Wildfires have recently seriously destroyed areas across the world. Hoping to reduce harm, researchers led by Yapei Wang, a chemist at Renmin University of China, say they have developed a sensor to detect such wildfires earlier and with less effort.
Present detection methods rely heavily on human watchfulness, which can delay an effective response. The team says its new sensor can be placed near tree trunks’ bases and send a wireless signal to a nearby receiver if there is a sharp temperature increase. That heat also powers the sensor itself, with no need to replace batteries. The sudden temperature change will produce electrons (电子) to move within the liquids, creating electrical energy to send the signal.
McCarty, a geographer at Miami University says places such as San Diego — where wild land and city meet — could benefit from sensors like this. When a fire breaks out in a valley that extends to someone’s property, she says, with such a device, “as a homeowner, you will know it earlier than the fire agency.” And she adds that it is even more important to improve cooperation among the different agencies involved in firefighting.
Wang says his team’s next steps are to extend the device’s signal range beyond the present 100 meters, which can limit its practical use, and to develop a protective cover for it. The sensor’s effectiveness, Wang notes, will also need to be tested in the field.
4. What can we learn about the new sensor?
A. It replaces batteries itself.
B. It produces response more easily.
C. It depends on human observation.
D. It sends a wireless signal continuously.
5. What’s McCarty’s attitude towards the new sensor?
A. Critical. B. Ambiguous.
C. Supportive. D. Indifferent.
6. What will probably be talked about if the passage continues?
A. How people use the new sensor.
B. How much the new sensor costs.
C. How the new sensor comes into effect.
D. How Wang’s team better the new sensor.
7. What’s the best title for the text?
A. A research into wildfires.
B. A widely accepted new sensor.
C. A new senor to detect wildfires.
D. Different opinions on a new sensor.

Space travel is definitely bad for astronauts’ bones, reducing their bone density (密度) after only a month of weightlessness, according to French research published on Friday.
Laurence Vico and his fellow workers at St Etienne University called for more research into the effects of microgravity, after their study of 15 astronauts from the Russian MIR station showed bone loss continued throughout space flights.
“Bone loss was especially striking in four astronauts,” the scientists reported in the Lancet medical journal.
They measured the bone mineral density (BMD) of bones in the forearm (前臂) and lower leg of the astronauts who had spent one to six months in space.
The BMD loss was significant in the tibia (胫骨) of the lower leg, a weight-bearing bone, but barely changed in the radius (桡骨) of the forearm. “Our results indicate the need to investigate not only different bones, but also different areas of the same bone since not all sites of the skeleton (骨架) are similarly affected by space conditions,” they added.
Without gravity the body isn’t bearing any weight so there is no need for calcium (钙) which makes bones strong, and it becomes empty into the bloodstream.
The research team suggested in future scientists should try to determine if the loss of bone density was only on weight-bearing bones on longer flights, also the possible recovery after returning to Earth.
8. In the third paragraph, the underlined word “striking” means _____________.
A. unusual B. simple
C. weak D. slow
9. French scientists did their research on Russian astronauts, because _____________.
A. they only cared for the Russian astronauts
B. they were not interested in their own astronauts
C. the Russian government invited them to do their research
D. the Russian astronauts worked in space for a long time
10. Scientists have found that _____________.
A. the BMD loss may cause serious illness to astronauts
B. the BMD loss may cause some change in astronauts’ bodies
C. astronauts shouldn’t care about the BMD loss
D. astronauts should take some calcium before space travel
11. What cause the BMD loss to astronauts, according to this passage?
A. The food they eat in space. B. The drinks they take in space.
C. The temperature in space. D. The gravity in space.
D
In most towns today, you can see teenagers standing over electronic machines with flashing lights, shooting at spaceships from other planets and dropping bombs on strange monsters (恶魔). The machines have names like Space Warrior, Dark Invader and so on. It used to be believed that damage was done only to those strange visitors from outer space, but now it seems that they are striking back.
Many teenagers like electronic games so much that they can’t stop playing. They spend hours tightly holding the joystick (游戏杆) controls and constantly pressing buttons marked “fire”. They develop pains on their fingers because of the constant pressure. They play and play that the pains have no chance to cure properly. The rapid wrist movement required to guide the spaceship across the screen causes another problem: The muscles of the wrist and arm become so inflamed and swollen (充血红肿) that they press against the bones. This condition is what doctors now call “Space Warrior’s Wrist”.
Other strange aches and pains also are likely to affect the elbows and shoulders.
Another even more alarming problem is shown by the case of a 17-year-old girl which was recently reported in the British Medical Journal. She had been playing various kinds of electronic games for more than two hours a day. Her father repaired games and machines and she could use the cassettes and systems in his workshop as often as she liked. One day, after playing a game called Dark Invader, she lost consciousness (晕倒) and fell to the floor.
Doctors who examined her found she was suffering from an unusual illness caused by lights flashing at a particular frequency.

A. supports playing electronic games
B. feels very sorry for the girl
C. disagrees with young people’s playing too much electronic games
D. feels worried about young people’s poor health
15. From the passage we can conclude that playing electronic games is _____________.
A. enjoyable and helpful to the study
B. exciting but harmful to the health
C. interesting but harmless to the eyes
D. amusing and satisfying

故填was brought。
故填to include。
故填who。
故填have undertaken。
故填by。
故填a。
八、
Dear Tom,
I am glad that you are interested in the first Science and Technology Festival held in our school last month, which aimed at enriching our school life and promoting our awareness of innovation.
There were a variety of activities in the festival, including the competition Makers on Campus, where participants could show their designs and products, and an exhibition of the students’ original inventions, and designs. With the enthusiastic participation and support of all the students, the activity turned out to be a great success. I was astonished at schoolmates’ creativity and teamwork spirits.
I do hope more activities will be held in my school to provide us with chances to practice our critical thinking skills and problemsolving abilities.
Yours,
Li Hua
