As a boy growing up in Minneapolis during the 1970s, Russell King knew he wasn't into the things most other boys liked. “I didn't really like sports, and I liked to play with girls,” King, now 57, said. King liked dolls (布娃娃) but he got the message early that because he was a boy, he wasn't supposed to. “I remember a time when I was playing with dolls, as a little boy about 6 years old, my father saw me, and he said, “Boys don't play with dolls.”
But in primary (初级的) school, King’s music teacher, Paige Macklin, inspired the reverse message.
Macklin made him sing the young boy part in the song “William's Doll" for a concert. It couldn't have been a more fitting song. “William's Doll' is a song about a boy wanting to play with a doll but everybody saying 'no'," King said. Suddenly, he didn't feel so alone. “I realized, ‘somebody else has these feelings. This isn't just me,’” King said.
King told his former teacher that he was grateful to her for what she inspired in him. She couldn't have guessed at the time that King's voice would lead him to the stage, where he performs cabaret in drag (一种身着异性服饰的艺术表演) as Miss Richfield. “As a teacher, you don’t know how you might have influenced students. And not in any way I would have expected that," Macklin, now 75, told King.
“You didn't expect the soloist (独唱者) to turn out to be a big drag character?” King said with a laugh. Singing that song allowed him to be comfortable with being himself, he said. “As that 6-year-old boy, I couldn't be a little kid I wanted to be. I wasn't supposed to like dresses and color, and all the things I liked. I couldn't really have a voice, and singing that song gave me a voice.
    21. What happened in King's childhood?
    A. His father didn't respect his hobbies.
    B. His father wanted him to play sports.
    C. He wasn't allowed to play with girl
    D. He had a great gift for singing.
    22. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “reverse” in Paragraph 2?
    A. unfair B. contrary C. right D. reliable
    23. What does the text try to tell us?
    A. Music plays an important role in a kid's life.
    B. A childhood doll may speak a lot about a kid.
    C. We should feel comfortable about being ourselves.
    D. Sticking to our hobbies will finally bring success.
    B
After my girlfriend, Liz, and I had dated for about a year, and a few years before we got married, she joined me, my parents and my sister's family on a ski (滑雪) trip in Stowe, Vermont. I was in my late 30s, it was the first family vacation I'd been on in years, and it was the first such holiday Liz had ever taken with my relatives.
But the ski vacation is only as good as the ski conditions, and that January was spring-like. To make matters worse, our rented cabin (a little wooden house) was close to the ski hills but far from anything else. There was no Internet, and the only entertainment was a few board games and a single television.
For a couple of days, while we waited for the snow to fall, we watched endless hours of CNN (mom's choice) and SpongeBob SquarePants (my six-year-old niece's), played Scrabble (一种拼字游戏) and drank. Cabin fever set in quickly. At one point, my mom actually fought my niece for the remote control, even sitting on her to wrest (抢夺) it from her hands. My brother-in-law was downing a bottle of port (sweet dark-red dessert wine originally from Portugal) and a bottle of white wine nightly. Amazed, but also somewhat terrified, Liz asked me in our bedroom: “What is wrong with your family?” I remember well her crazed laughter as she said it.
Then it snowed, but only at the top of the mountain. We climbed, drove to the lift, and took it up. But as we climbed higher into quiet, thick cloud, Liz began to look unusual. When I asked her what was wrong, she admitted that she had only ever been on a bunny hill (初学者滑雪道). When she said that, she took hold of my arm tightly. “A bunny hill!” The lift let us off at the top of a double-black-diamond ski run in the middle of a snowstorm.
My family, with not a look back at all, disappeared down the hill. Liz got off the lift, only just, and then, two falls later, took off her skis and rapidly got back on the lift, taking it back down to the lodge (a little house).
Did I say it was her first vacation with my family? It was also her last.
    24. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
    A. It was Liz’s first time to attended the family vacation.
    B. The ski conditions were very good when they arrived.
    C. Maybe it was a bit warm in that January.
    D. The author's mother was too cruel to his niece.
    25. What's the meaning of the sentence underlined in the third paragraph?
    A. Someone got a high fever in the cabin in no time.
    B. They felt bored and restless for staying indoors.
    C. They made the cabin warm enough.
    D. The life in the cabin was alive and interesting.
    26. Why did Liz look unusual when they climbed higher to go skiing?
    A. Because she was too excited to ski.
    B. Because the peak was too fearsome for her.
    C. Because the author's family didn't care for her.
    D. Because she felt nervous and frightened.
    27. What can we infer from the article?
    A. The author 's brother-in-law was fed up with the wine.
    B. Liz's skiing experience was limited.
    C. Liz went down to the hill without trying skiing.
    D. The author and Liz broke up after that vacation.
    C
Humans are no strangers to widespread viruses, and each time a vaccine (疫苗) is developed, it gives us hope for the future. Now, the world is waiting for a vaccine to fight COVID-19.
Scientists worldwide have been rolling up their sleeves (袖子) to work toward an effective novel coronavirus vaccine.
Under the going-together of the World Health Organization (WHO), up to 172 countries have been busy with the “largest and most various COVID-19 vaccine portfolio (文件夹)”, a program known as the COVAX Global Vaccines Facility.
COVAX is a system for joint purchasing (采购) and balancing the risks of multiple vaccines. When a vaccine proves to be safe and effective, all countries within the facility will be able to get it.
The plan is aimed to ensure that all countries, regardless of their economic position, can get the vaccine timely when one is available. It also makes sure that prices will be kept as low as possible.
“A number of vaccines are now in the final stage of clinical (临床的) trials,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesust on Aug 24, adding that the goal of COVAX is to deliver at least 2 billion doses (剂) of a vaccine by the end of 2021.
According to the WHO, at present, nine potential(有潜力的) vaccines are part of the portfolio.
To ensure the equal opportunities and fair giving-out of the vaccines, the WHO has said that the world needs to prevent vaccine nationalism — countries putting their own interests ahead of others in trying to secure supplies of a possible vaccine.
“Vaccine nationalism only helps the virus,” Tedros said, warning that it would lead to a lengthened pandemic (疫情) if only a small number of countries got most of the supply.
“Like an orchestra (管弦乐队), we need all instruments to be played in harmony (和谐) to create music that everyone enjoys,” he said.
Vaccine development looks promising, as several countries have made great progress. Russia began production of its first set of a COVID-19 vaccine on Aug 15. Four Chinese vaccine candidates (候选者) have started international stage-3 clinical trials.
    28. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
    A. Russia is the first country to have made progress.
    B. COVAX ensures all countries get the vaccine at the same time.
    C. WHO plays an important role in fighting COVID-19.
    D. Scientist have produced 2 billion doses of vaccines.

    29. What's the author's attitude towards vaccine nationalism?
    A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Optimistic. D. Understanding.
    30. Tedros compared fighting COVID- 19 to an orchestra to ______.
    A. show his deep love for music
    B. make the passage more interesting
    C. point out the similarities in between
    D. stress the importance of cooperation
    31. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. United for vaccine B. Vaccine on the way
    C. Fighting against COVID-19 D. Say goodbye to COVID-19
    D
You rush through a crowded railway station, tripping over bags, with your coffee flying out, only to have the doors slide shut in your face, leaving you breathless on the platform (站台) as the train pulls away.
But at least if you're in France, someone may be playing the piano for you. But it won't be performed by a paid musician, or even a street entertainer playing for coins. It will just be a unplanned passer-by, jamming for the fun of it on one of the pianos that the national railroad company, S. N. C. F., has fixed in nearly 100 stations across France. They are free for anyone to play, and travelers from all walks of life have taken to doing just that.
Gares & Connexions, the S. N. C. F. division that manages its stations, rents the instruments from the producer, Yamaha: which keeps them in good repair and adjusts their tunes (音调) every month or two. The first one was set up in the Gare Montparnasse in Paris in 2012.
The music, mixed with the sounds of shouting passengers, screaming trains and rolling suitcases, gives French stations a special soundscape. The amateur musicians have included Irish soccer fans and even babies. In 2014, Gares & Connexions and Yamaha organized a nationwide contest called Your Tum to Play, asking participants (参与者) to submit videos of themselves using one of the pianos. It drew nearly 900 entries.
Isn't the railroad company taking a big chance? Apparently not: “None of the instruments has been vandalized to this day, or even only damaged,” said Claire Foumon, a spokeswoman for Gares & Connexions. “They are shared and respected by all.”
So if you miss a train in Paris; Bordeaux or Marseille one day, perhaps someone will be playing a favorite piece that will ease your pain. Or perhaps you'll sit down and play your anger and displeasure away yourself.
    32. Why did Gares & Connexions fix pianos in railway stations?
    A. To advertise Yamaha's products.
    B. To make stations more attractive.
    C. To let travelers have a relaxing trip.
    D. To help street artists make a living.
    33. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
    A. The contest has proved a hit. B. The pianos are very popular.
    C. Railway stations are crowded. D. everyone can be an amateur musician.
    34. What does the underlined word “vandalized” in Paragraph 5probably mean?
    A. Selected carefully. B. Checked regularly.
    C. Reserved in advance. D. Destroyed on purpose.
    35. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. Miss a train yet catch a tune B. A soundscape in the memory
    C. The role of piano in French life D. An amazing train with a piano bar

Sometimes, writing humor stories can be the hardest type of stories to tell. You can become defeated with strong feelings from past events. You may wonder why readers care about your story more than anyone else's. 36
l Look for things that contradict (矛盾) each other.
This is one of the easiest ways to get yourself laughing about the things you come across in your life. 37 To do this, keep an eye out for things that seem strange occupying the same personality, place, set of rules, etc., and explore their relationship to each other. Expand upon what strikes you as strange about these details and why.
    l Find what sticks out.
38 Did you have a strong dislike? Did you feel out of place? Did something wear you out? Layer all of these details into your draft (草稿), paying special attention to what is unique or funny about each thing. Some special details work together in order to keep readers involved, rather than boring them.
    l 39
This is important, especially in situations that most people find anything but funny. This is a time when the advice “write what you know” fits best. There's no one you know better than yourself. Is there something that you were laughed about as a kid, or did something that caused you to feel shame happen to you in the office? Bring these moments into your writing. Anyone can relate to an embarrassing moment that's funny to look back on.
    l Look around.
Comedy is everywhere, and it's up to you to recognize it and translate it into something that others will find amusing. 40
    A. Try to find jokes from seemingly different details.
    B. The most important part of humor writing is seeing everything as material.
    C. There are some situations where jokes play a vital role.
    D. Here are some tips for finding those jokes to sprinkle (喷洒) throughout your tale.
    E. Think about how a certain situation made you feel.
    F. Laugh at yourself.
    G. Laugh at most people.

    第二节 第二节概要写作(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One evening, it was raining heavily. An old lady was sitting inside her car, stuck in the middle of the road. It was clear that she needed help badly. A poorly dressed man went near her car. He was hesitating (犹豫) to speak to her but still approached.
The lady pulled down the glass of the driver's seat. She looked worried. She tried to wear a smile seeing a needy man approaching her.
The man opened his mouth, “Hello Ma’am, can I help you?" The lady looked puzzled and said, “Yes.” “Please wait inside your car and let me see if I can solve the problem. By the way, I am Thomas Anderson,” Thomas said.
Thomas discovered that she got a flat tire (车胎漏气). Soon he went to fix the problem. After he finished, the lady began to talk to him.
She said, “I really don't have enough words to thank you. How much should I pay you?” She was actually ready to reward him for his kindness.
Thomas was surprised. He had never expected any reward from her, though his family needed money badly for their baby was going to be born the very next month.
He told her, “That's so nice of you, Ma'am. But if you really want to pay me back, the next time you see someone who needs help, please think of me and help that person. I hope this chain of love will not end with you.” He smiled and went away before the lady could further say anything.
The lady was so astonished. Anyone who saw the ragged (穿着破烂的) man would think how much he needed help. But he just told her something that she never thought of.
On her way, she found a small cafe down the road. She wanted to have a cup of warm coffee. As the lady went inside, a waitress came up to her with a very clean towel so that she could wipe her hair. The lady observed that the waitress, who was all smiles to her, was heavily pregnant (怀孕的). She looked like she needed rest but she tried not to show any sign of tiredness.

    Dear fellow students,
Some students are usually seen wasting food. I am writing to call on everyone to move against wasting food and take active part in saving food.
Food is of vital significance. It is not easy for farmers to produce it, and we should value every grain of it. Besides, the COVID-19 is still here and we shouldn't be too optimistic about our food supply.
And this is what we can do: When eating at the school, buy no more than you can have. When eating out, take your leftovers back home.
I am convinced that, with our joint efforts, the happening of wasting food will disappear.

When the waitress came back with the change, the lady was gone. The waitress looked for her outside the cafe but the lady and her car were out of sight. Confused, she came back. While she was about to clean the table, she found a note written on the napkin. The note read, “Someone helped me out just the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, please don't let this chain of love end with you.”
The waitress found that below the napkin there were 500 dollars. She wondered how the lady knew how much this money meant to her, with the baby to be born the very next month. She took the money and went back home. While having dinner, she shared the story of the kind lady with her husband, Thomas Anderson. Both of them realized that it was Thomas' kindness that was rewarded in a special way.

    Text 1
W: I'm not going to school. I feel sick and tired today.
M: You're not sick. You are just afraid of presenting your book report. Stop worrying. When you read it to me last night, it was really good. You will get a good grade on it.
    Text 2
M: Hey, Naomi. Do you need me to come pick you up and take you to the party tonight?
W: No, I have a car. I just have to wait for my mom and dad to come home, because I can't leave my little sister home alone.
    Text 3
M: This matches that suit I have at home, doesn't it? I don't know how to tie it, though.
W: Don't worry, I do. My dad taught me how to do it when I was little.
    Text 4
W: Wow, this smells good. I never knew you were so helpful in the kitchen. Can I have some?
M: Sure, but it's not ready yet. Why don't you get the dishes ready and put the tablecloth on the table?
    Text 5
M: You should read this. It's one of my favorite books of all time. I recommend it to all my friends who like to read.
W: Actually, I've always wanted to read that. But I can never finish books that thick. It looks like a dictionary.
    Text 6
M: What is that awful noise? It sounds like a bunch of people are running around up there.
W: I know. I was talking to the people in the apartment next door, and they said they could hear it too.
M: Turn up the television. I can't hear the movie.
W: I can't turn it up any louder.
M: What are they doing up there, anyway? This has been going on all day.
W: Apparently, they’re putting in new floors. They'll be done soon; don’t worry.
M: I have an idea. Let's go out and see a movie.
    W: You're right. I can't take this anymore.
    Text 7
M: You're so jumpy and anxious. What's wrong?
    W: Every time I hear a baby cry, I think it's Annie.
M: But she is fast asleep in her baby bed.
    W: I know...
M: Anyway, I didn't hear any noises. Did you?
W: Yes! It must have come from outside on the street. It scared me. I'm a mother of four, so even when I hear someone say“Mommy”, I turn around to respond.
M: You need a vacation, dear.
W: That's nice of you to say so, but I have my hands full right now. Between Allie's soccer practices and David's music lessons, we really don't have any time to take off.
M: Hey, don't look so sad! I promise we'll go somewhere for a couple of weeks when school ends. We can even invite your mother, too. She loves taking care of the children, and she loves to travel.
    Text 8
W: I can't believe I forgot to pick up soap again! This is the second time I went back to the supermarket to buy it and I still forgot!
M: You can just borrow some of my soap for now. It's the blue bottle upstairs in the bathroom. I can buy some more soap for you after I go shopping at the grocery store later.
W: Thank you. I really wanted to take a shower since we were at the beach all morning. I'm just so tired from swimming that I forget everything! I'm so glad to be home now.
M: Yeah, I'm tired too. I think swimming at the beach is even more tiring than in a pool or a river. It was a nice drive down there, though.
W: Yes, the weather was beautiful today. I was thinking of how nice it would be to take a train on a day like this.
M: I never like trains actually. I think on a day like this, I would prefer to ride a motorbike.
    Text 9
W: The pain began when I was skiing. It was a dull pain in my back at first, but it has gotten worse now. Usually I love skiing, but that was a bad day.
M: Did you lift anything heavy in the days before skiing? You may have hurt it then and not known until you started doing something stressful.
W: I helped my brother move the week before. Maybe I hurt myself, lifting a sofa or a box. I think I would have felt the pain earlier, though.
M: It is probably how you got hurt. I'll schedule some tests before you go, but it is important that you take it easy until we know what happened. You should also stop in the drugstore and buy some mild pain medication. I'll refer you to a movement doctor as well. He will show you some movements to reduce your pain.
W: That would be great. I need to get back to work as soon as possible.
M: It says here on the sheet that you are a ski instructor. I don't recommend that you continue difficult activities like skiing until we know what is wrong.
W: Yes, I have been teaching ski lessons part time during the winter. I always need extra money for the holidays. My normal job is in an office though, so I have plenty of rest there. It's very boring.
    Text 10
Hello everybody. My name is David Anderson. I’m glad to be invited by the International Student Centre to give you a talk on how to protect yourselves and avoid losses, both on and off campus. First, if you, especially the girls, are in a café or restaurant, make sure that your bag is where you can keep an eye on it. If you want to leave for a while, don’t ask a stranger to take care of it. Just take it with you. Second, if you drive, park in a public car park, or at least in a well-lighted area if it’s at night. Avoid the quiet dark roads, and don’t leave your passport, laptop, or cash in the car. Third, if you have to walk home alone late at night, stick to well-lighted areas. If you really think someone is going to hurt you, go to the nearest house and ask for help. If a car stops to ask for information, just keep well clear of the door. At last, I just want to say that in this country, it is not allowed to carry a knife, or anything that can be used as a weapon, even if it’s for self-defense. Actually, this isn’t a dangerous town if you’re careful enough.
