Fr the past five years, Paula Smith, a histrian f science, has devted herself t re-creating lng-frgtten techniques. While ding research fr her new bk, she came acrss a 16th-century French manuscript (手稿) cnsisting f nearly 1,000 sets f instructins, cvering subjects frm tl making t finding the best sand.
The authr’s intentin remains as mysterius as his name; he may have been simply taking ntes fr his wn recrds. But Smith was struck mainly by the fact that she didn't truly grasp any f the skills the authr described. “Yu simply can't get an understanding f that handwrk by reading abut it,” she says.
Thugh Smith did get her hands n the best sand, ding things the ld-fashined way isn't just abut playing arund with French mud. Recnstructing the wrk f the craftsmen (工匠) wh lived centuries ag can reveal hw they viewed the wrld, what bjects filled their hmes, and what went n in the wrkshps that prduced them. It can even help slve present-day prblems: In 2015, scientists discvered that a 10th-century English medicine culd kill a drug-resistant virus.
The wrk has als brught insights fr museums, Smith says. One must knw hw an bject was made in rder t preserve it. What's mre, recnstructins might be the nly way t knw what treasures lked like befre time wre them dwn. Schlars have seen this idea in practice with ancient Greek and Rman statues. These sculptures were painted a rainbw f striking clurs. We can't appreciate these kinds f details withut seeing wrks f art as they riginally appeared—smething Smith believes yu can d nly when yu have a rad map.
Smith has put the manuscript’s ideas int practice. Her final gal is t link the wrlds f art and science back tgether: She believes that bringing the ld recipes fr life can help develp a kind f learning that highlights experimentatin, teamwrk, and prblem slving.
Back when science—then called “the new philsphy (哲学)”—tk shape, academics lked t craftsmen fr help in understanding the natural wrld. Micrscpes and telescpes were invented by way f artistic tinkering (修补), as craftsmen experimented with glass t better bend light.
If we can rediscver the values f hands-n experience and craftwrk, Smith says, we can marry the best f ur mdern insights with the handiness f ur ancestrs.
24. Hw did Smith feel after reading the French manuscript?

After a busy mrning, lunch can feel like just the pick-me-up yu need, but smetimes the meal that yu thught wuld energize yu is the very thing that makes yu want t nap at yur desk.
Feeling tired after lunch, r pst-meals in general, is knwn as pstprandial smnlence—als called the fd cma.
Part f this phenmenn is due t basic physilgy (生理学): When humans eat, mst f ur bld ges t the digestive rgans t prcess the fd, said Sandra Aréval, directr f cmmunity health and wellness at Mntefire Nyack Hspital in New Yrk state.
Feeling tired after a meal desn’t necessarily suggest an underlying (潜在的) issue. But there can be additinal factrs that wrsen this natural respnse, making getting thrugh the rest f the wrkday r any activities exhausting. Here’s what t watch ut fr and hw t make adjustments.
When it cmes t why yu feel verly tired after eating, a cmmn cause is cnsuming meals that are heavy in terms f quantity r quality. Nt eating breakfast can lead t verindulging later in the day if excessive (过度的) hunger makes cntrlling yur appetite difficult, Aréval said.
Smetimes, hwever, the makeup f certain fds can cntribute t tiredness. Fats are the hardest nutrient t digest because their mlecules are much larger than thse f prtein r carbs, said Julie Stefanski, a spkespersn fr the Academy f Nutritin and Dietetics. If yu had a meal high in fat—such as fried fds r pizza—that culd make yu feel tired. Meals high in added sugar r refined r highly prcessed carbhydrates can have the same effect.
The fiber in s-called whle fds, which refers t the natural r unprcessed fd, slws the intake f sugar int the bdy, meaning they dn’t cause bld sugar r insulin spikes (胰岛素飙升) and instead give yu mre stable, lasting energy, said Kristin Kirkpatrick, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic.
“A five-minute walk r smething helps t imprve circulatin and alertness (机敏), as well,” Aréval said.

A. Bld is bad fr the digestive rgans.
B. Bld has varieties f tasks t carry ut.
C. Eating habits have a great effect n health.
D. Eating t much can burden the digestive rgans.
29. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd “verindulging”?
A. ver-cnsumingB. verweightC. falling sleepyD. lacking energy
30. Which fd will Kristin Kerkpatrick suggest?
A. Dim sum.B. Fish and chips.C. Fried egg.D. Crn.
31. Why des the authr write the passage?
A. T present a new study.B. T clarify a cncept.
C. T prvide sme guidance.D. T shw a scial phenmenn.
D
In 2000, a famus evlutinary therist Stephen Jay Guld said, “There’s been n bilgical change in humans in 40,000 r 50,000 years. We’ve built everything we call culture and civilizatin with the same bdy and brain.” Nw, 22 years later, mst evlutinary bilgists beg t differ. Natural selectin is still perating n humans, they say—and they have evidence t back up the claim.
Sarah Tishkff, an evlutinary bilgist at the University f Pennsylvania, cites an example f natural selectin still ging n tday. Sme peple have a genetic variant (变异) that prtects them frm malaria, which infects and kills millins f peple every day. These peple will be mre likely t live and pass n that variant t their children.
Scientists have been able t discver many examples f nging natural selectin thanks t a technlgy: the ability t sequence (测定序列) the human genme quickly and inexpensively. But nt all the tls that uncver such evidence are s high tech. Church recrds that list births, marriages, and deaths ffer a unique windw int evlutin n a ppulatin.
Sctt Slmn, an evlutinary bilgist at Rice University, dug int this type f data and fund that natural selectin favrs an earlier start t reprductin—in ther wrds, mre time t have children. The mre children, the mre chances are fr evlutin.
There’s anther imprtant actr in this evlutinary play: culture. When peple mve frm ne ppulatin t anther, they take their genes with them, and that changes the genes in bth the ppulatins they leave and the nes they jin. “That is actually ne f the mst imprtant systems fr mdern human evlutin,” Sctt says. “In the last cuple f hundred years, and certainly in the last century, human ppulatins have been mixing like never befre.”
Why des the authr mentin genetic variant in paragraph 2?
A. T explain a bilgical phenmenn.
B. T prve an evlutinary thery.
C. T stress the seriusness f malaria.
D. T highlight effrts by scientists.
33. What may cntribute t the discvery f nging natural selectin?
A. Rapid genetic changes.
B. Increasing research budget.
C. Birth recrds frm the gvernment.
D. Advancement f technlgy.
34. What can we infer frm Sctt Slmn’s study?
A. Church recrds shw a trend f early reprductin.
B. Ppulatin mvement has reached the peak.
C. Mre children will benefit the whle sciety.
D. Culture influences evlutin greater than technlgy.
35. What is the main idea f this passage?
A. The study n bilgical change in human evlutin deserves cnducting.
B. Genetic variants and cultural shifts play crucial rles in human evlutin.
C. The mixing human ppulatins significantly decide evlutinary prcesses.
D. Mdern scientific tls revlutinize the study f human evlutin.
