There are three kinds f peple in this wrld. Thse wh lve Butter Chicken, thse wh think Butter Chicken is verrated and thse wh have never tasted Butter Chicken. Of all f these, I feel deep srrw fr the third kind. It is a lss f gigantic prprtins, in my pinin.
Delhi, arguably the culinary (烹饪的) capital f India, wes a large part f its flavur heritage t the Mughals (印度贵族). Butter Chicken, hwever, has far mre humble rigins, and was brn far clser t hme. It nly dates back a cuple f decades t pre-partitin India, and its stry takes us t a sweet-shp, wned by an elderly gentleman called Mkha. It was here that yung Gujral wrked, where he helped invent the Tandri Chicken that we all lve tday. Yes, yu heard that right, this stry als includes the inventin f the famus Tandri Chicken.
There came a time when Mkha’s health drpped and he eventually sld the shp t Gujral wh renamed it as Mti Mahal. As a sharp businessman, Gujral realized that the Tandri Chicken hanging abve the tandr (印度烤炉) all day wuld tend t dry ut if unsld. He then came up with the genius idea f creating a basic sauces with tmates, butter, cream and sme spices t immerse the Tandri Chicken pieces in, helping them regain misture and becme tasty again. And thus, was brn the Butter chicken.
When India was partitined, Gujral mved t Delhi and s did Mti Mahal, with Butter Chicken and Tandri Chicken in tw. The small utlet grew fast and nw, almst 70 years later, it has a successful chain f restaurants with utlets far and wide, managed by his grandsn, Mnish. A few years back, when I was reviewing Masala Library in Mumbai, I was surprised t find Butter Chicken n the tasting menu. What started then, is nw a full-fledged mvement t take the humble dish and reinvent r present it in innvatin. Tday, yu will find Butter Chicken tacs, pizzas, rlls, burgers, biryani and just abut everything yu can think f. I bet when Gujral invented Butter Chicken, little did he knw that he was creating histry, in a way.

In Belgium, a cmpany called HydrVlta is imprving ways t take salt water and turn it int fresh water under the Hrizn-funded SnixED prject.
The vast majrity f the earth’s water is salt water. Only 3% is fresh water and less than ne third f that is accessible, the rest being lcked away in glaciers and grundwater. “We will need t treat salt water s peple can drink it and industry can use it,” said Gerge Brik, chief executive fficer f Hydr Vlta. “But with current technlgies, desalinatin (脱盐) requires high peratinal csts. On tp f that, existing technlgies use high amunts f energy and chemicals.”
The basic technique nw t turn salt water int fresh water is electrdialysis (电渗析), where a kind f membrane (隔膜) is used t separate salt frm water. But the methd has a weak pint: the membrane gets dirty easily and requires chemicals and high pressure t clean. That in turn invlves large amunts f energy. Under SnixED, HydrVlta has develped ultrasund technlgy that keeps the membrane clean in a much mre efficient way.
Energy use in this field depends n pressure, which is measured in a metric unit knwn as bar. Existing technlgies t desalinate seawater take arund 50 t 80 bar, while the new desalinatin technlgy uses just ne t three bar. What’s even better is that a greater amunt f fresh water can nw be generated. “Existing technlgies waste arund 60% t 65% f the seawater that’s taken in,” said Brik. “Our new technlgy imprves the situatin. If we take in 100 litres f seawater, we can prduce 65 litres f drinkable water.”
HydrVlta thinks this technlgy will be beneficial t larger cmpanies that generate drinkable water as well as t industrial businesses that need water t fuel their peratins. Meanwhile, Brik says the new desalinatin technlgy may need a push frm gvernments t encurage a bigger demand. “They can be the first custmers,” he added.
    8. What d Gerge Brik’s wrds in Paragraph 2 imply?
    A. Treating salt water is f great imprtance.
    B. The wrld is facing a serius water shrtage.
    C. Better desalinatin technlgies are needed.
    D. Current desalinatin technlgies are n lnger useful.
    9. What is the prblem with electrdialysis?
    A. It cnsumes t much energy.
    B. The membrane is rare t find.
    C. The water it prduces is a little salty.
    D. It requires cmplex ultrasund technlgy.
    10. What d we knw abut the new desalinatin technlgy?
    A. It takes mre energy than existing technlgies.
    B. It prduces clean water mre efficiently.
    C. It gives up the use f membrane t functin.
    D. It needs mre seawater t prduce fresh water.
    11. Which statement will Brik prbably agree with?
    A. HydrVlta can slve the water crisis wrldwide.
    B. The new desalinatin technlgy needs fficial supprt.
C HydrVlta has great difficulty in finding its first custmers.
    D. The new desalinatin technlgy is unsuited t small cmpanies.
    D
The pwer f human language cmes nt nly frm the precisin f its signals and the cmplexity f its grammar but als frm its links t cgnitin (认知). Babies as yung as 3 mnths have begun t link language and cre cgnitive capacities.
Previus wrk in the lab had fund that fr babies aged 3 t 4 mnths, listening t bth human vcalizatins (发声) (their native language) and nn-human primate vcalizatins (calls f mnkeys) bsted cgnitin. It remained unknwn whether all human languages wuld have this advantageus effect.
In a new study, the researchers cnsidered English-acquiring 3-t 4-mnth-ld babies’ respnses t tw nn-native languages (German r Cantnese)—in the cntext f the classic bject categrizatin task. In this cgnitive task, babies first viewed a series f “familiarizatin” images frm ne bject categry (e.g., dinsaurs). Then they viewed tw new “test” images at the same time: a new example frm the familiarized categry (e.g., anther dinsaur; “a familiar bject”) and a new mdel frm a nvel categry (e.g., a fish; “a nvel bject”). Babies’ ability t distinguish between the familiar and nvel test images, measured by their lking times, indicates whether they have frmed the bject categry.
Crucially, babies’ success in the task depends upn the sund infrmatin that accmpanies the visual images presented during familiarizatin. “We fund that German, which is phnlgically (音系地) ‘near’ t English, facilitated bject categrizatin. But Cantnese, which is phnlgically ‘distant’, did nt,” said Danielle Perszyk, lead authr f the study.
“Babies’ respnses t the tw nn-native languages tested, cnsidered in cmbinatin with their respnses t English and t the sunds f mnkeys, are cnsistent with the pssibility that babies’ earliest links t cgnitin riginate frm tw distinct mechanisms. Only ne f them is used specifically fr human speech,” she added.
When babies are 3 t 4 mnths ld, vcalizatins f nn-human primates may bst their cgnitin by engaging anther system, ne nt specialized fr speech. Hwever, the cgnitive advantage is shrt-lived: nly lasts fr 2 t 3mnths. The study als prvides the first evidence that babies’ increasingly precise cgnitive tuning t the sunds f their native language sets restrictins n the range f human languages they will link t cgnitin.
    12. What can we knw abut babies aged 3 t 4 mnths accrding t previus wrk?
    A. They get a cgnitive bnus after expsure t animal sunds.
    B. They can tell human languages frm thse f animals.
    C. They have a gift fr mastering diverse languages.
    D. They shw n interest in nn-native languages.
    13. What des Paragraph 3 mainly talk abut?
    A. An evaluatin f babies’ learning ability.
    B. A stry regarding babies’ ability t distinguish images.
    C. An experiment n babies’ ways f native language learning.
    D. An bject categrizatin experiment n babies’ cgnitive link.
    14. Which f the fllwing may Danielle Perszyk agree with?
    A. Peple may prefer certain languages at a yung age.
    B. Babies may adpt different systems t build cgnitive links.
    C. Babies’ cgnitive links are dependent n their learning habits.
    D. Peple can develp early cgnitive links thrugh familiar languages.
    15. What may babies’ precise cgnitive tuning t sunds f their native language bring abut?
    A. Imprving their speech prcessing system.
    B. Enhancing their desire t pick up new languages.
    C. Limiting their cgnitive assciatins with ther languages.
    D. Affecting their ability t distinguish between different languages.

My daughter Kathy’s birthday was appraching. Last Sunday, in the early mrning, she asked me whether I’d buy her a birthday gift.
I said, “Of curse. And t buy the gift, I decide t sell yur never-t-be-used-again baby things that still lk new and useful. Will yu allw it?” She immediately agreed and began srting ut her baby stuff. My husband Sam gladly jined us. Sn, we gathered the stuff well enugh. I decided t take them t the secnd-hand market in the fllwing week and then use the mney cllected t buy Kathy the bike she dreamed abut.
Thinking abut that, I waved Kathy and Sam gdbye and left fr the lcal hspital t visit an ill friend there. After twenty-five minutes f drive, I arrived. And after seeing my friend, I went t turn in my visitr’s pass at the hspital desk. There, I verheard an argument between a receptinist (接待员) and a wrried and disappinted man whse clthes were a little wrn ut. The receptinist was explaining that his newbrn girl culdn’t leave the hspital withut an infant car seat.
Cnfused, the man asked, “What’s n earth an infant car seat? Hw much can ne cst?” Based n his accent and appearance, I guessed he prbably was new here. While I bserved the man, the receptinist tld him, “Sir, it’s a sft seat made specifically t prtect infants and yunger babies in a vehicle. It can be easily put in the vehicle. The price ften ranges frm 70 dllars t 550 dllars.”
S upset, the man said, “Where can I get such a seat at this time and where can I get the mney t buy ne?” “I’m srry, sir, but this is what the state law requires. Nbdy can take a baby ut f the hspital withut that seat,” the receptinist said. “Yur wife can g hme with yu tday, but the baby can’t leave unless she’s in a car seat.”
My daughter just had an infant car seat, which I had planned t sell. Finding the man lked s helpless, I wndered whether t give him Kathy’s seat fr free.
