Chinese elements highlighted at Olympic closing ceremony
The curtains came down on the closing ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games Sunday night at Bird's Nest in Beijing. During the ceremony, many Chinese cultural elements were put into the design of the grand show, expressing some Chinese romance. They became the highlights of the closing ceremony and let's take a look.
    Festival lanterns
The closing ceremony began with a large snowflake torch appearing in the sky, echoing the moment from the opening ceremony. Then accompanied by cheerful music, children hung traditional Chinese festive lanterns, lighting up the emblem of the Winter Olympics, which originated from the Chinese character for winter, "dong". Chinese knot
The 12 Chinese zodiac(生肖)-themed ice cars created an outline of a Chinese knot with its wheel trails. And then it was enlarged, and an enormous "Chinese knot" was presented using digital AR technology. Each ribbon could be clearly seen, and all of the ribbons twisted together, symbolizing unity and a good fortune.
    Fish and riches
During the closing ceremony, the Malanhua Children's Choir from a mountainous area of Fuping county in Hebei province performed again, this time with different clothes. The Chinese paper-cut of double fish was seen on their clothes, meaning "rich and have a surplus in the next year" in Chinese culture.
    Willow(柳树) branch for farewell
In ancient times, Chinese people broke a willow branch and gave it to their friends, family or relatives when seeing them off, as willow sounds like "stay" in Mandarin. Willow branches appeared in the closing ceremony, expressing Chinese people's hospitality and bidding farewell to the world guests.
    21. Which of the flowing is inspired by the Chinese character “dong”?
    A. Festive lanterns. B. A snowflake torch. C. The emblem. D. Cheerful music.
    22. What characteristic did “Chinese knot” and “Fish and riches” share?
    A. Both employed AR technology. B. Both symbolized a wealthy life.
    C. Both were created by ice cars. D. Both were performed by children.
    23. Which one can be adopted as a symbol of departure ?
    A. Festive lanterns. B. Chinese knot. C. Fish and riches. D. Willow branch.

A Norfolk sheepdog named Peggy spent most of her life working on a farm and helping her human herd animals from place to place. She was great at her job, which requires keen intelligence and the ability to listen to a shepherd’s signals. But everything changed when Peggy suddenly went deaf for unknown reasons.
Peggy was sent to an animal shelter in 2018. With the shelter full, staffers tried to find a foster family for her to spend the holidays with. Thankfully, animal welfare manager Chloe Shorten stepped up to take her in! “We decided she could stay with us temporarily while we found somewhere more permanent to take her in, but we completely fell in love with her almost immediately and it soon became clear that she wouldn’t be going anywhere!” Chloe said. “She was greasy and out of condition, untrusting, and frightened,” the shelter added.
“She soon started to bond with me and we started taking her fun places like the beach, something we don’t think she has ever experienced before,” Chloe said. “With some tender loving care and good food, Peggy soon started to adjust to life. Several months on and Peggy has blossomed into a dog who is continuing to improve daily.”
One of the biggest ways Peggy’s new family helped her adjust was getting her back to work. Working dogs are bred to do a specific job, and without a purpose, they can grow depressed and bored. So Chloe introduced the dog to hand signs and taught her to use her eyes in place of her ears while on the job. Now that she’s 10, she’s “generally retired,” but she still enjoys herding and continues to impress her family with how quickly she learns new skills.
    24. What can we infer about the Peggy from the text?
    A. She is ten and has retired. B. she went deaf due to a rare condition .
    C. It was long before she adjusted to her new life. D. She was abandoned by her former family.
    25. How many ways did the Chloe use to help Peggy adjust in the text?
    A. Two B. Three C. Five D. Six
    26. Why did the Chloe get Peggy back to work?
    A. They were depressed and bored by her performance.
    B. They wanted to help her recover her sense of hearing.
    C. They needed her to help them herding animals.
    D. They were concerned about her mental health.
    27. Which of the following best describes Peggy?
    A. Aggressive and shy B. Adaptable and gifted
    C. Untrusting and greasy D.Fierce and talented
    C
A TRAIN operator from Britain has made travelling more enjoyable—by hosting live yoga classes during journeys.
Heathrow Express passengers travelling on October 13 were treated to sessions with yoga influencer Celest Pereira, who has developed a 12-minute seat-yoga and meditation session to help travellers relax. The class has been developed so travellers of all ages and abilities can perform the exercises safely from their seats—and it’s believed to be the first time a yoga class has taken place on a moving train and it received fabulous feedbacks.
To get passengers in the right stage of mind, the “Tranquil Train” carriage hosting the sessions was decorated with fresh eucalyptus(桉树叶) and lavender(薰衣草) to fill the carriage with calming fragrances, as a consequence of which the passengers might feel much more light-hearted.
The initiative was launched after a study also conducted by Heathrow Express found more than half of public transport users find travel stressful following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Celest Pereira said, “Travelling can get people very unsettled. As there’s lots going on, lots of things to think about, and it’s very deadline driven so it can be a very intense experience.” By hosting these classes we’re hoping to relieve those pressures and help passengers be in the present moment, feel less overwhelmed and relieve any muscle tension. Moreover, these kind of classes are likely to produce prized memories.
The surveyed adults also identified the most frustrating aspects of travel—including delayed departures, big crowds, noisy environment as well as dull waits. They revealed that more quiet carriages, more reserved seats, free snacks or refreshments plus reserved places for luggage and onboard entertainment contributed to taking mind off worrying things. These researches will make a big difference to a better travel experience.
    28. What inspired Heathrow Express to host live yoga class during journeys?
    A. Yoga classes enjoy popularity in public transport.
    B. The calming atmosphere in carriages makes people dance.
    C. Public transport users often feel lighthearted when traveling.
    D. Over half of public transport users surveyed find travelling stressful.
    29. What does the underlined word “overwhelmed” in paragraph 6 mean?
    A. Overdue. B. Overjoyed. C. Overcome. D. Overestimated.
    30. Which of the following can reduce people’s worry according to the study?
    A. The entertainment on the train. B. Lower noise in the carriages.
    C. Seats free of charge. D.Overcrowded departures.
    31. Which can be the best title for the text?
    A. Elements to people’s worry aboard B. Unsettling travels and live yoga classes
    C. Ways to release traveler’s concerns D. Live anti-pressure yoga classes aboard
    D
Chinese scientists have identified a new protein that restricts HIV infection, a discovery that could pave the way for the development of new drugs against the virus. The protein, P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1 (PSGL-1), which exists in human cells, can inhibit(抑制) the process by which HIV reproduces, according to research published in the science journal Nature Microbiology this month.
However, the study also showed that PSGL-1 can be negatively affected by Vpu-an accessory(附属) protein of HIV-which can neutralize the ability of PSGL-1 to resist HIV. Further research is under way to develop a drug that can inhibit the HIV protein so that PASGL-1 can restrict HIV, according to Tan Xu, a researcher at Tsinghua University's School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, a leading author of the study.
Several other proteins in human cells that could resist HIV have been discovered over the past 10 years, but the virus can also evade(避开) them. PSGL-1 shows particular promise in that it can inhibit the HIV in multiple ways-especially by blocking the infectiousness of virus offspring, Tan said. "We are starting to research into small molecule(分子)compounds in the hope of finding one that can restore PSGL-1's anti-HIV function. In this way we can develop a very effective antiviral drug for people with HIV/AIDS," he said. Tan said it will require at least three to five years for the research to reach the preclinical stage, and more time after that before a clinical trial is possible. The research was conducted by researchers at Tsinghua University in Beijing, Fudan University in Shanghai and George Mason University in the United States.
Existing treatment methods for people with HIV/AIDS, which mostly rely on a combination of different drugs, can prevent the disease from progressing but cannot cure it, and long-term use of drugs can result in drug resistance.
An estimated 37 million people in the world live with HIV, according to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. The study provides new leads to developing antiviral drugs, Tsinghua University said in a statement.
32.What can we learn about PSGL-1 from the passage?
    A. Both the protein PSGL-1 and the protein Vpu are HIV proteins.
    B. PSGL-1 can restrict the function of the protein Vpu.
    C. PSGL-1’s molecule compounds have been identified.
    D. The protein PSGL-1 functions better than others in resisting HIV .
33.What can we infer from the last three paragraphs?
    A. The existing treatment for HIV are far from perfect.
    B. It will be a decade before the antiviral drugs is put on the market.
    C. American scientists played a leading role in the research.
    D. HIV/AIDS will no longer be a deadly disease owing to the new discovery.
34.What is the main idea of the passage?
    A. There is a long way to go before curing HIV.
    B. More people are faced with the threat of HIV.
    C. Chinese scientists are leading the way in curing HIV.
    D. A new protein to resist HIV was confirmed by scientists.
    35. Where is this text most likely from?
    A. A journal B. A fiction C. A magazine D. A brochure

The New York Times reported that phone calls have made a comeback during the pandemic. Verizon, an American wireless network operator, told the Times that it’s now handling an average of 800 million wireless calls daily during the week. That’s more than double the calls made on Mother’s Day, which is one of the busiest days of the year for phone calls. 36 Similarly, AT&T Inc. reported that the number of cell calls has increased by 35%.
37 And there’s nothing like creating a big family get-together by cramming everyone on a screen. It’s great that you can see the people you’re talking to.
But sometimes, something gets lost when video is involved. Video calls and apps are “undeniably brilliant,”writes the Guardian. “But there’s a performance involved, distractions, and people coming and going. If you want to actually say something to someone, just call them.38 ”.
If you are old enough, you might remember having one phone for the whole family. “The shared family phone served as an anchor for home,” Luke Fermandez, a computer-science professor at Weber State University says. “With smartphones, we have gained mobility and privacy.39 ”
But now so many of us are turning back to our phones to find family. In Dickinson, the city council members shared the city phone book in late March to call residents to check in. Council member Katie Pinkie wrote in the Dickinson Press, “ They shared stories of faith, friendly and health. The people I called to check in on ended up helping me more. 40 “What would happen if we all used this time of the social distancing to reconnect the old-fashioned way?”Landline or mobile phone, start dialing.
    A. Before Caller ID, you did not know who was calling.
    B. Many of us are also talking to our families on video chat.

I always cherished my working experience as a teacher, as I learned a lot from my dear students, those little kids yet full of wisdom, which helped me a lot in my later life.
When I worked in a primary school, Friday afternoon was our school-wide sports program finale (尾声) in the gym. The finale was a series of races and games. There were jump rope relays, basketball relays, soccer relays, minute-to-win-it games and a host of other challenges for my first graders. There were balls escaping, jump ropes tangling (缠绕), and the first graders clapping and cheering each other on with abandon.
One of the hardest games was a basketball shooting game. Each kid stood at a line and shot five baskets. This was a very hard task for first graders. That basket might as well have been in the clouds. One of my darling little girls was chosen for this game.
She was an adorable kid. When she got excited about something, her blue eyes opened wide and she waved her arms. I’d seen her act like this when reading her favorite books, when mastering particularly difficult math problems, when playing after class and especially when she painted.
She stood at the line, basketball in hand, with a serious expression on her face. She shot. Air ball. She scrunched up (皱起) her face in concentration and shot again. Air ball. Her third and fourth shots went through the air and again fell short. Not one of her five shots even came close to the net. Not a single one.
Poor little kid! I felt sorry for her, but didn’t find a chance to comfort her during the finale.
Back in the classroom, those kids were still in excitement. After the conclusion of the sports program, we decided to gather together to talk about all the fun we’d had.
Unexpectedly, my tiny air baller raised her hand, “Mrs. McCauley, I want to share!”
What? What did she want to share? She got five air balls! She must have got me wrong.
Then, she said, “I was nervous about that basketball game at first because I’d never played it before.” She paused. Immediately, I searched in my mind for words of encouragement or some advice, anything, to ease the pain of all those air balls.
    注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 词左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
However, she continued with her arms waving in wild excitement, “But then I played the game and I was awesome at it!” _____________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next time I was faced with a new challenge, I would remember her face, scrunched up in concentration. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Hello, everyone! I feel greatly honored to stand here to extend my warm welcome to you representing all the students. I believe your visit will promote the development of our school greatly.
During your visit, we will show you around the school and school history gallery, which will facilitate your understanding of our school and even evoke some of your joyful memories. 读后续写:
    One possible version:
However, she continued with her arms waving in wild excitement, “But then I played the game and I was awesome at it!” Holding up five proud fingers, she said she could throw the ball five times higher than before. Seeing her self-satisfied look and obvious glee, I couldn’t help bursting into laughter. How unnecessary it was for me to think about providing my comfort and advice. As was so often the case, I found myself surprised at the unconventional wisdom of my students. I was so hard on myself when trying new things, so unwilling to make an attempt for fear that I might fail.
The next time I was faced with a new challenge, I would remember her face, scrunched up in concentration.I would remember her courage in admitting she was nervous. But most of all, I would remember her wild, waving arms and the look of victory on her face for throwing the basketball higher than she ever had before. She didn’t make any baskets that day, and for that I was grateful, because if she had, I would have missed the lesson. She didn’t score any points but one thing was for sure, my little air ball queen was a winner - She succeeded in telling everyone it was the efforts in the process rather than the results that mattered.

    书面表达评分标准
    读后续写写作思路:
    一、原文分析
    1. 第一段中 “...those little kids yet full of wisdom, which helped me a lot in my later life.”
    续写第一段首句:“她激动得手舞足蹈”与“我”之前对她的理解形成反差和冲突,语言描写解释了女孩兴奋是觉得自己特别“擅长”这个项目,又与“我”和一般人理解的“擅长”形成反差和冲突。所以其后可着重描写“我”听到女孩的话以后的反应和想法,并照应原文第一段,从小女孩身上学到了一课,从而引出下一段内容。
    续写第二段首句:下次“我”遇到挑战时,会想起女孩扔球时聚精会神的样子,与原文照应。此段后面部分,可着重写作者态度的转变,以及从学生身上领悟到学会面对生活中挑战的态度:努力并取得进步、超越自我即是胜利,不用盲目追求所谓的“赢”或者成功。

    书面表达评分标准:
    1. 本题评分时,应主要从内容、词汇和语法、篇章结构等方面考虑:
    (1)与所给短文及段落开头语的衔接程度;
    (2)情节内容的合理性;
    (3)语法结构和词汇的丰富性和准确性;
    (4)上下文的连贯性。
    2. 总分为25分,按六个档次进行评分:
    (1)第五档(21-25分)漂漂亮亮:与所给短文融合度高;与所提供各段落开头语衔接合理;所使用语法结构和词汇丰富、准确,没有错误或者有少许错误,不影响意义表达;有效地使用了语句间的连接成分,使续写短文结构紧凑流畅。
    (2)第四档(16-20分)清清楚楚:与所给短文关系较为密切;与所提供各段落开头语有一定程度的衔接;语法结构和词汇能满足任务的要求,虽有一些错误,但基本不影响意义表达;应用简单的语句间连接成分,使全文内容有一定连贯性。
    (3)第三档(11-15分)马马虎虎:与所提供短文有一定的关系,与所提供各段落开头语有一定程度的衔接;语法结构单调,词汇项目有限,有些语法结构和词汇方面的错误,影响了意义表达;较少使用语句间的连接成分,全文内容缺少连贯性。
    (4)第二档(6-10分)糊里糊涂:与所提供短文和开头语的衔接较差,产出内容太少;语法结构单调,词汇项目很有限,有较多语法结构和词汇方面的错误,严重影响了意义表达;全文连贯性很少或无。
    (5)第一档(1-5分)一塌糊涂:与原文内容略有关联甚至无关联;语法和词汇偶尔正确;无衔接,文段只是词句的堆砌,支离破碎。
    (6)零分档(0分):空白卷;全部抄袭材料原文或者试卷上其他部分的语句;所写内容过少或无法看清以致等无法评判。
    3.评分时,应先根据作答的整体情况确定其所属档次,然后以该档次的要求来综合衡量,确定或者调整档次,最后给分。
    4. 注意:
    (1)关于主题升华:可以升华,也可以不升华,将过程叙述清楚,合乎情理即可。升华好的可以酌情加2分,但不做硬性要求;
    (2)不足140词扣2分;对词数没有上限,即超词不扣分;
    (3)如果仅续写一段,三档中位12.5分为上限,在此基础上相应扣分;
    (4)拼写与标点符号是语言准确性的一个方面,评分时应视其对交际的影响程度予以考虑。英、美拼写及词汇用法均可接受;
    (5)书写较差以至于影响交际的酌情扣分。

    Text 4

    Text 5
M: There was a special discount at the barber’s today. I got my hair cut for half off. Do you like it?
W: Oh, no! It looks like the barber cut half your hair off! (5)
    Text 6
W: Look at this Monet painting! It is my favorite piece. The gently flowing river, the water lilies, the bridge…it looks like such a secret and magical garden.
    M: I agree.
    W: What’s your favorite painting?
M: It’s not here at the Chicago Museum of Art. (6) It’s in a museum in China. I studied some of Lang Shining’s works in my art history class during college. (7) He was a court painter for over 50 years during the Qing dynasty. Among the top 10 masterpieces of traditional Chinese painting, there’s a painting called Baijun Tu or One Hundred Horses. It was painted by him. (7) Can you believe it, though — he was an Italian!
    W: Wow, it is amazing.
    Text 7
M: Hello? Mom, is that you?
W: It’s me, Brian. How is everything going? Have you found a job yet?
M: Umm…no, not yet. I’m still looking. I’ve been getting some interviews, though.
W: That’s good, dear. Have you heard back from the university?
M: Uh…no, not yet, Mom. It might take them a while to get through all of the applications. (8) Mine was probably the last one they received.
W: Oh, no! You didn’t send it in at the last minute again, did you?
M: Actually, I got it in 45 minutes before the deadline! (8)
W: Am I supposed to be impressed? You said you had 15 days to get it done!
M: Well, you know me, Mom! I can’t be rushed! (9)
W: Just like your father. (9) I should be used to it by now! I only hope you’ll be happy forever, son.
    M: Thanks, Mom.
    Text 8
W: Mr. Adams, are you able to take over Mr. Moore’s classroom today? He’s out sick, (10) and our regular substitute teacher just got hired in another district. We haven’t figured out how to replace him, yet.
M: I’ll be happy to do it, Mrs. Garcia. Is he only teaching physics this term?
W: No… Some teachers quit recently, so we had to change some schedules. Mr. Moore still teaches three physics classes, but he also has a first-period chemistry class and a fifth-period World History class.
M: I see. Well, I should be able to handle everything except for the history class. I really don’t know much about that subject. (11)
W: Don’t worry! Mr. Moore is very organized. His lesson plan for the day is very clear and simple. All you need to do is have the students read the next chapter in the book. Then, there is a quiz to pass out. You should give them 20 minutes to complete it. At the end of the class, you give the students certain homework questions from the book. (12)
    M: That sounds easy enough!
    Text 9 (第13题为总结题)
M: I am bored. Do you want to play a game?
W: Sure. What type of game do you want to play? There are only two of us, and I don’t have any cards or board games.
M: That doesn’t matter. We can just ask each other skill-testing questions.
W: Oh, I see. You mean to see who is smarter?
M: Exactly. I ask you a question, and then you ask me one. Then we keep scoring to see how many we get right.
    W: All right. Let’s go.
M: I’ll go first. Which country has the highest mountain? (14) Is it in China, India, or Pakistan?
W: Well, I don’t think it’s Pakistan, so that leaves China and India. And I think Mount Everest is the highest, which is in China…so I’ll say that. India can’t be right.
M: Correct. Now it’s your turn.
W: Which sport is widely believed to be the most dangerous? (15) Is it mountain climbing, skydiving, or race-car driving?
M: Oh, I know this one…it’s mountain climbing. No, wait! It’s definitely race-car driving!
W: I’m sorry, that is incorrect. The right answer is skydiving. (15)
M: No way. All right, last question. What color is a polar bear’s skin? Black, pink, or white?
W: Hold on, I dropped something under the table… I got it! The answer is white.
M: No fair! I saw you look at your phone! You didn’t play by the rules! (16)
    Text 10 (第17题为总结题)
