In a Flrida neighbrhd, a kind-hearted man named William Dunn, nw 58, nticed a yung by frequently strming in and ut f his hme alne. Curius abut the child’s life, Dunn inquired and learned the by was missing a father figure. Remembering the peace and patience he learned frm his wn dad thrugh fishing, Dunn decided t share this jy with the by, gaining permissin frm his mther t take him n fishing trips.
What began as a casual Saturday uting evlved int a 16-year traditin. Dunn, a father f three, started taking grups f kids, many withut dads, n weekend fishing trips. Amng them were fster kids wh had knwn little stability. “They’d been thrugh a lt,” Dunn reflects, “but fishing made all that fade away.” The kids, wh affectinately call him ‘Big Will’, fund calm and fun n the water.
Initially, Dunn used a prtin f his tyre sales incme t rent bats fr the kids. In 2018, he frmalized his effrts by funding the nn-prfit Take a Kid Fishing Inc. Since then, he and his vlunteers have intrduced ver 2500 kids t the thrill f fishing. One such child was Jayden Pryr, wh struggled emtinally after his father’s tragic death in 2020. Jayden, nw 13, has matured thrugh fishing, even basting f a shark catch with Dunn’s help, expressing deep gratitude.
The fishing is nly part f the impact Dunn has; the relatinships he builds are equally significant. When Jayden’s grades suffered, a talk with Big Will turned things arund, giving Jayden a sense f purpse. Bella Smith, a 21-year-ld fster kid and autmtive student, values the self-respect and mental tughness Dunn emphasizes. “Fishing helps me fcus n the psitive,” she says.
After Dunn’s wn father passed away in December, the fishing trips tk n added significance. “I have even mre passin fr it nw,” he says, cherishing the mments when a child’s face lights up with their first catch. “I feel lucky t witness that every weekend,” Dunn says.
    4. What inspired William Dunn t start taking kids n fishing trips?

Is there anything mre bring than the endless drive t make every waking mment mre prductive? “If I can save ten secnds n a prcess that happens ten times per day, that’s a minute and 40 secnds saved per day,” a prductivity expert recently advised in Time magazine, t take just ne example. “Over the curse f a year, that’s ten hurs saved.”
If that sunds exhausting, the gd news is that there are many reasns t avid putting urselves under this kind f nn-stp pressure – nt least the latest neurscience n hw the brain regulates fcus, as we explre in “Take cntrl f yur brain’s master switch t ptimize (最优化) hw yu think”.
It has t d with a tiny bundle f blue-tinged neurns in the brainstem called the lcus ceruleus. Accrding t new research, this structure acts like a gear lever that sets the pace f ur brain’s prcessing. In Gear 1, the mind can wander freely; in Gear 2, we are highly engaged and attentive; and in Gear 3, we are hyperalert and quick t respnd t a crisis.
What varius experiments have nw shwn is that mderate lcus ceruleus activity – Gear 2— is the ptimum state fr many types f cgnitive activity. It increases ur cncentratin, while als allwing fr the kind f thinking necessary fr prblem-slving. Gear 3 may be useful when we are facing an emergency, but it reduces ur capacity t think analytically r creatively.
Crucially, it turns ut that the lcus ceruleus can easily be tipped int Gear 3 whenever we are under pressure. If we are cnstantly pushing urselves t achieve mre and mre in a limited amunt f time, we may find urselves stuck in this verwhelming and exhausting brain state, which will nly reduce the quality f ur utput in the lng term.
With that in mind, it may, in fact, be flish t insist n driving the engine f thught at ever greater speeds all the time. What is t ften verlked is the need t give yur brain plenty f pprtunity t return t a lwer gear. Fr high-quality thinking, cntrary t much f the prductivity advice, dwntime may be just as prductive as uptime.
    8. What is the main idea f the secnd paragraph?
    A. The authr is critical f the advice given by prductivity experts.
    B. The authr is indifferent t the advice given by prductivity experts.
    C. The authr agrees with the prductivity experts’ apprach t time management.
    D. The authr believes that everyne shuld fllw the advice f prductivity experts.
    9. What des the underlined phrase “lcus ceruleus” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. A part f the brain that cntrls sleep patterns.
    B. A type f cgnitive activity that enhances creativity.
    C. A methd f time management used by prductivity experts.
    D. A small grup f neurns in the brainstem that regulate fcus.
    10. Which gear state f the lcus ceruleus is best fr cgnitive activity?
    A. Gear 1, where the mind can wander freely.
    B. Gear 2, where we are highly engaged and attentive.
    C. Gear 3, where we are hyperalert and quick t respnd.
    D. Any gear state, as they are equally beneficial fr cgnitive activity.
    11. What can be inferred abut the authr’s view?
    A. Cnstant prductivity is the key t success.
    B. Dwntime is a waste f time and shuld be minimized.
    C. Dwntime is as imprtant as uptime fr prductivity.
    D. Dwntime is a must fr thse wh are nt prductive.

Yur favrite fds might nt taste the same in the future, and the climate crisis is behind it.
In suthwest Spain, black Iberian pigs frage (觅食) under centuries-ld ak trees, a prcess essential fr the unique taste f the Jamn Iberic, a special cured ham (腌制火腿) made frm the black-fted pig. Hwever, accrding t Natinal Gegraphic, frequent heat waves and a five-year drught have reduced the number f the trees’ acrns (橡子) as well as the grass arund them. Withut these natural fd surces, the pigs require extra feed, which changes the ham’s unique flavr. It takes 30 years fr ak trees t grw acrns, and alternative feeds like lives wuld make the meat taste bitter and spicy.
Drught als affects the taste f fruits. Watermelns and cantalupes (香瓜), fr instance, display nticeable flavr changes during drught cnditins. Researchers at the Agrifd Research and Technlgy Center f Aragn in Spain explained t the Spanish nline newspaper Public that cmpunds (化合物) such as sugars build up during drught, changing the taste f fd, either psitively r negatively.
Beynd drught, rising temperatures and sea levels als influence fd flavrs. Typically, warm days and cl nights enhance the sugar and acid cntent in fruits, which are essential fr ptimal (最佳的) flavr. Hwever, glbal warming makes this less likely. Fr example, Japanese apples are becming less acidic, sfter, and drier due t early blming and high temperatures during grwth, nted Natinal Gegraphic. Similarly, ysters, which d best in a mix f salt and freshwater, are lsing their distinct flavrs due t their increasingly salty envirnment caused by rising sea levels and heightened river salinity (盐度).
While the fd we cnsume is deeply influenced by the climate crisis, ur fd chices als cntribute t it. Meat and dairy, especially frm cws, significantly impact the climate. Raising livestck (牲畜) accunts fr abut 14.5 percent f the wrld’s greenhuse gas emissins annually, cmparable t the emissins frm all cars, trucks, airplanes, and ships cmbined. Cmpared t plant prtein, prducing animal prtein generally requires mre land, energy and water.
This may seem like a vicius circle (恶性循环), but it is nt impssible t break. The Gd Fd Institute, a US-based think tank prmting alternative prteins, believes peple will chse such ptins if they are as tasty and affrdable as meat.
Meanwhile, mre peple have started t take actin. Accrding t The New Yrk Times, Will Harris, a US farmer, practices regenerative farming by allwing cws t mve arund freely and reducing chemical use and sil disturbance, which is mre envirnmentally friendly. In additin, buying lcal, in-seasn prduce is usually best, as ut-f-seasn fruits and vegetables, especially thse flwn in, have a high carbn ftprint.
    12. Hw des climate change affect Jamn Iberic’s taste?
    A. By transfrming the breed f the pigs.B. By changing the pigs’ natural diet.
    C. By speeding up the aging prcess f the ham.D. By affecting the curing prcess f the ham.
    13. Hw des the authr illustrate the impact f climate change n fruits?
    A. By discussing the acid cntents in fruits.B. By describing changes in fruit size.
    C. By mentining the changes in fruit clr.D. By stressing the sugar buildup during drught.
    14. What is the primary purpse f the authr in the last paragraph?
A T argue fr stricter farming regulatins.
    B. T demnstrate the failure t fight climate change.
    C. T encurage mre sustainable farming practices.
    D. T prmte the cnsumptin f imprted fruits.
    15. What is a suitable title fr the text?
    A. The Flavrs f Climate ChangeB. The Future f Fd Prductin
    C. The Impact f Drught n AgricultureD. Climate Change and Fd Security
