In November 2020, US climber Emily Harrington, 34, took on El Capitan--a 3000 foot(914 meters) rock formation(岩层) in Yosemite National Park, US. She accomplished her feat within a day and became the first woman to free-climb the Golden Gate route.
It used to take weeks for rock climbers to reach the top of El Capitan, even with the help of a partner and climbing aids. In recent years, only three people--all men-- had free-climbed the Golden Gate route on El Capitan in 24 hours, according to CNN.
Although rock climbing has long been dominated by men, the number of female climbers has been rising in recent years. Even in the pandemic, many of them have made great achievements and pushed human limits.
“I spent a lot of years feeling like I didn't belong, like maybe I hadn't earned my place to be a Yosemite climber,” she told the San Francisco Chronicle. “But throughout this experience I learned that there is no belonging or not belonging, no formula to achievement up there.”
The rising number of female climbing enthusiasts should come as no surprise. According to the website Climbing.com. “Climbing is one of the few sports where it's possible to level the playing field. Women's flexibility helps offset anything we may lack in strength, bridging the gap between the sexes.”
Legendary Austrian climber Angela Eiter is another strong female figure in the climbing world. In 2020 Eiter made news as she climbed the unknown face she calls Madame Ching in her home country.
According to the New York Post, the route was free of traces. That means Eiter has to search for the holds and predict how the moves were going to play out by herself. Worse still, the rock there is really fragile and some holds had to be fixed with glue. But after intensive indoor training to visualize(构思) the route and build up her strength, Eiter, who stands 154 cm high and weighs 46 kg, made it.
“I am not the strongest woman and I am very small, and I am happy that I can show other women that they can also do it,” she told the New York Post.
As Climbing.com noted, this battle with oneself embodies(体现) the spirit behind the sport. “Maybe that's why more women feel more empowered to find their own way, break free of the mold(模式) and climb what we want to climb. Women have decided to follow their hearts.”
    4. What did Emily Harrington accomplish?
    A. She was the first person to take on El Capitan successfully.
    B. She reached the top of El Capitan within a day.
    C. She free-climbed the Golden Gate route within weeks.
    D. She climbed the Golden Gate route with climbing aids.
    5. The underlined word “offset” in paragraph 5 can be replaced by ________.
    A. bring about B. make up for C. build up D. make for
    6. What difficulty did Angela Eiter meet with when climbing Madame Ching?
    A. There were no traces to follow.
    B. There were no holds to use.
    C. Her prediction about the route was wrong.
    D. she didn't bring necessities like glue.
    7. What can we learn from Harrington and Eiter?
    A. Work hard to be a role model. B. Find where you belong.
    C. Always battle others. D. Be brave and pursue your goal.
B 5. B 6. A 7. D
根据文章首段的介绍“In November 2020, US climber Emily Harrington, 34, took on El Capitan--a 3000 foot(914 meters) rock formation in Yosemite National Park, US. She accomplished her feat within a day”(2020年11月,34岁的美国攀岩者艾米丽·哈林顿登顶了埃尔卡皮坦——美国约塞米蒂国家公园的一个3000英尺高,约合914米的岩层。
解答此类题目需要回到原文语境中,找到该词所在的第五段句子“Women's flexibility helps offset anything we may lack in strength, bridging the gap between the sexes.”(女性身体的灵活性有助于offset我们身体力量上的任何不足,弥合了两性之间的差别),句中短语bridge the gap between the sexes(弥合了两性之间的差别)可起到线索提示作用,而主句中提到的两个方面是flexibility(灵活性)和strength(力量),又根据大众的普遍认知,整体上女性身体灵活性优于男性,男性身体力量则大于女性,故可推断灵活性可帮助“弥补”力量度上的不足,从而拉平差距,A. bring about引起,导致;B. make up for补偿,弥补;C. build up增进,加强;D. make for导致,有助于,走向。
故选A。
    C
Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives (蜂窝)—either recorded or real—may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer’s crops.
In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmer to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away.
Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next,Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family.
From a distance, Lucy switched on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.
Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn’t tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial (最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.
    8. We know from the passage that elephants may be frightened of .
    A. loud noises B. some crops
    C. video cameras D. angry bees
    9. As mentioned in the passage, Lucy .
    A. works by herself in Africa
    B. needs to test more elephant groups
    C. has stopped elephants eating crops
    D. has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms
    10. Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive?
    A. To record the sound of bees.
    B. To make a video of elephants.
    C. To see if elephants would run away.
    D. To find out more about the behavior of bees.
    11. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
    A. Young elephants ignore African honeybees.
    B. Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place.
    C. Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them.
    D. Farmers do not allow Lucy to conduct tests in their fields.
D 9. B 10. A 11. C
根据第一段第一句“Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says.( 一项新的研究表明,蜜蜂发出的愤怒声音的录音足以让强壮的非洲大象逃跑)”可知,大象会害怕愤怒的蜜蜂。
根据最后一段第二句“She hasn't tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial (最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers.( 她还没有对足够多的象群进行测试,但她的初步结果令人鼓舞,足以开始用于农民试验)”可知,Lucy需要检测更多的大象群。
根据第三段前两句“Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life.( Lucy在肯尼亚北部的一棵树上发现了一个野生蜂巢,并安装了一台录音机。然后她往蜂箱里扔了一块石头,蜜蜂们一下子就炸开了)”可知,Lucy向野生蜂窝扔石头,是让蜜蜂生气从而记录下蜜蜂的声音。故选A。
根据第二段第一句“In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them.( 2002年,科学家Lucy King和她的团队发现大象会避开某些有蜜蜂生活的树)”可知,C项“大象不会靠近有蜜蜂的树”是正确的。故选C。

    D
I personally think trains are exciting and romantic. I must admit that trains are not important means of transportation in the US, but I do have some experiences with them.
When I was a child, growing up in a small town with very little entertainment, we used to go to the station to watch the passenger trains coming in. There was something exciting about the steaming, roaring string of trains coming into view around the mountains, slowly growing larger and louder and finally after their stop crowds of strangers spilling (漏出)onto the platform.
I took my first train trip when I was ten years old. I went with my elder sister to visit our cousins six hundred miles away. The train — so loud and violent on the outside — was gentle and rocking inside. We were very excited, and as that was also our first time away from our parents, we felt somewhat frightened too. However, because I had expected so much, I was a little disappointed when I was finally one of the passengers I had watched for so long.
As a college student, I used to ride an overnight train to my roommate's hometown. We could never afford a sleeper, so we played cards, sang, ate, read and talked until we finally fell uncomfortably asleep in the straight-backed seats.
My idea that trains are romantic may come from the fact that my husband and I took the train on our honeymoon, spending extra money to eat in the dining car, and looking out of the window as the desert scenery slid past.
Now, when I make a trip, I always fly or drive, and trains are not a very important part of my life. Still, every time I hear the train whistle far away on a quiet night, I can always feel the impulse in my heart to pack my bags and jump on board, entering a unique world of motions, sounds, sights and experiences which just aren't matched in the dull environment of an airplane.
    12. Why did the author feel a little disappointed during the first train trip?
    A. Because the train was loud and violent. B. Because she finally became a passenger.
    C. Because she had a high expectation. D. Because she missed his parents.
    13. It can be inferred from the passage that.
    A. the author's childhood memory of trains was frightening and disappointing
    B. the author no longer makes a trip by train now as a result of its dull environment
    C. the author didn't fall asleep until she found straight-backed seats with her roommate
    D. the author thought trains romantic mainly because of the pleasant moment with her husband
    14. Which word best describes the author's feelings when she hears the train whistle now?
    A. Eager. B. Embarrassed. C. Romantic. D. Disappointed.
    15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. My Love of Trains B. Watching Trains Coming
    C. My Memory of Trips D. Trains: My Best Choice
C 13. D 14. A 15. A
根据第三段“However, because I had expected so much, I was a little disappointed when I was finally one of the passengers I had watched for so long.”
根据倒数第二段“My idea that trains are romantic may come from the fact that my husband and I took the train on our honeymoon, spending extra money to eat in the dining car, and looking out of the window as the desert scenery slid past.”
根据最后一段“Still, every time I hear the train whistle far away on a quiet night, I can always feel the impulse in my heart to pack my bags”可知,每当我在安静的夜晚听到火车远处的汽笛声,我总能感受到心中的冲动。 故选A项。
故选A项。
Animals’ abilities are often used to describe people’s personality characteristic. ____16____ But is there any validity(正确性)to such a statement? That’s the question we’re talking here at Short Wave as part of a series called Animal Slander(诽谤).
We’re starting with the phrases “blind as a bat” and “memory of a goldfish” because they are problematic. For one, the phrases are often used in a derogatory(贬义的)manner and it is not cool to make fun of people based on their physical or mental abilities. ____17____
    1. Blind as a bat.
People in the U.S. use the phrase “blind as a bat” to laugh at someone for not being able to see well. ____18____ In fact, there are over 1,300 species of bats and none is truly blind.
Different species of bats rely on their eyesight to varying degrees—often in combination with their sense of smell and echolocation(回声定位法). ____19____ They just need their eyes to figure out where they are. And some bats are able to see even better than this. For example, most fruit bats don’t use echolocation at all. They have big eyes that allow them to primarily rely on vision and sense of smell to find fruit.
    2. Memory of a goldfish? Maybe you’re not so forgetful after all.
The phrase is that a goldfish’s memory lasts about three seconds. This has been repeatedly proven wrong. Ryan Wong, a professor of biology helped us out with this one. “There are definitely lots of different studies can show that fish have really complex learning abilities and also have the ability to remember information for long periods of time,” Wong says. “____20____”
    A. However, the phrase is not right at all.
    B. Some bats rely heavily on echolocation.
    C. And second, the phrases aren’t even true.
    D. The goldfishes’ memory can even last for weeks.
    E. He researches fish behavior, learning and memory.
    F. For instance, if you’re stubborn, you might be called “pig-headed”.
    G. Some bats don’t need their eyes to look up close.
F 17. C 18. A 19. G 20. D
上文“Animals’ abilities are often used to describe people’s personality characteristic.”(动物的能力经常被用来表述人的性格特征)说明人们会用一些动物的能力来描述人,选项F中举例说如果你很顽固,可能会被说成猪头。
上文“For one, the phrases are often used in a derogatory(贬义的)manner and it is not cool to make fun of people based on their physical or mental abilities.”(其一,这些短语经常会以贬低的方式使用,来取笑人们的身体或精神能力)说明这是其中之一的说法。
根据上文“People in the U.S. use the phrase “blind as a bat” to laugh at someone for not being able to see well.”(美国人会用blind as a bat来笑话一个视力不好的人)以及下文“In fact, there are over 1,300 species of bats and none is truly blind.”(事实上,有1300多种蝙蝠并不是真正的看不见。) 故选A。
根据上文“Different species of bats rely on their eyesight to varying degrees—often in combination with their sense of smell and echolocation.”(不同的蝙蝠会依赖他们的视力来改变角度——经常会把感官和回声定位法相结合)以及下文“They just need their eyes to figure out where they are.”(他们只需用视力来知道自己在哪)可知,蝙蝠并不需要用眼睛来近距离观察。故选G。
上文“There are definitely lots of different studies can show that fish have really complex learning abilities and also have the ability to remember information for long periods of time.”(不同的研究表明鱼有着极其复杂的学习能力,来长时间的记忆信息)说明鱼的记忆并不是几秒钟,而是长时间的。

be thankful for为固定结构,含义为:对……

One possible version:
Nowadays, more and more youngsters hope to become an internet celebrity by making short-form mobile videos. Last Friday our English club had a debate on the topic. Opinions fell mainly into two groups.
Some students in favour of the idea thought youngsters could show their talents by making the videos. Besides, they believed it could help them gain more confidence.
On the contrary, others were against it. They argued that it may lead the youth to be addicted to the Internet. What’s worse, some young people might feel that success could come from luck but not hard work.
Personally, I’m in favour of the first view. As long as we use the Internet properly, its advantages outweigh its disadvantage.
    赞成:in favour of →be for
    此外:besides → what’s more
    反对:be against →be opposed to
Personally → In one’s opinion
Nowadays, more and more youngsters hope to become an internet celebrity by making short-form mobile videos.
Nowadays, more and more youngsters hope that they will become an internet celebrity by making short-form mobile videos.
1】They argued that it may lead the youth to be addicted to the Internet.(运用了that引导的宾语从句)
2】As long as we use the Internet properly, its advantages outweigh its disadvantage.(运用了as long as引导的条件状语从句)
