The African penguin lives on St. Croix island off the east coast of South Africa. A new study has found that they are leaving their natural environment to escape noisy ship refueling (补给燃料)activities.

The African penguins once mainly raised babies on this island. But the population has dropped sharply since South Africa started permitting ships in the area to refuel at sea six years ago, the study found.

Lorien Pichegru is acting director of the Coastal and Marine Research Institute at Nelson Mandela University, which led the study. She said the organization had found that noise levels in the area had doubled since the refueling activities began. Scientists say high noise levels affect the ability of penguins to find and catch other animals for food. Noise also makes it more difficult for them to communicate with each other and map travel paths. “This year we are at 1, 200 breeding pairs at St Croix from 8, 500 pairs in 2016, ”Pichegru said.

The study recently appeared in the publication Science of the Total Environment. The researchers said the study is the first to explore the effects of ocean traffic noise pollution on a seabird.

Nelson Mandela University's study collected some data to estimate underwater noise from passing ships. Oil-covered penguins were found in 2019 in Algoa Bay after an oil spill from ship-to-ship refueling. Environmental groups have called for the activities to be banned in the bay.

Pichegru said penguins in the area were already struggling to survive because of a series of issues, including industrial fishing activities. She added that the refueling activities did not kill all the penguins. However, "It was just the thing that made the whole ecology tip over and then the penguins couldn't cope with that, " she said.

    28. What has the new study found about penguins ?

    A. They have difficulty in raising babies.

    B. They can get used to noisy ships easily.

    C. Their population is on the increase.

    D. They are forced to leave the natural environment.

    29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A. The value of Lorien Pichegru's job.

    B. The importance of ship refueling activities.

    C. The ability of Penguins to find food.

    D. Bad effects of noises on Penguins.

    30. What might Pichegru agree with ?

    A. The penguins should be put in control.

    B. Fishing activities should be greatly encouraged.

    C. Refueling activities should be strictly managed.

    D. The penguins should develop their survival abilities.

    31. Where is this text most likely from ____________.

    A. A diary.    B. A guidebook.   C. A textbook.   D. A magazine.

    D

“Red tourism”, a new form of tourism in which people visit locations and memorials(纪念碑)of historical significance to the Communist Party of China, has given a much-needed shot in the arm of the domestic(国内的)tourism industry in summer. And red tourism will be more popular during the National Day Golden Week holiday.

Ticket bookings for red tourism sites in June increased by five times with local and short trips to red tourism sites being the choice of about 88 percent of such tourists. And the search for the term “red tourism” on Mafengwo, a Chinese travel service and social-networking platform, increased by 300 percent during the summer holidays.

Red tourism is not only about the joy of visiting a new place and taking in the wonderful sights. It is also about gaining knowledge about history and being inspired by the stories of the people who gave their lives to the founding of the People's Republic in 1949 and worked for the wellbeing of the Chinese people. By rediscovering history and passing on the stories of the Chinese revolution and its heroes to the next generations, people can uplift their spirit.

Red tourism can also be used as an opportunity to develop rural (农村的) areas because most of the revolutionary bases and red tourism sites are in the countryside. It can raise the incomes of local people. Since red tourism creates jobs and helps increase farmers' incomes, it can develop local development.

Data show that in the first half of 2022, more than 30 percent of all tourists visited red tourism sites in rural areas, which was 10 percent more than the last year. Yet red tourism faces certain developmental problems, mainly because some local government officials have failed to make the best use of red tourism resources for local development.

    32. What can we know about red tourism?

    A. It has brought life to tourism.

    B. It is not popular with the young.

    C. It is a traditional form of tourism.

    D. It is about visiting beautiful scenery.

    33. Why does the author list the numbers in paragraph 2?

    A. To describe a scene.    B. To prove his idea.

    C. To illustrate the story.   D. To introduce a platform.

    34. What is the benefit of red tourism for rural areas?

    A. It can help improve farming facilities.

    B. Local people can make more money.

    C. It can offer job opportunities to visitors.

    D. Local people can receive much help from society.

    35. What will be mentioned in the following paragraphs?

    A. More and more people will choose red tourism.

    B. Many travel companies will benefit from red tourism.

    C. Some measures should be taken to solve problems.

    D. More red tourism sites should be open to the public.

Today, the term “tree hugger” describes a person who is an environmentalist. 37_____________ For example, someone who wants to save a rare butterfly species or cut greenhouse gases could also be described as a tree hugger.

However, calling someone a “tree hugger” is not always seen as a praise. 38________ "Tree hugger" described someone who was overly concerned about protecting trees, animals and other parts of the natural world.

Some tree huggers do go to extremes to protect trees. Take, for example, an American woman named Julia Lorraine Hill. Luna is huge, measuring nearly 61 meters tall and about 12 meters across, which has stood in Humboldt County for more than 1, 000 years. 39 _________ So, Hill did what any extreme tree hugger would - she moved in! As the website explains, Hill's main goal was “to bring international attention to the importance of protecting and restoring natural resources. ”So, we can safely call Hill a tree hugger. 40_________

    A. Trees give so much to the world.

    B. Human beings should all protect trees.

    Text 1 最喜欢的水果

W: Adam, what kind of fruit do you want? There are apples, pears and oranges in the kitchen.

M: The last, please. They are my favorite fruit.

    W: OK. A moment, please.

    Text 2 咨询作业

    M: Hello, is Olivia in?

W: Sorry, I’m afraid she is not in. She’s gone to Kate’s birthday party.

M: Oh, no. Well, I’ll call someone else about the math homework.

    Text 3 举行会议

    M: Has everybody arrived?

W: No. Mark is sick today. He’s in hospital now.

M: Then let’s get started without him. First, let’s go over this week’s work.

    Text 4 日常生活

W: Carl, are you going out this afternoon?

M: Yes. I’m going to a concert with a friend.

W: You’d better take an umbrella. It’s clear now. But the weatherman said it’d rain cats and dogs.

    Text 5 城市交通

W: Why are there always so many vehicles in the city?

M: Yeah. We often get stuck in traffic jams when we go out. I really hope measures will be taken to improve the situation.

    W: Me too.

    Text 6 个人情况

M: Hello, Cindy. Are you an English?

W: No, I’m not. My parents are from Poland, but they got married in Germany and have worked there ever since. So I grew up there.

M: Why did you come to Beijing?

W: I always wanted to go to study abroad. I considered going to America or China, and I finally chose China because I was really interested in Chinese culture.

M: How long have you been in this city?

W: For almost 10 months. I’m really enjoying my time here.

    Text 7 兴趣成就梦想

W: Clark, when did you first take a flight?

M: It was 12years ago. I was just ten years old then.

    W: Where did you go?

M: I went to New Zealand on holiday with my family. It was a long flight, but I enjoyed it very much.

    W: You must be excited.

M: You said it. I was really interested in planes. It was my dream to take a flight then. The trip made my dream come true.

W: So do you dream of becoming a pilot one day?

M: Yes. As a matter of fact, I’m going to New Zealand in September to receive some training for that.

    Text 8 谈论一本书

    W: What are you doing?

M: I’m reading a book titled Cezanne’s Parrot. It’s written by Amy Guglielmo.

W: What is the book about?

M: It’s about an artist named Cezanne. He works slowly and is different from other artists of his day. Yet he doesn’t give up doing art in his own way.

W: Why is the book named Cezanne’s Parrot?

M: That’s because there’s a parrot in the story. Cezanne tries to get his parrot to say “Cezanne is a great painter. ” And finally, people see his artwork and say, “Cezanne is a great painter. ”

W: Did Amy Guglielmo draw the pictures in the book, too?

M: No. The pictures were drawn by Brett Helquist.

    W: Is it interesting?

M: Of course. I think everyone who has a dream should read it. Before I read it, I even thought about giving up my dream of becoming an artist. But now I know I should keep doing art.

    Text 9 暑假计划

M: Jennifer, what’s your plan for the school summer vacation?

W: My grandparents really miss me. They want me to spend one or two weeks with them in the country this summer. So I’ll go to visit them first. After I return, I think I’ll do some volunteer work.

M: Will you consider volunteering for a program in Kathmandu, Nepal?

W: No. I can’t afford a trip abroad. What about you?

M: That’s my plan for this summer.

W: What will you do in this program?

M: Well, it aims to provide quality education to some of Nepal’s children. Volunteers will work alongside local teachers to help with subjects such as English, math, science, history, and geography.

W: So what subjects are you most interested in teaching?

    M: Geography.

W: When will you begin to work there?

M: On July 10th. And I’ll volunteer for two whole weeks there. After that, I’ll do some traveling around the country.

W: Well, I wish you a great time there!

    Text 10 电话留言

M: Hi, Ella. This is Henry. Since you’re not at home today, I’ll just leave you a message. Last week you told me you were looking for a babysitting job. I have some good news for you. The couple Mr. and Mrs. Smith living near my house are looking for a babysitter now. They’re both cooks and they have to work at night. Neither of them can take care of their one-year-old baby girl. She’s really lovely. I’m sure you’ll love the little girl. If you do the work, you only need to take care of her and play with her from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Since you’ve looked after babies before, I’m sure you can do the job well. The couple say they can pay 20 dollars an hour. If you’re interested in it, please call me back. I’ll introduce you to them. Believe me, they are very easy to get along with. I’m sure you’ll like the family. That’s all. Bye.
