When I first launched my business about 10 years ago and started working in Mexico, I noticed co-workers and friends greeting each other with a brief hug and a kiss on the cheek. So I started doing that too, as I believed it was the custom, until one day my business partner pulled me aside and said, "Can you stop hugging and kissing the receptionist every time you come into the office? I think it sends the wrong message."
I didn't understand the culture well enough to appreciate the unwritten rules. Yet, as CEO of a fast-growing multi-national company, that's exactly what I needed to learn——and fast. I not only wanted to stop sending the wrong message, but I wanted to start sending the right messages. I wanted to understand how to tap into the diverse aspects of Latino culture while staying true to the culture of my own country and business. Expanding to other geographies only increases the importance of sending the right messages that support a more open and diverse workforce.
"As a CEO, it's important to learn some of the basic phrases in the native languages of your employees——it shows your respect for their culture."
Every culture has its own set of primary cultural drivers. In the U.S., we tend to be driven by popularity, success and financial reward. Other regions' drivers can include family pride or community contribution. By learning these drivers and how they impact your relationships, you can build trust truly within your company. For example, in Northern Ireland and Mexico, I learned that family units stay close together and often meet every week for a meal, and co-workers are occasionally invited to these family functions. While this is not a regular practice in the U.S., I found that joining these family meals was crucial for building trust with my colleagues.
Over the years, I've learned to talk openly about these awkward aspects of culture and diversity. They need to be dealt with head-on to come to a solution. By doing so, you can build trust and bridge large differences that lead to better productivity, higher levels of innovation, and a more enjoyable company culture that represents every culture that makes up your business. As leaders, it's our job to put these issues on the table and hammer through them sincerely — no matter the cultural divide.
4. The author mentions hugging and kissing on the cheek to.
A. demonstrate he/she is integrated in Mexico.
B. provide an example of his misunderstanding.
C. support he/she is fully aware of the custom.
D. compare body language in different cultures.
5. What can we learn from the 4th paragraph?
A. People in U.S bank on family functions.
B. People in Mexico focus more on success.
C. Cultural motivations vary with the country.
D. Building trust mainly relies on socializing.
6. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase "hammer through" in the last paragraph?
A. tackle B. demand D. illustrate D. repeat
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. What is cultural diversity?
B. What is proper body language?
C. How to send the right messages?
D. How to build trust in a diverse culture?
C
Researchers say the world has lost more than one fourth of its land-based insects over the past 30 years. The finding comes from a major study of insect populations worldwide. The researchers noted the loss of such insects suggests a more complex problem than earlier research has shown.
Ants, bees, butterflies and other land-based insects have been suffering population drops of about nine percent every 10 years or so. The number of insects on average has declined in the air, in the grass and soil, but not in trees or underground, the researchers found. Some estimates show that land-based insects will face a population drop of 24 percent in the next 30 years. The researchers did not find a link to climate change in the loss of insects. But they did note that widespread effects of growing cities and loss of underdeveloped areas to agriculture.
However, freshwater insects, such as dragonflies and mosquitoes, have been a different story. These insects were found to have experienced a population increase of about 1 percent every 10 years. Freshwater covers only 2.5 percent of the Earth's surface, so the majority of insects live mainly on land. The researchers said clean-water policies established in recent years were responsible for the increase in freshwater insects.
“The decline across insect orders on land is very surprising," said Nick Haddad, an expert on butterflies at Michigan State University. He was not involved in the study. Ongoing decline on land at this rate will be extremely damaging for ecological systems and for humans, Haddad told the Associated Press. He noted that insects are pollinators( 传粉昆虫).They move pollen from part of the flower of a plant to another part. This causes the plant to produce fruit or seeds. Insects also help to break down dead plants and animals. Nick Haddad added that insects also serve as food to many animals, making them very important to the earth's ecosystems.
Other scientists said the findings made sense. They would go on with the study with more accurate data.
8. What is the finding of the study mainly about?
A. The disturbance of the earth's ecosystems.
B. The diversity of creatures in the world.
C. The complexity of studying land-based insects.
D. The change in the number of insects worldwide.
9. What was the main cause of the insects' situation according to the author?
A. Human activity B. Climate change
C. A lack of freshwater D. Frequent natural disasters
10. Why does the author say freshwater insects have been a different story?
A. They reproduce very quickly.
B. Their habitat has been protected.
C. Their population is in the minority.
D. They can live both on land and in water.
11 .What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The relationship between insects and plants.
B. The importance of insects to the ecosystems.
C. The significance of further studying insects.
D. Human’s influence on the decline of wildlife.

One summer afternoon, after doing some shopping at a grocery store close to a forest reserve in Hawaii, Amanda Eller, a hiking lover, parked her car and went hiking by herself. With two bottles of water and a loaf of bread, she started a 3-mile hike.
However, it was not long after she stepped into the forest that she found she had left her phone in the car. Thinking that a 3-mile hike was a piece of cake for a trained hiker like her, Amanda did not hesitate to continue the trip and carefully left marks on the trees every 100 steps.
As she went deeper, rain fell heavily beyond expectation and the road became muddy soon. Without an umbrella, she had to hide under a big rock and waited for the downpour to stop. Half an hour later, the rain eased off but the sky darkened. Her heart began racing since she could not see the marks on the trees clearly. In the forest, Amanda wanted to go back along the way she had come but her feeling was leading her another way. She knew that she had very strong intuition (直觉)and heard the inner voice saying, If you want to live, keep going." She chose to believe her intuition and took the only way to go.
Amanda's mother, Julia, did not see her that night and her phone was also not answered, so she called Amanda's close friends and asked if they had seen her. After making sure that Amanda did not return from the forest, Julia called 911 and reported her missing. Two days passed, and rescuers found nothing. Julia was sad, saying that this was the most desperate and the worst thing for a mother but she wanted to stay positive as she felt that she would be of no help to her daughter if she only thought about the worst possibilities. And local TV stations and newspapers called on people to work together to find Amanda.
Along with rescue workers, hundreds of volunteers set out.
A day after she was saved, Amanda was interviewed by the local reporters at the hospital.
