At the age of eight, Leon Portz was gradually losing his eyesight due to a born condition when he was given his first computer. By the age of nine, he had figured out how to speed up the machine-generated voice that could read out texts on websites and some electronic devices, allowing him to get the information faster. He now listens to texts much more quickly than before.
But his love of science only truly developed when he moved from his hometown in central
Germany to Marburg, a medieval(中世纪的) university town, to attend a school for the blind. As it turned out, that move transported him into a place of inclusive innovation.
Marburg proudly calls itself a city for blind people. As an educational institute for the blind,
the Blista in German was founded here during World War I, to provide opportunities for young men blinded in the war. The institute has had countless inventions for blind people since then. It has also shaped the town around it, turning it into a place where “everything is ideal for blind people”.
Marburg is small and hilly, so you can easily find where you are. Different kinds of leisure
facilities span the city, such as a horse-riding school for the blind, and blind rowing, football, climbing and skiing clubs.
The Blista and its students have driven many of these inventions. Law and psychology are
among the most popular course choices, as the materials can be studied easily with aids such as screen readers. Now teachers and pupils from the institute are trying another field: the natural sciences. “I don’t feel like a pioneer, but I guess I am one,” says Portz.
24. Why is “Leon Portz” mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To praise the determination of Leon. B. To show hardships of the disabled.
C. To stress the advantages of technology. D. To introduce the Blista in Marburg.
25. Who did the Blista originally benefit?
A. People blinded in World War I. B. People talented in innovation.
C. Disabled teenagers in Marburg. D. Blind youths across the world.
26. Which is a possible course newly developed at the Blista?
A. Law. B. Biology. C. Psychology. D. Rowing.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Leon Portz: A Blind Pioneer B. Courses Ideal for the Blind
C. Marburg: A City for the Blind D. The Blista Made by the Blind

The demanding 2025 federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) goal of 54.5 miles
per gallon across an automaker’s fleet(车队) is one of the driving factors behind a series of advancements in more efficient engine technologies. To meet the increasing fuel standards, automakers have relied on a range of vehicle types.
Most people tend to think of hybrids(混合的) and electric vehicles when talk turns to
energy efficient cars. A hybrid vehicle uses both electric drive and an internal engine to push the vehicle. When the driver slows, the battery partially recharges through regenerative braking. Today, there are hybrid versions of many modern mid-size cars. The most recent advancement comes in the form of plug-in hybrids with larger (and more expensive) battery packs that can be charged at home or the office, allowing you to drive greater distances on electric power, which significantly improves overall average fuel economy on most trips.
Electric cars are also evolving, but still confront hurdles when it comes to battery cost and a
somewhat limited range in certain models. Promising electrics are on the horizon, but it’s best to reserve judgment until we see whether they deliver at a price point more consumers can afford.
Hydrogen(氢) fuel cell vehicles are also advancing. Essentially, these are electric cars with
the electricity supplied by hydrogen and oxygen passing through a fuel cell stack(电磁堆). They’re super clean, producing only water vapor and a little heat at the tailpipe. Until we have a much larger hydrogen-fuel basic facilities, these types of vehicles will be limited to regional use in major metro areas.
As you can tell, along with engine technology, advancements have been made in many
other areas. With the technological competition among automakers, energy efficient cars are evolving at an impressive pace, and that’s a good thing for the planet.
28. Why do automakers develop various types of vehicles?
A. To promote the car production.
B. To boost the automobile industry.
C. To satisfy the customers’ demand.
D. To meet the federal CAFÉ’s standards.
29. What is the latest improvement of the hybrid car?
A. It can be applied to cars in various sizes.
B. It is equipped with plug-in battery packs.
C. It uses an internal engine and electric drive.
D. It can be partially charged via speeding drive.
30. What prevents the hydrogen-fuel cell vehicles being widely used?
A. The high cost of production. B. Its demand of super clean fuel.
C. The lack of supporting facilities. D. Its need of water vapor and heat.
31. What’s the author’s attitude to the future of energy efficient cars?
A. Supportive. B. Tolerant. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.

Social integration is the process through which minority groups interact, come together
or are incorporated within a community. Increased social integration helps reduce conflict and tension in society, and it can help the new migrants feel more connected to their new community. How do different groups remain relatively united in society?
A few countries around the world have adopted integrated frameworks to ensure there are
equal opportunities for migrants regardless of their backgrounds. Some European countries have learnt to embrace multiculturalism well. There are still ongoing efforts to narrow the difference, and the governments have encouraged their immigrants to take an active part in social, cultural, economic and political activities.
Integration takes place in neighborhoods, work places, schools and public places where
people from diverse backgrounds spend most of their time. Formal education, especially among the younger children, is one common platform that brings together diversified groups. Being in the same class as their foreign fellow students will teach the local children the meaning of
tolerance and empathy(共情). Participation in sports, community engagement and volunteer
work are also other possible ways that promote cooperation and other forms of tolerance. From participating in arts programs to being parent volunteers in schools, these platforms provide opportunities for people to mix and work towards a common cause. In these ways, meaningful relationships among those of different ages, ethnic groups are built on the basis of common interests.
Social integration is no doubt a dynamic process. Still, countries have also acknowledged
that human movement across borders cannot be stopped. Instead, it should be better managed so
that migration is safe, legal and beneficial for everyone. Societies are better off if they promote social integration through common practices that reduce tension, discrimination and poverty. Indeed, the government and local community play a key role in integrating these newcomers and making them contribute to new communities, while keeping their identities.
32. What may Social Integration bring to the new immigrants ?
A. More conflicts in society. B. Closer connection in community.
C. Minority tension in groups. D. Increasing differences in tradition.
33. What does the underlined word “embrace” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Create. B. Judge. C. Accept. D. Resist.
34. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Formal education matters in integration.
B. Voluntary work is taught by doing sports.
C. Diversified groups can be divided in school.
D. Common interests are provided by education.
35. What can be achieved by promoting social integration?
A. A dynamic government. B. A safer border.
C. A legal community. D. A better-off society.

Crazy fans will hold on to their admiration for their idols, no matter what. Some even trace their idols’ Facebook accounts or follow them on Instagram, or YouTube constantly. However, is all the news definitely true? In the world of social media, it is challenging to distinguish fake
news from real news. 36 They need to learn to be able to filter(过滤)before trusting what
they hear, see and read about their favorite idols.
Everyone knows that the media can be controlled. 37 People have constantly been
complaining about prejudice and lies in the media. So how can we be smart online? Here are some tips and tools:
1. Check the domain. Many fake news stories use similar URLs and domain names, but
rather than using a “.com”, they use “.com.co” endings. 38
2. Visit a fact-checking website. There are many reliable ones such as FactCheck org,
International Fact-Checking Network(IFCN), or Snopes.com. 39 Check that the article
contains references and links to other news stories, articles and authors. Good news stories are supported by evidence, dates and other data.
3. 40 — are there noticeable grammatical errors? Know this — reputable sources
have high proofreading and grammatical standards! Is the story of the celebrity current or recycled? Make sure an older story has not been taken out of context.
Remember, false news travels faster online than real news. Next time you read an article,
hear an opinion, or see a picture, consider the flip sides of the story.
A. Keep the story and grammar in mind.
B. Pay attention to quality and timeliness.
C. Everything that you read on the Internet may not always be true!
D. Remember, do not believe everything you see, read or hear about.
E. For instance, abcnews.com is a reliable news source; abenews. com.co is not!
F. Be your own Sherlock Holmes and feel more confident about distinguishing fact from fiction.
G. Young fans, particularly, need tools to help them navigate(导航)the troubled waters of social media.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。A week before Halloween, my young children wild with great happiness were walking and
running around our home in their Halloween costumes. Just then the babysitter called, telling me that she was extremely sorry for asking for a day off. I knew that emergencies did occur, and I told her that I completely understood. But what was actually going through my mind were feelings of frustration and self-pity. And I had to pack my three kids into the car, and then drove to the hospital.
On the way, numerous things flooded into my mind, and I especially thought about how life
should be going. I was thirty years old, a mother of three girls — five-year-old twins and a
one-year-old baby. At this moment, I should be playing with them in the park or visiting the library together. But I was, once again, going to see the doctor. It had been a year since I was diagnosed with cancer. I knew that I was one of the lucky ones. I was grateful that surgery and
chemotherapy (化疗) were over, and this was just a routine blood test. As always, there was the
remaining fear that the cancer would come back. To be honest, my family and friends were great during the past year when I was in bad condition, but they were also busy with their lives. Therefore, I did not want to burden them with my feelings of unhappiness. What I just wanted to see were the positive things in life and I really wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to them.
When we finally arrived, we sat in a crowded waiting room. Nothing special occurred until
my youngest daughter, dressed up as an angel, walked up to a woman who was in a wheelchair and accompanied by her caregiver. My daughter looked at the woman and pointed to the vending(售货) machine next to her, saying sweetly, “Tweet.” This was how she said “Trick or Treat”, who had been coached previously by her twin sisters.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
高三英语 第10页(共10页)Surprisingly, the woman, a complete stranger to us, knew exactly what my daughter meant.
