NEW DELHI---Acupuncture(针灸) has become a bridge of friendship between
India and China, with more Indians accepting the form of traditional Chinese medicine
over the past few decades, experts say.
Acupuncture, a technique to cure various illnesses, was introduced in India in 1959
by B.K. Basu in the eastern city of Kolkata, capital of West Bengal state, according to
Mrigendranath Gantait, president of the Acupuncture Association of India. Over the past
six decades, it has spread to rural, semi -urban and urban areas in India, particularly in
the states of West Bengal, Maharashtra and Punjab.
Acupuncture therapy in India is related to the story of the Indian medical mission
that was sent to China to provide medical assistance during the Chinese people’s War of
Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-1945). Basu, as a colleague of
Dwarkanath Kotnis (widely known as Ke Dihua in China) and a torchbearer of the
Indian medical mission, stayed in China from 1938 to 1943,and later worked for 43
years in India until his death in 1986. From 1958 to 1959, Basu stayed in China to learn
acupuncture before introducing the needle techniques in India. In 1973, Basu was
invited to China to learn newly developed acupuncture anesthesia (麻醉).
From the very beginning, Basu tried to spread acupuncture to doctors by free
teaching to broad masses of people. Basu, who established the Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis
Memorial Committee and the Acupuncture Association of India, donated his house and
savings to the government of West Bengal state for the purpose of acup uncture
development.
Under the leadership of the committee, free health service clinics have been set up
where acupuncture is taken as the main treatment modality (模式), because the cost of
acupuncture treatment is low, and acupuncture is effective for many ailments(小病). The
committee has also produced many acupuncturists who run these clinics without taking
any remuneration (报酬), according to Gantait.
“Acupuncture has played a unique role to promote people’s friendship between
India and China,” he says. “When Basu returned to India after learning acupuncture
anesthesia, the Indian media described it as acupuncture diplomacy, and it was highly
praised in the country.”
24.According to the passage, which of the following is true about acupuncture therapy
in India?
A. It was developed by B.K. Basu, a great doctor.

C. It has played a unique role in producing acupuncturists.

A. introduce Dr. Basu’s experience in China
B. explain why Dr. Basu learned acupuncture in China
C. give some background information about acupuncture therapy in India
D. show how India and China benefited each other in acupun cture therapy

In 1990, Hal Donaldson was 23 years old, fresh out of college and found himself
in Calcutta, India, where he was asked to interview Mother Teresa.
Donaldson says about the great woman famed for feeding the hungry, “She wasn’t
wearing shoes and her ankles were swollen. She sat down with me and was very polite.”
After the interview, Mother Teresa asked him, “What are you doing to help the poor?”
Donaldson admitted that he was young and wasn’t focused on helping others. With a
smile on her face, Mother Te re sa said, “Everyone can do something.”
Those words deeply struck Donaldson and forced him to face some hard truths
about himself.
Hal Donaldson grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. When he was 12 years old,
his parents were hit by a drunk driver; his father died, and his mother was seriously
injured. To make ends meet, they went on welfare. Donaldson says, “I had holes in my
shoes and clothes. When you're teased at school for that, you just want to escape.”
He managed to do just that. Donaldson got into college and turned his focus to
making money for himself. He says, “I was just trying to find my way out of
insignificance. However, it’s easy to overlook others along the wa y. I was the guy that
would see a homeless person and cross the street, so I didn’t have to confront him. My
focus was on climbing to the top instead of helping those trying to climb with me.”
Donaldson returned home from India with a differentthought. He traveled to eight
cities in America and stayed on the streets and listened to stories of the homeless. “My
heart broke,” he says, “I knew I could no longer just live for myself.”
Inspired by Mother Teresa’s words and the stories he’d heard across America,
Donaldson loaded a pick - up truck with $300 worth of groceries and handed them out
to anyone who needed help. In 1994, Donaldson created the nonprofit organization,
Convoy for Hope, which works with communities across America and around the world.
Their work focuses on feeding children, women’s empowerment ( 权力), helping
farmers and disaster services.

A team of researchers from several institutions in the UK and one in Estonia has
created a type of buoy (浮标) that has proven to be effective at frightening seabirds ,
thus preventing them from getting caught in gillnets (刺网) — a type of vertical (垂直
的) fishing net that is made of a material that makes it nearly invisible underwater .
Every year, hundreds of thousands of seabirds die when they get caught in gillnets.
Some estimatessuggestthat up to a half - million birds are caught in them each year.
Over the years, researchers have created devices to prevent the birds from trying to catch
fish near or in gillnets, but those didn’t work well.
To find a way that would work for all seabirds, the researchers first studied seabirds
ina general sense, looking to find things that they would avoid. They noted that seabirds
avoided eye contact with other creatures. Then the researchers came up with a simple
idea — they put a small pole to a regular buoy and then attached a pair of googly eyes
(金鱼眼) to the top of it . They made the eyes big enough so that even birds with poor
eyesight, such as geese, would see them, Adding to the effectiveness of the device ,
waves made the eyes move back and forth , And the wind made the buoy spin very
slowly , making sure that birds from every direction would get a good look at the eyes .
To test their idea, the researchers selected several sitesnear gillnets and counted how
many birds approached and how many attempted to catch fish near the nets. They then
set up their googly - eyed buoys and once again counted birds. Over the course of 62
days, they found the number of birds that tried to catch fish near the gillnets dropped by
approximately 25% for a distance of up to 50 meters. They also found that the birds
were less likely to fish near where the buoys had been for up to three weeks after they
had been removed.

September 23rd marks the start of a new season. 36 In Great Britain, the third season of the year usually has only one name: autumn. But if you travel across the
Atlantic, you’ll find that people use both fall and autumn interchangeably when referring
to this time of year, making it the only season in the English language with two widely
accepted names. 37
According to Dictionary.com, fall isn’t a modern name that followed the more
traditional autumn. The two terms are actually first recorded within a few hundred years,
with the term fall being used even a bit earlier.
38 The word is of Germanic origin and meant “picking” or “collecting”, a
nod to the act of gathering and preserving crops in the field before winter. In the 1500s,
English speakers began referring to the season separating the hot and cold months as
either the fall of the leaf or the spring of the leaf, or fall and spring for short. 39

By the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word “automne” and the Latin
“autumnus”, had overtaken fall as the standard British term for the third season.
Around the same time England adopted autumn, the first-ever British American
colonists (殖民者) were voyaging to North America. 40 While the former fell
out of fashion overseas, it established itself in the local vocabulary by the time America
won its independence. Today, using both words to describe the season before winter is
still a unique American behavior.
A. With them they brought the words fall and autumn.
B. The Americans prefer using fall to using autumn.
C. However, what exactly you should call that season depends on where you are.
D. But for some reason, only spring had staying power in Britain.
E. It is time to gather apples, rice and other things for the farmers.
F. So what is it about the season that makes it so special?
G. Before either word appeared, the season between summer and winter was known as
harvest.

W: But you’re not in bed! Do you want me to tell a lie?
M: Oh, it’s only a very little one, dear. I’m not making a false excuse. I really have a bad headache.
W: Then put the cigarette out.
M: Well, dear. You’re quite right.
W: Look, here’s some boiling water. Do as I tell you now. I’ve put something in the water. That’ll do you a lot of good. Put your nose over the water. That’s right. Breathe in deeply.
M: It smells nice.
8. M: Betty, how was the concert last night?
W: It was fine. But I didn’t enjoy it because I had an argument with a person.
M: You? It’s unbelievable that you could have an argument with anybody. What happened?
W: It was a woman, with her son, about 6 years old. They sat behind me and talked all the way through the concert. It was so annoying.
M:So you argued with them?
W: No. I just told them not to talk and they nodded. But a minute later, they began talking again. The boy even kicked my seat. I felt quite uncomfortable so I turned my head and stared at them. Guess what? The woman said I should be nice to kids. Then we started to argue. What would you have done?
M: I wouldn’t have argued with her. I would have asked the security guard to remove her.
W: You’re right.
9. M: Hi, I’d like to have some information about the summer courses at Swan School.
W: Certainly, Sir. We have two full-time summer courses. The first course begins on July 3 and lasts until July 20, and the second from July 24 till August 10.
M: What about the fees for each course?
W: The former course costs £500, and the latter costs £50 higher.
M: I see. Do we have to find our own accommodation?
W: No, we have a lady who arranges the accommodation for you with Oxford families here.
M: Good, how much does it cost?
W:£140 a week.
M: OK. I’d like to choose the second course, please.
W: Sure, Sir. Can I have your name and nationality, please?
M: Dominick Dobuwa. DO-B-U-W-A. I’m from France.
W:OK, Mr. Dobuwa, you choose the second course from July 24 to August 10. Please pay before July 15 through our official website.
M: OK, I’m looking forward to going to your school in person.
10. W: Study the faces of the subway riders, and you’ll see what it means to live in a city. They are all traveling in a busy world that exists under another busy world. The New York subway is one of the oldest public transportation systems in the world. It has been underneath this city for 110 years now, and I’ve been riding it for half that time. When I was a kid, there wasn’t any fear, only adventure. I would stand at the window of the front car and dream through the great network of tunnels, watching the red and green lights go by. A subway is like a secret, a child’s game. You go in one hole and you come out another. You move fast, much faster than a taxi, or walking or running. Years ago, a woman named Rosie Ruiz tried to steal a victory in the New York marathon by taking a subway to the finish line. Rosie was right. The subway was faster. I think what people like most about the subway, apart from the basic transportation, still comes from the magic feeling of rushing around fast in a train underground.
