She is an international sand artist and has just carved the largest sand sculpture park in the world. The park is located at a place called Almeerderzand. For two years, Almeerderzand has been hosting a sand-sculpting festival and Marion’s sculptures are part of this festival.    It took Marjon more than just buckets and spades() to build these sculptures. It took her a lot of effort. And about half a million dollars.    At first, she planned out what she was to do and the sculptures they would make. Then she had to find sand. Lots and lots of it. But not any sand. To make sculptures that last, she needed special sand—young river sand, sand that has been created recently. Its grains are almost like squares.    Fourteen hundred lorries were hired to bring the sand to the site. Following this, Marjon’s team got to work. All of the sand was dumped in huge mounds(), some of which were 46 feet high. The artists had to go to the top of these mounds and begin their work of carving the shapeless mass into beautiful sculptures.    Most of the artists are architects or sculptors. They all have regular jobs. These artists were drawn to this job by a specific love for sand, the simplest of all building materials. “The beauty of sand is that it’s so flexible,” says Marjon. “You can do pretty much any kind of sculpture with it.”    Still, it was not as easy as it sounds. They had to deal with something they didn’t expect—rain. Once Marjon’s sculptures were all ruined after it rained for two weeks continuously. But they didn’t give up. As soon as the weather was fine, they resumed work and completed the project. More than 200,000 people are expected to visit the park to see their work.4What is essential in making sand sculptures?A. Creativity. B. Encouragement.  C. Bravery. D. Dependence.5What matters as to the sand Marjon used?A. Its water content. B. Its color. C. Its age. D. Its weight.6Why does Marjon like sand?A. It is very clean.  B. It is easy to shape.C. It looks really beautiful.  D. It is environmentally friendly.7What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Sand Art Is Taking off B. Castles That Are Made of SandC. A Sand-Sculpting Festival Welcomes You D. A Woman Who Builds Sand Castles    Plenty of people use portable devices while on the toilet. There’s a good chance, in fact, that you’re reading this article on the toilet.    Incredibly, a few surveys have been conducted on the subject. In one conducted earlier this year, 65 percent of respondents said they used their phones in the bathroom.    But is it healthy to sit on the toilet with a phone?    “I see a lot of people who get food poisoning or catch different things by not having good habits in the bathroom,” Raj, a famous physician, said. If you’re playing video games or using your phone on the toilet, you’re probably touching a lot of things you might not want on your device.    If you’ re staying within healthy time limits and—crucially—always maintaining good personal hygiene, your behaviour probably doesn’t need to change. But if you’d like to make a change, there are some simple ways to go about it.    “There’s nothing wrong with taking your phone to the bathroom for a few minutes and doing your business and then coming out,” Eyal, an expert, said. “But if you said, ‘Oh, I had planned to be with my kids, but now I stayed in the bathroom for 30 minutes scrolling on TikTok,’ well, now you’ re distracted(分心). So that’s the best piece of advice: to know what you wanted to do with your time so that you have a priority(优先权) to spend your time doing that thing, rather than wasting it in the bathroom.”    It’s also important to remember: phones and other mobile devices aren’t bad. If you are always losing track of time, consider whether you’re attuned(协调的) to bigger stressors in your life.    “90% of the time that we get distracted by our phones is because of what’s happening inside of us,” Eyal said, “such as boredom, loneliness, uncertainty, stress, anxiety, which often make us want to escape from our present reality. If we don’t know how to deal with that in a healthy manner, I think we will always find a distraction.”8What is Raj’s attitude towards sitting on the toilet with a phone?A. Supportive.  B. Uncaring. C. Disapproving. D. Tolerant.9What is Eyal’s suggestion?A. Saying no to TikTok. B. Spending more time with children.C. Using phones to handle important things.D. Giving priority to what you plan to do.10What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?A. The harmful feeling.  B. The disturbed time.C. Present reality.  D. Annoying distraction.11Where does this text probably come from?A. A guidebook.  B. A newspaper.C. A book review.  D. An advertisement.    Female cichlids are mouthbrooding(口育) fish, which carry their young in their mouths first as eggs and then as hatchlings. But in a study published in the journal Biology Letters, the scientists reported that in some instances, cichlid mothers swallow some of their young.    Dijkstra and his coworkers first suspected that something was wrong with their cichlid mothers when they noticed that some of the eggs in one female cichlid’ s mouth were missing because the fish can hold up to 100 eggs at once, but in this case, the female was carrying only 25 eggs.    “We realized that one of the mothers wasn’t holding all of her young,” Dijkstra said. “We figured that she probably ate them. There’s quite a bit of literature out there about this phenomenon. It’s very common in a lot of animal species.”    But why would a mother chow down on her babies? The researchers said it likely is because females become desperate for nutrients while they’re mouthbrooding.    Mouthbrooding also can be a high-stress time for female cichlids, and a prior study of A. burtoni, published in 2020, found that high-stress environments can lead mouthbrooding females to this behavior. In the new study, the authors discovered that some mouthbrooding mothers showed signs of liver damage, with levels of DNA damage that were 24% higher than in non-brooding females.    Horrible as it may sound, this behavior of female cichlids is actually a beneficial strategy for reproduction.    “As a parent, you don’t want to spend all of your energy on one child, and this is also tree for humans,” Dijkstra said. “You want to make sure that in the future maybe you will have more children and you still want to be in good enough shape to take care of your existing children as well.”It’s not only cichlids that exhibit this baby-swallowing behavior. Many different types of animals engage in this phenomenon, including many fish species, birds, insects, spiders and even some large animals.12What raised the researchers’ doubt?A. The disappearance of some cichlid mothers.B. The sickness of some female cichlids.C. The decreasing egg number in a female cichlid’s mouths.D. The sight of some fish eggs floating in the water.13What does the underlined part “chow down on” in paragraph 4 probably mean?A. Hatch. B. Eat. C. Protect. D. Reject.14What is the purpose of paragraph 5?A. To put forward a new discovery.B. To prove the accuracy of this study result.C. To explain the reason for female cichlids’ behavior.D. To show mouthbrooding can cause DNA damage.15Which statement might Dijkstra agree with?A. Cichlids know how to select quality eggs.B. Female cichlids have too much energy.C. Cichlids are extremely fierce fish.D. Female cichlids’ behavior is understandable.二、七选五16    Do you know that one of the main causes of some aches and pains is lack of sleep?
