My kids sit in Gee’s living room and gently lift the New Year ornaments(装饰品) out of a well-loved cardboard box. Gee stands beside them, quietly explaining each treasure. She tells them that she and Tom built their ornament collection piece by piece during each year’s after-New Year sale.
We first met Tom and Gee in the early days of our marriage. Someone had been returning our garbage cans to the garage each garbage day, and Jim and I had wondered who. Then one day we spotted him:an elderly man who lived across the street.
I baked cookies and left them in a chair outside the garage with a thank-you note. When we got home from work that day, a typed letter had replaced the gift. The letter was from Tom and explained how he had come to walk the neighborhood on garbage day, returning garbage cans for people he barely knew.
Then, his young wife, Gee, found herself living alone. Neighbors had taken the time to handle her garbage cans.
We photocopied that letter and attached it to one of our own for Gee. We told her how special Tom had been to us, how we grieved(悲伤) for her, and how thankful we were to have known him.
When Gee invited us over to look through the New Year ornaments, I realized how hard it must be to part with that box, a piece of Tom. It’s the man who lets our kids pick peaches off the tree in his front yard. It’s the ladies who call Tom when their pool filter breaks.
These days, we’re piling up boxes of our own. We are planning a move, but Jim and I agree to wait until January. This New Year, we’ll decorate our furniture with Gee’s ornaments, out of the box that is labeled in Tom’s handwriting. Thank you, I’ll say, for teaching us what it means to be a neighbor.

Boyan Slat is 26. If you saw him walking down the street in Delft, Netherlands — a skinny guy with a long mop of dark hair, jeans, his shirt hanging loose — you might think he was just a student at a local technical university. And so he was, seven years ago, right before he dropped out of college.
Slat’s life began to change after a holiday trip to Greece with his family when he was 16. Before taking a diving course, he had expected to see beautiful sea animals. However, what he actually saw in the ocean was an awful lot of plastic waste. From that moment on, Slat dived into a project to find a solution to this alarming problem. Struck by the idea for a floating barrier that could collect plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, he founded his company, The Ocean Cleanup, at the age of 18. Although the idea was named one of the best inventions of 2015 by TIME magazine, he received negative feedback from the specialists in environmental issues.
Slat was not discouraged and saw his mission as a race against time. It is estimated that up to 14 million tons of plastic enter the oceans from land every year. Plastic gradually breaks down into very small pieces called microplastics (塑料微粒), which can eventually enter the food chain.
After five and a half years’ hard work, the Dutch inventor launched the world’s first ocean plastic cleanup system: System 001. The U-shaped pipe, about 609 meters in length, snakes its way out under the Golden Gate Bridge into the Pacific. These floating barriers will capture plastic waste as the ocean currents (洋流) flow past. Ships will collect the waste and bring it to land for recycling every few months. According to Slat, if all goes to plan, an array of 60 systems could reduce the amount of plastic there by as much as 50 percent by 2025.
However, there remains a problem: What will happen to the plastic brought back to shore from Slat’s systems? It’s likely that lots of the waste will eventually be recycled into more single-use plastics that end up back in the oceans. That doesn’t mean Slat will give up. “Big problems require big solutions, ” he says. “If anyone has any better ideas, I’d love to know. ”
28. What contributes to Slat’s idea of solving plastic waste in the ocean?
A. A vacation abroad.
B. Negative feedback from the experts.
C. Diving deep into the ocean.
D. A floating barrier to collect plastic.
29. How does plastic waste harm the world at last?
A. It will pollute the ocean.
B. It will make the ocean too dirty to swim in.
C. It will make it difficult for ocean currents to flow.
D. It will be contained in the foods for humans.
30. What can we know about System 001 from the passage?
A. It’s the world’s best ocean plastic cleanup system.
B. It winds its way into the Pacific.
C. Ships will capture the plastic waste.
D. The amount of plastic will be decreased by a quarter.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To praise. B. To warn.
C. To inform. D. To entertain.
D
China’s digital currency may be the world’s first. According to Xinhua Newspaper, China may issue the world’s first central bank digital currency (CBDC) to cut the costs of circulating traditional paper money and boost policy makers’ control of money supply. The CBDC is a new form of money issued digitally by the central bank and serves as legal currency. The to-be-issued currency could be put into electronic wallets to support direct and peer-to-peer transactions (对等交易). The “wallet” could be an app on a smartphone, but the final design has not yet been settled.
At the beginning stage, the CBDC is for domestic use only. In the future, it is designed to adopt the same exchange rate as physical money, but the international transaction system will be much more complex. “If China successfully issued the world’s first CBDC, it will motivate other countries to make relevant studies and join the competition of creating CBDC, ” said Huang Yiping, director of the Institute of Digital Finance at Peking University. As some officials said, the CBDC will replace bank notes and coins, or the cash in circulation and it is designed for retail (零售) payments at the early stage.
In other countries, many central banks have begun planning to issue their own digital currencies. The Bank for International Settlements, a club of central banks, last month said it expects one — fifth of the world’s population will have access to a CBDC by 2024.
China is the clear frontrunner. On February 17th it ended the third big test of its digital currency, handing out 10 million yuan to 50, 000 shoppers in Beijing. It has announced a joint venture (合资企业) with SWIFT, an interbank-messaging system used for international payments. Sweden, another supporter, has extended its digital currency project.
The latest big central bank to get serious about a CBDC is the European Central Bank (ECB). Speaking to The Economist on February 10th, Christine Lagarde, its president, said she planned to seek approval from her colleagues to begin preparing for a digital EURO.
32. What can we say about the CBDC?
A. It has been issued in China.
B. It will be used legally in China.
C. It is a new form of paper money.
D. It could be put into people’s wallets.
33. What can we know from the passage?
A. Digital currency has replaced the paper money totally.
B. The world population will have access to CBDC by 2024.
C. Sweden has begun to study its own digital currency.
D. ECB has got approval from its members for a digital EURO.
34. What does the underlined word “frontrunner” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Adventurer. B. Pioneer.
C. Challenger. D. Supporter.
35. From which is the passage probably taken?
A. A science journal. B. An economic magazine.
C. A computer paper. D. An educational report.

The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop. ” someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. Jane and Tom rushed out of the door and went along the corridor through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed suit.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them. They called her Auntie Makcik. Jane began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pajamas(睡衣)—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
“She may have run for safety like everyone else!” Tom said. However, Jane refused to give up and said, “I know Makcik is still inside. ” Jane was familiar with Makcik’s daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. “Go downstairs. Go now! Go!”
