Friends, have you ever had the strange feeling that you were being watched? You turned around and, sure enough, someone was looking right at you!
Some psychologists(心理学家) say that humans have a natural ability to sense when someone is looking at them, which is the socalled “sixth sense” among us.To study whether such a “sixth sense” really exists,Robert Baker,a famous psychologist at the University of Kentucky, performed several experiments.
In the first one,Baker sat behind unsuspecting people in public places and stared at the backs of their heads for 5 to 15 minutes. The subjects were eating, drinking, reading, studying, watching TV,or working at a computer and so on.Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was sitting behind them during those periods.Later, when he questioned the suspects, almost all of them said they had no idea that someone was staring at them behind.
For the second experiment,Baker told subjects that they would be stared at from time to time from behind a twoway mirror in a lab setting. The people had to write down when they felt they were being stared at and when they weren't.After half an hour,Baker found that the subjects were no better at telling when they were stared at than if they had just guessed.
Baker's experiment concludes again that people do not have the ability to sense when they are being stared at.If you doubt the outcome of his two experiments,I suggest you repeat the experiments and see for yourselves.

A.the subjects were not directly stared at from time to time
B.the subjects had to write something down in a lab sitting
C.the subjects were good at guessing when they were stared at
D.the subjects were informed of the purpose of the experiment
6.What's the author's attitude towards the result of the experiment?
A.Support. B.Doubt.
C.Sympathy. D.Surprise.
7.We can infer from the passage that________.
A.it's most probable that humans have six senses

(2018·湖北省部分重点高中高三联考)Millions could be saved by the recently developed “universal vaccine(疫苗)”,scientists claim. According to Science Daily, there were two universal vaccines developed by an international team of scientists: a USAspecifie vaccine with coverage of 95 percent of known U.S. influenza (流感) strains and universal vaccine with coverage of 88 percent of known flu strains globally.
“Every year we have a round of flu vaccination, where we choose a recent strain of flu as the vaccine, hoping that it will protect against next year's strains. We know this method is safe, and that it works reasonably well most of the time,” Dr Derek Gatherer of Lancaster University said in a statement.
“However, sometimes it doesn't work—as in the H3N2 vaccine failure in winter 2014—2015—and even when it does it is extremely expensive and labour intensive. Also, these annual vaccines give us no protection at all against potential future flu. ”
State News Flu explains vaccines work by exposing the immune system “to proteins on the exterior of influenza viruses that have been caused to be harmless”. The vaccines prepare the immune system to be ready once it has come across the particular virus included in the vaccine by developing antibodies(抗体) to fight them off.
Recalling the 1918 Influenza, also called as the Mother of All Pandemics(大流行),the scientists note that it is important to develop vaccines to avoid massive deaths.
The 1918 Influenza, as stated by Stanford killed somewhere between 20 and 40 million people, more than the number of deaths during the World War I.
Dr Gatherer said: “It doesn't have to be this way. Based on our knowledge of the flu virus and the human immune system, we can use computers to design the elements of a vaccine that gives much broader and longerlasting protection.”
Meanwhile, the scientists are still looking for partners for a laboratory proofofprinciple test.
8.Where is the result of the research from?
A.Science Daily. B.China Daily.
C.Stanford. D.Dr Lancaster.
9.What does the underlined word “strains” probably mean?
A.Vaccines. B.Viruses.
C.Kinds. D.Systems.
10.What can we know about the yearly vaccines?
A.They always work reasonably well to protect against next year's strains.
B.They don't have effect on protecting against next year's strains.
C.They can protect against potential future flu.
D.They have no effect on protecting against underlying future flu.
11.Why did the author mention the 1918 Influenza in the passage?
A.To show the importance of developing vaccines.
B.To remind people of the terrible event.
C.To explain the reasons for massive deaths.
D.To be in memory of the dead in the 1918 Influenza.

(2018·浙江省诸暨市高三适应性测试)America's top education official says many schools are spending too much time teaching the “basics”—reading, math and writing. It might seem opposite to what educators have been advocating. But U.S.Education Secretary John King says children really deserve access to a wellrounded education that includes music and arts because it will help them go into being wellrounded, welleducated persons.
King spoke about his own education when explaining why schools need to teach more than math, reading and writing.
King grew up in New York. Both his parents died when he was quite young. In his house, things were often crazy and frightening. It was his teacher, Mr.Osterwei, who helped him escape his difficult life.Quite often, the teacher took him and his classmates to the theater, the zoo, the ballet and famous Museum of Natural History.“Those were powerful, lifechanging experiences,” King says.King graduated from Harvard University. He received his law degree from Yale University. He took charge of New York State public schools from 2011—2015.The U.S.Senate approved him as Education secretary last month.
Many schools spend almost all funding on the “basics” because they lack money for other subjects, King said.Or they want students to do better on tests used to compare students performance.
Students need to connect their studies and things that matter to them personally, such as music if they are to become “sophisticated(水平高的)thinkers”.A 2013 report by UNESCO said today's world needs people able to solve new and unusual problems. It said arts can help students find those answers. In the report, UNESCO said teaching the arts in China, South Korea and Japan is different.
From that in many Western countries, the emphasis(重点)in those three countries “is on joyful experiences and children's interests”. In the West, educators are more likely to connect the arts to reading, writing and math.A 2014 report tried to compare how well countries teach children how to solve problems. It found Singapore, South Korea, Japan, China, Canada, Australia and Finland with the highest scores for 15yearolds.Singapore led the way with a score of 562 out of a possible 1,000.The average score was 500.The United States had a score of 508.
12.According to Paragraph 1, what have educators been advocating?
A.Teaching arts should never be put second to teaching the “basics”.
B.More money and time ought to be set aside for teaching arts.
C.Research should be done to guarantee a wellrounded education.
D.Adequate time is supposed to be spent teaching the “basics”.
13.Why did King speak about his own education experience?
A.To share with us his extraordinary education background.
B.To tell us his teacher attached great importance to teaching.
C.To confirm access to arts contributes to good academic performances.
D.To appeal to schools to give more arts lessons than the “basics” ones.
14.The author convinces us of the significance of teaching arts by different means except ________.
A.by giving examples
B.by making comparisons
C.by analyzing figures
D.by performing experiments
15.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Schools are supposed to be farsighted
B.Kids need more than “the basics” to learn
C.Kids should be wellrounded persons
D.Teachers must have advanced teaching methods

Money Matters
Parents should help their children understand money. 1 So you may start talking about money when your child shows an interest in buying things, candy or toys, for example.
The basic function of money
Begin explaining the basic function of money by showing how people trade money for goods or services. It is important to show your child how money is traded for the things he wants to have. If he wants to have a toy, give him the money and let him hand the money to the cashier. 2 When your child grows a bit older and understands the basic function of money, you can start explaining more complex ways of using money.
Money lessons
Approach money lessons with openness and honestly. 3 If you must say no to a child's request to spend money, explain, “You have enough toy trucks for now.” Or, if the request is for many different things, say, “You have to make a choice between this toy and that toy.”
4
Begin at the grocery store. Pick out two similar brands of a product—a namebrand butter and a generic(无商标产品),for example. You can show your child how to make choices between different brands of a product so that you can save money. 5 If he chooses the cheaper brand, allow him to make another purchase with the money saved. Later, you may explain how the more expensive choice leaves less money for other purchases.
A.Wise decisions.
B.The value of money.
C.Permit the child to choose between them.
D.Tell your child why he can—or cannot—have certain things.
E.Ask yourself what things that cost money are most important to you.
F.Talk about how the money bought the thing after you leave the toy store.
G.The best time to teach a child anything about money is when he shows an interest.

Chart 1 shows the daily average amount of time the students spend on different afterclass activities. The students put the most time—93 minutes—into their homework, and next in line is watching TV, which takes up 46 minutes. They put in about the same amount of time listening to music and working on the computer, 34 minutes and 30 minutes each. While 25 minutes is spent on sports, only 12 minutes goes into housework.
As is shown on Chart 2, only 10% of the time is taken up with sports activities. I think schools should encourage the students to do more exercise after class. This way, they may be healthier and more energetic.
