The Polo at PalermoBAs children we are well-trained to find the right answer. We are rewarded for A's, the honorroll and acing the test. Our education trains us to follow the rules and deliver the expected answers. When we do, awards and congratulations follow. Yet when we grow up, it gets a little harder. Life and careers dont have tests with an A if we get the “right” answer.I recently had coffee with a college student who will graduate. She is struggling with whatshe wants for her career. She wants her parents to be proud of her and to continue the success she has had in school. She also talked about other students in her graduating class who are set to do "some big things," like working for impressive companies. Yet she wasn't sure of the right answer for using her degree. She said that deep down she was hoping that someone might give her the answer. We both agreed that it comes down to not looking for the right answer, but her answer. Thegrown-up definition of the right answer is different than that in school. What would you do if you weren't afraid? It takes time to know these answers. And they can change over time and at any point in your career. My encouragement is to get valued advice and input, of course, but finally to look within yourself for the answers. It helps to come back to:What do I want to be known for? What is my definition of success? What am I best at? If Ihad no fears, what would I do? What is one step I can take today to move me toward my goal (even if it's not perfectly clear)?I find these types of questions are more helpful at getting to our unique answer rather thanright answer questions, such as: What will my parents want? What degree or job will mark me as accomplished to the world? What is my best option based on where I work today?24. What does the author mean to say in the first paragraph?Life is harder for adults than children.Academic excellence is not necessary. It is not helpful to follow the rules in school.Rules in life are different from those in school.25. What is wrong with the college student? She does badly in her studies. Her parents are not proud of her.3 页 共 8

Which of the following questions might not help you to seek your answer? What do I love to do?What matters most to me in life? What will make me look successful? What will I regret not doing when I'm 80?CNew research has shown that a fungus(真菌) skin could provide a new alternative to some plastics used in computer chips(芯片), making them easier to recycle. The researchers were working on new materials to replace plastics, when they made the discovery. At the time, a member of the team had been looking at using fungus materials for use in otherareas. This work led to the latest study, which shows how Ganoderma lucidum(灵芝) skin could work as an alternative. The team discovered that Ganoderma lucidum, which grows on rotten hardwood trees, formsa skin to protect its growth medium (the wood). It does so in order to protect itself, Kaltenbrunner, one of the researchers, said, explaining that the team were able to get this protection by removing the skin and drying it. The skin is slightly less insulating(绝缘的) than plastics, but it still works safely and successfully, with a thickness similar to paper and the ability to stand temperatures over 200℃.The skin has many qualities that make it different from other materials. Kaltenbrunner said,“But most importantly, it can grow in waste wood and does not need too much energy. The skin is very proper because it can last a long time if kept dry, but in just a standard family compost, it would break down entirely within two weeks or less,” he added. While the teams work is experimental and a long way from being brought into use, theybelieve the skin could be a new alternative material for use in electronics. There are large amounts of waste wood,” Kaltenbrunner said, “which is a lot of food for Ganoderma lucidum.”28. What is an advantage of the fungus skin?A. It is thicker than plastics. B. It can stand low temperatures.C. It is environmentally friendly. D. It can keep wet for a long time.29. What is the researchers’ attitude to the future of the fungus skin?A. Uncertain. B. Unfriendly. Have you ever read back something youve written and felt like its not quite as strong as youd like? One possible reason is that you overuse crutch words(拐杖词). So, what are crutch words?Crutch words are words a speaker or a writer uses without knowing it. They are usually notneeded and dont add to the story. If someone is speaking, youll recognize a crutch word as a pause, or if the speaker uses um or ah a lot. Crutch words in the conversation also include favorite words and phrases, such as “you know”, “anyway”, “just”, “all right and “like”. They only give the speaker time to think before they move on to the next idea. For writers, crutch words operate in much the same way, but instead of a pause, they’re fillerwords we use because we haven’t thought the sentence through enough. They’re words that areeasy. They flow naturally into the space that could easily be occupied by a slight rewriting of a sentence or a different word choice. Now that you know what crutch words are, the question is how you can get rid of them. Itsnot always easy to notice your own writing quirks(怪癖), so it might take a bit of hard work to find what yours are.The next time you sit down to read over your writing, look carefully for repeated words orphrases. Mark them so theyre easy to find later. Look at both an old and a new piece of writing and compare the two. Are there phrases or words you use a lot that are common to both? If yes, then you’ve found your crutch words.Once you’ve known your crutch words, they’re easy to cut out later. But don’t be afraid ifyou find them in your first draft. Eliminating those words is exactly what revision is for.32.  What might an article with too many crutch words be like?A. Formal. B. Weak. C. Quality. D. Easy.33.  Which statement will the author probably agree with?Crutch words are normally unnecessary.Crutch words are unavoidable.Crutch words give writers time to think.Crutch words give writers different word choices.34.  What does the author think about finding crutch words? Its interesting. A. Its strange.C. Its questionable. D. Its a bit difficult.35.  What does the underlined word “Eliminating” in the last paragraph mean?A. Returning. B. Removing.C. Recording. D. 38 Some universities have banned it due to the warning that it could prompt morestudents to cheat, especially in exams. 39 Andreas Schleicher, director of education andskills of the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development, for instance, said he welcomes ChatGPT because it gives people a chance to concentrate less on tasks that technology can perform equally well.According to a survey covering more than 100 educators and over 1,000 students, one-thirdof the educators said they believe ChatGPT should be banned in schools and universities, while the rest supported students having access to it. The attitude of most students sees a distinctdifference. 40As a result, the observed value and usefulness of ChatGPT seem to outweigh the risks. When David passed them, he heard the woman yelling: How stupid you are! Youre good at nothing. David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs. Brown in middle school. After he enteredmiddle school David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed. But one day it all changed. That day, in an English writing class, Mrs. Brown asked them toread a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didnt give it much thought. But the next day to his surprise, the comment well done from Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He had never expected to be praised. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.That day after he returned home, he wrote another short story and gave it to Mrs. Brown thenext morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs. Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs. Brown always gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future. He succeeded in entering college and kept writing.
