Like all children, I was always getting myself and the kitchen table in a mess when I first tk an interest in painting. Unlike many kids, wh give up activities like art fr ther subjects when they g thrugh schl, I cntinued painting thrughut my childhd. Nw, after years f enjyment, I’ve finally decided t display sme f my wrks by hlding an shw at Glebe Street library.
I’ve never had any frmal art training. When I was trying t decide what I shuld study at university, art as a subject never entered my head. I always thught my parents wanted me t fllw a subject that wuld be useful when I was lking fr a jb, s I ended up taking a business curse.
And during my time at university, I seldm painted. It wuldn’t have been easy t paint anyway as I lived in schl and had very little space. I kept an interest in art thugh and visited lcal exhibitins (展览) whenever I culd, but that was abut it. It was later in my thirties while I was wrking that I discvered my lve f the activity again. Since then I’ve made a pint f spending at least ne evening a week painting.
Hwever, my wrks have nly ever been seen by trusted friends. They’ve always given me plenty f supprt and encuragement. But I’ve always wndered what strangers wuld think. Maybe they culd give me an hnest pinin f my ability. The library has ffered me a rm fr the shw. The desert f Abu Dhabi is an extremely dry place with very little water. The plants and animals in the desert must adapt t (适应) this tugh cnditin. It has been fund that many plants have special ways t stre water r withstand high temperatures.
Recently, researchers in Abu Dhabi’s desert fund a plant called the Athel tamarisk. This tree can thrive there and actually grw up t 18 meters tall. The tree seems t use salt crystals (结晶体) n its leaves t pull water frm the air.
After a researcher nticed water appearing n these crystals, her team recrded vides f the plants. Later, they fund ut why the tree can survive in such a dry and salty desert. The tree gets rid f extra salt by prducing salt crystals nt its leaves. Hwever, this als helps the plant pull misture (水分) frm the air. This is a useful skill in extremely dry envirnments. The findings were reprted in Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences.
The team examined salt crystals n the plant’s leaves. They fund mre than 10 different kinds f salt. Mst f the larger salt crystals simply fall frm the leaves. But they als fund small crystals f lithium sulfate (硫酸锂). These small crystals stay n the leaves and take in water frm the air. When the team added clred water t salty leaves, the water stuck t the crystals, and then went int the plant’s leaves. This prves that the crystals help the plant cllect water.
