It was mid-December, and the temperature was a chilly minus 20-degree Celsius. I walked with my head dwn, passing the hmeless beggars and ignring all f them as usual. Then I saw him, sitting against a building, wrapped in thin clth, hlding a white cup in frnt f him. I heard his shaky, pitiful vice target me as I sped past him.
“Spare sme change?” he asked. “I’ll appreciate it.”
I didn’t even bther lking up at him. In my mind, I briefly pictured him walking int the clsest pub and drinking whisky with whatever mney he managed t get. Or, maybe he needed anther sht f ccaine. See, like mst peple in the city, it tk me nly mments t pass judgement n his life.
    “I have n mney n me.” I said quickly.
Lking back, I feel as thugh fate had set ut that day t teach me a lessn. And it succeeded. Just a few feet past him, I slipped n a piece f ice n the sidewalk! I landed square n my right knee. The acute pain passed thrughut as I lay n the grund. Then I heard a familiar vice nly inches abve me.
“Are yu all right?” he asked.
I knew immediately this was the man I had just rushed past. Befre tears welled up in my eyes, I saw the smth, sympathetic lk in his eyes.
I held his hand as I struggled t get t my feet. He held my arm as I limped (一瘸一拐地走) t the nearby bus stp and sat n the bench.
“My name is Mike,” he said with cncern. “That was quite a fall yu tk, and yu really need t see a dctr.”
“This bus ges past the hspital,” I said quickly, pinting t the bus sign abve me.
Mike paused, and a lk f sudden realizatin crssed his face. He pulled ut his small white cup and dumped all the change int his hand.
“I knw yu dn’t have any change n yu,” he said, “I think this is just enugh fr yu t take the bus.”
    注意:

“Thank yu,” he said gratefully when the bus was appraching.
