    Technlgy Keeps Grandparents and Grandchildren Cnnected
    When it cmes t keeping in tuch with grandchildren, grandparents need t learn new technlgies. They are taking advantage f chices like vide chatting, text messaging and scial media (社交网络媒介) t keep in tuch with their grandchildren in mre ways than ever befre, accrding t a survey.
    Mary Taylr is a typical case. She depends n vide chatting t stay in tuch with her grandchildren, all f whm are under the age f seven. They live in different cuntries. Mary says vide chatting is the next best thing t being with her grandchildren even thugh it requires planning t schedule calls and taking the time differences int accunt (考虑到). “It’s nt always perfect, ” she says, “but it’s certainly better than talking n the phne, especially with kids at thse ages. ”
    Accrding t the survey, mre than 20% f grandparents use vide chatting t cmmunicate, which is a little less than the number f thse wh ften use text messaging but mre than thse wh prefer t use scial media.
    But with a number f chices ut there, keeping up with new technlgies can be a challenge fr them. 74-year-ld Mary Carr-McNally says she calls her grandchildren back when they text her. “I’m nt very gd at texting, s I call them back, and then we chat, ” she says.
    In all, mre than 30% f them say that learning new technlgies is difficult. That’s why phne calls remain the mst ppular frm f cmmunicatin fr grandparents, nearly half f whm say they talk with their grandchildren by phne.
    Still, mre than 40% f grandparents say they’re gd at learning new technlgies. Take Alice Smith fr example. She wns a laptp, a tablet and a smartphne, and uses them t keep in tuch with her five grandchildren aged 4 t 16. She says she likes t text the lder three and depends n vide chatting with the yunger nes.
    “Texting is quick and simple. But we can d a lt f things n vide chatting, ” she says. “If the kids want t see smething, I walk arund and shw them. Vide chatting als allws me t see my lved ne’s facial expressins as we speak and des nt require typing (打字) r reading small print. It’s the next best thing t meeting smene face-t-face. ”

    A new study shws that air pllutin can influence ur intelligence (智力) — cause a “huge” reductin in ur intelligence. The study was carried ut by researchers at Peking University and Yale University. Xi Chen f the Yale Schl f Public Health led the study.
    The study perfrmed fr a lng perid. The researchers studied abut 25,000 peple frm acrss China. The yungest peple in the study were 10 years ld, while the ldest was 90. They came frm 25 f China’s 34 prvinces (省) with different air levels. These Chinese men, wmen and children were given language and math tests during the study. Then researchers cmpared the test results with levels f pllutin in the air. They fund that breathing plluted air can reduce a persn’s educatin level by abut ne year.
    Xi Chen tld that there are tw main parts in the brain—white matter and gray matter. He said, “Air pllutin has a great effect n the white matter, and white matter is mre cnnected with a persn’s language skills. S, that’s why language skills are mre affected.” He als nted ther studies have shwn, “Hwever gray matter is cnnected t ur ability t slve math prblems.”
    Chen suggests gvernment t make serius changes. “We need t supprt in cleaning up the sky instead f using in shrt-term avidance, fr example the face masks r air filters (过滤).”

The term “plgging” is created by cmbining the English wrd “jgging” and “plcka upp”, a Swedish term that means “picking up”.
    A Swedish man called Eric Ahlstrm started the mvement. After mving frm a Swedish ski resrt t Stckhlm, Eric nticed a lt f litter when he rde t wrk each day. S, he decided t d smething abut it. In 2016, Eric began rganizing grups t pick up rubbish while jgging, and thus “plgging” was brn. It spread t ther cuntries in 2018, fllwing increased cncern abut plastic pllutin.
    Plgging is cnsidered a perfect activity, as it is psitive bth fr the bdy, and fr the envirnment. There’s n dubt that mving yur bdy will d great things fr yur health, and plgging will als add sme extra mves like squatting (蹲下) r bending (弯曲) yur bdy. Accrding t a research, plgging fr 10 minutes burns 48 calries, while usual jgging fr 10 minutes burns abut 39 calries.
    Plgging is a mvement that anyne can jin. T get started, chse plgging rute that yu knw is heavily littered but still cnsidered safe. D nt frget t bring yur recyclable rubbish bags and glves, as well as sme hand sanitizer (消毒纸巾) if necessary. Yu can jg alne r in grups.
