    The Guide to Film Festivals

    Cannes Film Festival

    Cannes, France in May

    Top prize: Palme d’Or

History: The first Cannes Film Festival took place in September 1939, but it didn’t happen again until after World War II. The Palme d’Or prize was introduced in 1955. The festival became established during the 1960s and is now known as the world’s most important film festival.

Did you know? About 20 feature films compete each year for the Palme d’Or. Previous winners include Michael Moore and Quentin Tarantino. Unlike the Oscars, the top prize is frequently shared between two films. Famous films that have won the Palme d’Or include Apocalypse Now, Taxi Driver, La Dolce Vita and The Third Man. The festival attracts more than 40,000 people every year.

    Venice Film Festival

    Venice, Italy in August/ September

    Top prize: Non-competitive

History: The London Film Festival started in 1956 when a group of film critics led by the famous Dilys Powell, the film critic for The Sunday Times, got together over dinner. They discussed the festivals at Cannes and Venice, and they agreed that London needed one, too. They wanted to give people the opportunity to see films from around the world that were not being shown in the cinemas. The first festival showed 20 films at the National Film Theatre on the South Bank.

Did you know? The festival is one of Europe’s largest public film events, screening about 280 films from 60 countries. Although it is non-competitive, the British Film Institute awards the Sutherland Trophy to the most original and imaginative first feature film screened at the festival.

    .阅读理解

Just over 12 months ago I gave myself a challenge: giving up spending on all but the essentials for a whole year. It hasn't always been easy, but after a year I am wealthier and wiser. Embarrassingly,I have also realised just how much money I've squandered on the pubs, restaurants and mindless shopping.

Free of any financial worries, I was spending without thinking. Stuck in a cycle of consumerism(消费主义), I was struggling in vain to spend my way to happiness. Giving up spending for a year was an extreme approach, but I wanted to taste extreme frugality(节俭),shake up my spending patterns and overpay my mortgage(按揭)instead of shopping. I could continue to pay my bills, including mortgages, broadband(宽带),phone bills, charity donations, life insurances, money to help my family and basic groceries.

It was not easy, especially in the first few months. There were lows, such as when I missed my favourite jazz concerts and hit films. There have also been some awkward moments when I've paid a visit to a friend's house for dinner empty-handed. I did a lot of washing-up at my friends' houses in return this year.

I did find new ways to live, however. Using sites such as Eventbrite I have been to film screenings, wine tasting evenings and theatre productions for free. Living in London I have a wealth of free cultural activities on my doorstep and I've been to more art exhibitions this year than ever before. I even managed a free holiday, cycling to the Suffolk and Norfolk coast and camping on beaches. It's something I'd never done before and probably wouldn't have, were it not for the challenge.

The last 12 months have taught me what things I really need. I can honestly say I'm happier now. I've gained confidence and skills, done things and met lovely people that I wouldn't have otherwise done or met.

1.In the past the author wasted much money on the following EXCEPT .

A.try to form a virtue of frugality

    B.change her former spending habits

C.pay off her mortgage as soon as possible

D.reserve money for her everyday bills

3.What do we know about the author during her no-spending year?

A.She did a lot of washing and cooking in pubs.

B.She tried cycling and camping for the first time.

C.She explored more cultural activities in London.

D.She attended concerts and wine evenings for free.

4.How does the author eventually feel about her no-spending year?

    A.It's discouraging. B.It's challenging.

    C.It's beneficial. D.It's embarrassing.

    .七选五

Homework is made up of out-of-class activities and at-home activities teachers assign to students. It can include practice assignments that emphasize newly acquired skills. 1 Projects that have to be worked on in agreement with schoolwork also form a part of homework.

2 For example, to complete their homework in time, children start dividing their time into studying and playing, thus learning to complete their scheduled tasks within the time they have. They learn to do things on their own. They manage their time and complete their work independently.

Homework can also help build up children's confidence. 3 And those positive remarks can help develop students' confidence and encourage them to keep up with their good work.

In addition, homework gives students a chance to learn from their mistakes and overcome their weaknesses. It provides them with a platform to express what they know or have newly found, and exhibit their talents. 4 These help them improve their academic results.

However, to be as beneficial to students as possible, homework should be assigned properly. The amount and difficulty level of homework assignments should match the ages and abilities of students. 5 Homework proves to be beneficial only if it does not put students under stress or pressure.

    A.Otherwise, it will become punishment.

B.Homework can benefit students in many ways.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather's house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging on them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun spending the holidays at Grandpa's place.

This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.

Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door—one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.

One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed and turned(辗转反侧) in bed. Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung(紧抱) to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out,“That's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!” They ran outside the house instantly. They thought that that would be safe.

Suddenly, there was a loud sound;the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying,“The sea is rising! The sea is rising!” The villagers started running away from the beach. Sami watched dumbstruck(惊呆的).

The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are!” He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.

Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near.” He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water poured in.

Waves about twelve meters high came in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.

      注意:续写词数应为150左右。

    Paragraph 1:

Grandpa held Sami's hand tightly but a huge wave separated them.

    Paragraph 2:
