I have always loved music. When I was a teenager, I dreamed of becoming a rock star. Sadly, my effort didn’t match my love, and soon the guitar my mother bought for me lay quietly in the corner. I hated pressing my fingers down on the hard strings. At one time, my guitar teacher shook his head and said I had the rhythm(韵律) of a duck.
Before 2020, I had always believed that I was unable to learn a musical instrument. Then came the lockdown(封控) of 2020. I had to stay in a hotel in Chiang Mai in Thailand with my friend’s guitar. Being locked in the hotel, I had nothing to do but pick up the guitar.
I focused on how to play five of my favorite songs on the guitar. I started slowly, learning how to play by following online classes. I have to agree that counting time(节拍) was very difficult for me, so I gave it up. I just listened to the songs, focused on their rhythms and tried my best to follow them.
Day by day, I started to sound less and less terrible. I practiced the five songs every morning until I found my own rhythm and developed my own style of the songs, even after the lockdown in Chiang Mai was over. Finally, on May 28, 2022, I gave a guitar performance to some strangers and friends. I was so nervous that I forgot to turn the microphone on at the beginning. But when I hit the first chord(和弦), my music was greeted with loud cheers. It was my best memory of 2022.
In short, my word of this past year or the past three years is FOCUS. Time passes by quickly. Another new year has now arrived. Why not set yourself a clear goal (based on your love) and focus on it? Never let anyone tell you what you are not good at. By focusing on your goal, you will be able to surprise everyone.
19. When the writer was a teenager, he learned to play the guitar because ________.

How can we save energy and slow down climate change? Well, one way is to use the right tools, such as solar(太阳能) panels, electric cars and smiley faces.
Wait...smiley faces?
Yes, you read that right. OPower, the new company which works for the utility industry(电力公司) in America, has recently discovered just this. The company has been sending special electricity bills(电费单) to their customers by email. The bills compare the customers’ cost on energy with that of their neighbors. Through this, energy hogs learn that they are more wasteful than others in their their neighbors. The creative bills have led people to start saving energy in this neighborhood. And in the bills, OPower would give smiley faces to people who use less energy than people are helping to fight global greenhouse warming.
“I tell you that you’ve spent $1, 200 on heating this year, you don’t know what that mean.” said Dan Yates, the CEO of OPower. “But if I tell you that you spent so more than your neighbors on heating, you may come to realize something.”
Lots of people have been receiving these special bills. So far, they have cut their energy use by 2% on average. This may not sound like much, but it has been enough for OPower to make to utilities interested in joining. The U.S. government gives prizes to the utilities for helping people save energy. More than 175 utilities have already started to work with OPower. About 2,000. Americans have been receiving these special electricity bills. More and more people are starting rethink their energy use habits.
It seems people never really grow up, as it seems like they can always be affected (受影响) by what other people are doing. And, just like school children competing for the top prize in the class, adults also like receiving a collection of smiley faces.

Reading and writing doesn’t come naturally to people. Although it takes some effort, eighty-six percent of the world’s population have learned how to read and write, and the number has been increasing for centuries. Literacy(读写能力) makes it possible for us to navigate the world filled with books, websites, text messages, road signs, and more. But the world of information is changing. Why send a long letter or text when you can share photos or videos instead? Why learn from a book when you can learn from a video? Why read magazines when you can listen to podcasts(播客)?
Could people join today’s world without the abilities of reading or writing? ____△____ Most of our devices(设备) now talk to us and take spoken orders. Smart cars ask for where you go and then give directions. Smart virtual assistants, like Siri, listen for requests to report the weather, play a song, set a timer and much more. Some apps can also read text aloud or turn speech into text. These devices aren’t perfect—the apps still make silly mistakes. But they’re getting better and better. So in the future, it’s possible that all of our communication with our devices and each other is spoken.
But reading and writing are powerful tools. For one, most people read faster than they speak. A podcaster speaks at around 150 to 160 words each minute, while a strong reader can look through a text at 300 to 400 words each minute. That’s twice as fast! Research has also found that when people read, they can remember more information and stay more interested than when they listen. Learning to read also creates new connections in the brain. With the invention of reading, our brain has been changed, which developed the ways we were able to think, which changed the intellectual evolution(智力进化) of humans. Would we really choose to give up that progress?
What do you think? Do you hope people keep on reading and writing, or will technology make literacy useless?
27. From Paragraph 1, we can learn that________.
A. people like magazines better than podcasts
B. the world of information is becoming different
C. people become better at reading and writing nowadays
D. less than 80% of the world’s population can read and write
28. Which of the following can be the best to fill in “____△____ ” in Paragraph 2?
A. It’s still a dream.
B. Technology makes it possible.
C. Scientists believe it is difficult.
D. Some people are not sure about that.
29. In Paragraph 3, the writer shows most people read faster than they speak by________.
①making comparisons ② telling stories ③listing numbers ④asking questions
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ①③ D. ②④
30. The writer seems to agree that________.
A. it’s easy for people to learn to read and write
B. making all communication spoken is impossible
C. reading can slow down the evolution of our brain
D. humans had better keep on reading and writing
【答案】27 B 28. B 29. C 30. D

【答案】例文:
Dear Sir/Madam,
There’s no doubt that reading plays an important role in our life. However, it’s a pity that only a few students do some reading after class. Here are some reasons.
First, students have too much homework to do so they don’t have time for reading. Second, they don’t have a good habit of reading. They would rather spend their spare time on TV or on the Internet. In fact, reading makes a full man. It can not only increase our knowledge and enrich our mind, but also open up a whole new world to us.
To solve this problem, I think teachers should give less homework to us so that we can have more time to read. Moreover, we can join reading clubs and share books with each other.
Old habits die hard. So start reading before it’s too late.
