I was walking into my first school in Peru. I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my parents, who had been here for three years, hoping Peru would help my future. My father decided that I would be better off going to school here, so I enrolled(登记)in the local high school in my new town. I was afraid how I would do. On the first day, I went to my second period class after I had missed my first. With anxiety, I reached for the door, opening it slowly: Without paying attention to my classmates, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a sol voice he answered. “Yes.” His voice comforted me a little. He gave me a sheet called Course Requirements, which I would never get in India because we didn’t have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India wo had fixed seats, so I never needed to worry about that. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector. In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology we had. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke. It was noon. I was very confused about when I would have lunch. I went to my next class and the bell rang as I entered. I went through the regular process of asking the teacher if I was in the right class. She said, “It’s still fourth period.”“But the bell just rang,” I said. Changing from a gentle tone to a harsher(刺耳的)one, she said, “That is the lunch bell, young man.”I apologized. Without another word 1 headed for the cafeteria. I felt lucky because we didn’t have this in India. Every confusion seemed like a barrier I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I was on my way to the bus which we didn’t have in India either. I spotted my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, today wasn`t so bad.24The author attended a Peru’s high school because________.Ahis father preferred Peru’s schools       Bhis family wanted him to have a bright futureChis mother had worked in it for 3 years   Dhe had been longing to leave his homeland25What do we know about the author’s first day of school?AHe went to the wrong class for the second period.BHe met some enthusiastic teachers and classmates.CHe got the Course Requirements sheet from his classmate.DHe experienced differences from the Indian schools in many ways.26How did the author feel at the end of the day?AWorried BPuzzled CRelieved DExcited27What’s the best title of the passage?AI Began to Go to School BMy First Day of SchoolCTo Stan a School Day Isn’t Easy DMy Work at SchoolCJohn Montefiore's path to graduation from the University of Toronto was a little unusual. He recently completed his bachelor's degree(学士学位) which he started in1995.Montefiore left university in 1996 and tried to tell himself that a degree wasn't necessary for personal success. But it remained unfinished business until he made the decision to return in 2018 at the age 42. At that time, his job development stalled, so he made up his mind to go back to school in order to improve himself and work well in future. The second time around, Montefiore never missed a class and always sat in the front row. He found many courses invaluable and he received the Award of Excellence twice. He found support services played an important role in his successful return. He said, “I hadn't written a paper for years, so I found the college writing centre to be of great use. Before I handed in a paper, they would give me feedback, which was really great. The university has so much built in to help students succeed and I'm so thankful for that.” But he also met difficulties this time. As a student much older than others, he found it harder to make friends with classmates. However, no matter what had happened before, he finally got his bachelor's degree. He said, “After all these years, I had thought it wouldn't mean anything, but it means a lot. I totally understand the value of education now. It's not necessarily the value that other people see in it, but the value it gives me as a person, for my confidence and my self-esteem. It also helps me prepare well before I re-enter the workplace.”28Why was Montefiore's graduation unusual?AHe had achieved personal success before.       BHe understood the importance of a degree.CHe finished his degree at a much older age.      DHe began his university study at a young age.29What does the underlined word "stalled" in paragraph 2 probably mean?AStopped. BStarted. CSurvived. DSucceeded.30What can we learn about Montefiore from the third paragraph?AHe got good grades very easily. BHe took his study seriously this timeCHe was thankful for his classmates' help DHe had difficulty using support services.31What did Montefiore learn from his experience?AConfidence is important in one's life.               BOthers' opinions on education matter a lot.CHigher education is a must for personal success.      DEducation makes one feel better about himself.DAs people get older, the types and numbers of friends they have tend to change. As young adults, humans have large groups of friends. With age, they often prefer to spend their time with just a few close, positive individuals. Researchers long believed that this aging attraction toward meaningful relationships was unique to humans, but a new study finds that chimps (大猩猩) also have similar tendencies.Rosati and her colleagues used 78,000 hours of observations made over 20 years from the Kibale Chimpanzee Project in Uganda. The data looked at the social interactions of 21 male chimps between 15 and 58 years old. The researchers only studied male chimps because they show stronger social bonds and have more social interactions than female chimps.Researchers found that wild chimpanzees share a similar pattern of social aging with humans. Rosati says, “They prefer strong, mutual social bonds and interact with others in more positive ways as they get older.” The older chimpanzees preferred spending more time with chimps that they had become friends with over the years. They would sit close to these long-time companions and groom (梳毛) each other. By contrast, younger chimps had more one-sided relationships where they would groom a friend, but the action wasn’t returned.Older male chimps were also more likely to spend more time alone. The researchers said that they showed a shift from negative interactions to more positive ones, preferring to spend their later years in nonconfrontational (非对抗性的), positive relationships. Researchers call the preference a “positivity bias”.Researchers theorize that chimps, like humans, are able to change their social focus as they age. “We propose that this aging pattern may be the result of shared changes in our abilities to regulate our emotions with age,” Rosati says. “This shared pattern between chimpanzees and humans could represent an adaptive response where older adults focus on important social relationships that provide benefits and avoid interactions that have negative consequences as they lose competitive fighting ability.”32What does the new study find about chimps?AMale chimps show more interactions than females.BOld chimps don’t care about friends as much as young ones.CChimps concentrate more on meaningful relations with age.DChimps share aging problems similar to human beings.33How did Rosati and her colleagues conduct their research?ABy studying the data provided by other researchers.BBy making scientific investigations and observations.CBy setting up models on the computer in the lab.DBy monitoring both the humans’ and chimps’ behavior.34What do researchers think causes this aging attraction to meaningful relationships?AInability to regulate emotions.    BEagerness to build closer relationships.CLoss of competitiveness in strength.   DFailure to adapt to the changeable nature.35Where does this text probably come from?AA short story collection. BA popular science magazine.CA graduate research paper. DA biology textbook.第二节(5小题;每小题2分,满分10)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。How to Do a Travel VlogA vlog is a video blog, mostly about a person’s daily life. Due to the heavy snowfall, almost everyone at the bus stop had rushed inside to avoid the cold, making the bus more crowded than ever. When driving, Timmy was surprised to hear the passengers arguing. “I wonder how his mother raised him. Can’t he see that the poor lady is in trouble? She’s been standing for so long!” Timmy heard a woman complain loudly. When he looked in the mirror, he noticed a woman, probably in her late twenties, standing beside an old woman and casting a stern (严厉的) look at a window seat. Timmy noticed the passenger sitting on the seat was Jonathan, the 10-year-old boy who was a frequent passenger on his bus. Jonathan sat quietly on his seat, with his eyes wide open, staring at the passengers criticizing him. But the boy didn’t speak a single word, which annoyed the passengers even more. “Well,” the old woman finally spoke up, “I am really sorry for the young child. I don’t mind standing here, but I’m struck by how he’s listening to everything we’re saying to him while acting as if he doesn’t understanding anything.” For safe driving, Timmy didn’t say anything. He continued driving until next stop, at which he slowly rose from his seat, picked up a pair of crutches (拐杖), and proceeded to Jonathan’s seat. He smiled at the boy and told him that he had arrived at the destination in sign language. Jonathan returned his smile and gestured a thank you. He then exited the bus using the crutches. After Jonathan had left, Timmy looked around the passengers. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________The next day, the older woman visited Jonathan and his mother. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
