An elephant in a Suth Krean z is using his trunk t pick up nt nly fd, but als human vcabulary.
An internatinal team f scientists cnfirmed Friday what the Everland Z has been saying fr years: Their 5.5-tn elephant Kshik has an unusual talent.
The 22-year-ld Asian elephant can reprduce five Krean wrds by putting his trunk inside his muth t imitate sund. Scientists said he may have started imitating human speech because he was lnely.
One f the researchers said there is n cnclusive evidence that Kshik understands the sunds he makes, althugh the elephant des respnd t wrds like “anja (sit dwn)” and “nuw (lie dwn).”
Kshik is particularly gd with vwels (元音), with a rate f similarity f 67 percent, the researchers said. Fr cnsnants (辅音) he scres nly 21 percent.
Researchers said the clearest scientific evidence that Kshik is deliberately imitating human speech is that the sund frequency f his wrds matches that f his trainers.
Vcal imitatin f ther species has been fund in mckingbirds, parrts and mynahs. But the paper says Kshik’s case represents “a whlly new methd f vcal prductin” because he uses his trunk t reprduce human speech.
