.

A. She liked being alone. B. She was good at singing.

A. is based on Susan’s life stories B. is written to please readers
C. is very sad to read D. is difficult to understand
( ) 51. What does the author probably think of Susan’s life stories ?
A. Encouraging. B. Humorous. C. Worried. D. Boring.

How to say hello in Japanese depends on (取决于) when you say it. This is very much like different greetings used in English at different times of the day or night. In Japanese culture, it also depends on whether (是否) you are on the phone or meeting somebody or whether you are close to the person you are greeting. We seldom greet them with “Good morning” or “Good evening”. A “Hi” is enough.
The most popular and most well-known translation for “Hello” is still “Konnichiwa”, but it is not exactly how to say hello in Japanese. Perhaps it is not the most suitable work for it. Actually (实际上), the correct greeting in English for “Konnichiwa” is “Good day” or “Good noon”, and I am sure you wouldn’t like greeting people with a “Good day” at any time, and neither (也不) do Japanese like saying “Konnichiwa” when they want to say “Hello”.
So what to do? Let’s do it the way the Japanese do. Use “Ohaiyo Gonzaimasu ” for “Good morning”, “Konnichiwa” when it’s noon and “Konbanwa” to greet somebody in the afternoon. Things are different when you are on the phone. Just say “Moshi, Moshi”, which is actually like saying “Hello” over the phone, because one seldom uses “Good morning” or “Good afternoon or “Good evening” right after picking up the phone. It is invariably the sweet old “Hello”.
Next time, I’ll tell something about my life in Japan.
( ) 52. How do Japanese people greet each other in the afternoon?
A. By saying “Konbanwa”. B. By saying “Moshi, Moshi”.
C. By saying “Konnichiwa”. D. By saying “Ohaiyo Gonzaimasu”.
( ) 53. Which of the following is TRUE according to the writer?
A. Japanese culture is just like American culture.
B. Japanese people are very friendly to each other.
C. People don’t need to be polite to their close friends.
D. Japanese people don’t like using “Konnichiwa” as a greeting for the whole day.
( ) 54. The underlined word “invariably” may mean ______.
A. never B. probably C. always D. sometimes
( ) 55. From the passage we know that the writer ______.
A. is from Britain B. lived in Japan for some time
C. is working in a radio station now D. knows both Japanese and Chinese
( ) 56. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. How to say hello B. How to greet close friends in Japanese
C. How to greet people in Japanese D. Some differences between English and Japanese
