The world we live in is rapidly changing. Technology, travel, and new advances in a huge variety of different fields are changing the ways we live around the globe. In the past, certain cities or even entire countries that were regarded as dangerous are now opening up and becoming incredible places to live in. Places that people would barely travel to, let alone decide to live in, have become some of the most exciting and dynamic cities on the planet. It's truly incredible how so many cities are growing and meeting the demands of the 21st-century lifestyle.
Honestly, all of these cities that are changing so quickly just make us want to travel around the world and explore new places! Here are four cities that have changed greatly over the past five years.

There are plenty of historic buildings still around, nice harbors where boats are docked, and lots of cute new cafes, art galleries, and shops popping up. The scenery there is truly beautiful, with wildlife unlike anywhere else. Travelers should make their way over!
Medellin,Colombia
In the past, you might have heard about how Colombia was dangerous-but things are rapidly improving for this South American nation, and Colombian cities are changing for the better. Loungi Bhuiyan, a man in an Indian dry village, has dug up a 3-km-long canal(隧道) in 30 years to bring irrigation(灌溉) water to the fields in his village, reminding once again what a determined person can do if he sets out to achieve what he has aimed for.
The village is around 80km from Gaya city, surrounded by thick forests and mountains. The main means of livelihood for the local people are farming and animal raising.
Since the villagers could not get enough rainwater for irrigation, a large number of the village's youths went to bigger cities to make a living. Bhuiyan became increasingly unhappy as more and more farmers-including four of his own sons-left the village, leaving most women and children behind. And he was determined not only to dream an impossible dream but to make that dream come true by single-handed bringing water to his village in the hope of transforming the dry land into rich fields.
Inspired by “Mountain Man” Dashrath Manjh, who, with just a hammer and chisel (凿子),spent 22 years cutting out a road through the mountain near the village from 1960 to 1982,Bhuiyan set out to dig an irrigation canal by hand to the closest water source in the Bangetha Hills. He knew that the water source was enough to irrigate the agricultural land of the villagers. However, it was a great challenge to bring water into the village.
“I had heard about 'Mountain Man' Dashrath Manjh and I thought if he could do it, why can't I?” said Bhuiyan. “They all thought I was mad.”
Despite the tease from his family and fellow villagers, the now 70-year-old Bhuiyan worked every day to make the four-foot-wide by three-foot-deep canal a reality. It took him nearly 30 years to achieve his goal, and now everyone is benefiting from the fruits of his decades' long labors.
“The canal will benefit a large number of animals and irrigate the fields as well. I'm not doing it simply for my own benefit but for the entire area,” said the old man.
Bhuiyan, whose reputation as a mad man has since been transformed into a local hero, was recently rewarded for his efforts with a new tractor(拖拉机),which will be used to expand the canal.
24.Loungi Bhuiyan decided to dig the canal so that
A.he could make money by selling water
B.water resources would be brought to his village
C.his four sons would be attracted back to the village
D.it would be easy and convenient to ship goods to other areas
25.How did other villagers react to Loungi Bhuiyan's decision?
A.They just laughed at Loungi Bhuiyan.
B.They joined Loungi Bhuiyan in carrying out his plan.
C.They offered Loungi Bhuiyan lots of practical advice.
D.They were strongly against Loungi Bhuiyan's decision.
26.Which of the following can be used to describe both Loungi Bhuiyan and Dashrath Manjh?
A.Smart and crazy. B.Brave and strong.
C.Generous and humorous. D.Determined and hard-working.
27.What is Loungi Bhuiyan likely to do next?
A.Dig a new canal. B.Make improvements to the canal.
C. Go to live with his kids in the city. D.Cut out a road through the mountain.

It's easy to forget how fragile smartphones used to be. If you were going to knock your phone off your desk a decade ago, it might as well fall into the Grand Canyon. Many of you know the familiar, unpleasant feeling of using a phone with a spiderweb of scratches (划痕)running across the screen.
Screens have gotten much tougher in recent years. And they're about to get even tougher. Corning just introduced the latest version of its Gorilla Glass material that can survive higher falls and endure more pressure before scratching.
Corning calls its new material Gorilla Glass Victus, which it claims can survive a 6.7 feet, up from 5. 3 feet in its previous model. Corning also claims Victus can endure double the pressure during the Knoop Diamond test, which uses a metal point under pressure to test how hard a material is to scratch. Once the glass is scratched, the company applies a “ring-on-ring" pressure test to find out how much force is required to break the already scratched glass. Corning claims Victus showed a double performance increase over the previous model.
Corning hasn't specified exactly what has changed from a chemical standpoint with Victus, but the production involves the company's ion-exchange process to give it extra strength. The raw glass material takes a bath in boiling salt water. The process gives the material its resilience(弹性).
Corning claims this is the first time that Gorilla Glass has shown great improvements in both scratch resistance and drop survival. Despite its improvements, the company says it will be able to keep the price of the new material the same. Because it is tougher and resists scratches better, it can travel through the production lines faster without the risk of damaging the smooth surfaces. Faster production translates into lower costs.
Currently, Samsung employs Gorilla Glass 6 in its flagship Galaxy Note 10 phone, which has a large 6.3-inch screen with a considerable surface area to attract scratches. Corning hasn't officially announced any official devices in which Victus will appear, but it has a long-standing relationship with Samsung, so it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see it turn up in future models.

C. applying “ring-on-ring” pressure D.changing the production process
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

Junior Alvarado was worried when he began his first year in the Washington Leadership Academy. He often struggled in his math classes and earned poor grades in middle school. But the teachers at the Washington Leadership Academy used computer programs to identify the areas he was weak in and designed a learning plan just for him.
“They explain the problem step by step. It wouldn't be as fast, but at your speed,” said the 15-year-old,“Now I feel better about my math skills.”
The use of technology in schools is part of a larger idea of personalized learning. This idea has been gaining popularity in recent years.
Personalized learning is a way of teaching centered around the interests and needs of individual students instead of entire classes as a whole. It includes flexible learning environments, specially-designed education plans, and letting students help decide what and how they learn.
At Washington Leadership Academy, educators use computer programs to collect information on students' performance. This information helps teachers follow their students' progress and make changes to lessons that meet students' individual needs. That way students are able to master subjects at their own speed.
Supporters say traditional methods, where teachers just speak at the front of the class and test students all at once, do not match the modern world.
Joseph Webb, headmaster of the Washington Leadership Academy, says the digital tools help teachers identify problems students are facing before they become too serious.
“We can solve them right then and there; we don't have to wait for the problem to come to us,” he said.
Still, many researchers say it is too early to tell if personalized learning works better than traditional teaching.
A recent study found that personalized learning only led to small improvements. It found only a 3-percent improvement in math and even smaller improvements in reading compared to schools with traditional teaching methods. In addition, experts in children's health warn that the overuse of technology can damage face-to-face relationships and young people's interest in physical activities.
Some teachers have their doubts as well. Marla Kilfoyle, a teacher in a public high school, admits that technology can be helpful in the classroom in many ways. But she argues that no computer program should ever replace the personal touch, support and inspiration teachers give their students.
32.Junior Alvarado has made progress in math because
A.he went to a new public school
B.his teachers used computer programs to help him
C.his teachers helped him make up the lessons that he missed
D.he identified his weak areas on his own and worked harder than before
33.What is a personalized learning class like?
A.Students meet with fewer problems.
B.Students can learn at their own pace.
C.Students are allowed to do whatever they like.
D. Students can solve problems using cellphones.
34.What does Joseph Webb think of using computer programs in teaching?
A.Quite helpful. B.Rather meaningless.
C.Absolutely impractical. D.Extremely funny.
35.Which of the following would be the most proper title for the text?
A.Are traditional teaching methods out of date?
B. Why is personalized learning becoming so popular?
C.Can computer programs help students and teachers?
D.Will teachers be replaced by modern technology?

When I first realized that Martha Graham was a biography, I didn't think it would be an interesting book. But after I got into the book, I realized how wrong I was. Martha
Graham was a headstrong and independent woman, who, like me, was fully devoted to dance. 36 In fact, I learned a lot from her that I could use in dance.
37 One is that if you read lots of different things, they will expand your imagination, so you will have more creative energy to use on creating dances. The other is watching people and animals to learn how they focus their energy and their movements, so that those movements can later be applied to the dances.
I don't completely agree with Martha when she states that she doesn't think classical ballet shows enough emotion and drama. 38 We both enjoy dance, music, plays and poems. We also have the same kind of sense of humor.
In fact, I also learned more about Martha Graham from the book. I was very impressed to learn that Martha created 181 dances in her life. I could easily imagine the pain Martha felt when her father died. 39
One thing I thought I definitely knew about Martha Graham was that she lived a long time ago. 40 She died on April 1,1991 when she was ninety-six years old. To sum up, this is a wonderful, well-written book and I would like to recommend it to anyone who likes to dance or enjoys reading biographies.
A.However,we are alike in many other ways.
B.But in the end, I realized that I had been wrong.
C.She also made a major mark in dance history.
D.I learned two very interesting things that she did.
E.She was the cleverest artist I've ever met.
F.She wrote many famous books about dance.
G.I have read several biographies, but this one was the best.

In a perfect world, all cats would have homes. However, our world is not perfect, with many cats 61 (live) outside in large groups in cities. And these groups 62 (grow)bigger and bigger if people do nothing about it. Besides killing birds and other animals, they spread diseases. Some people want to fix the problem 63 killing the cats, but that's cruel.
There is a better way. Trap-Neuter-Return(TNR) is the most humane(人道的)and effective method 64 (know) for managing these cats. TNR programs can not only save cats' 65 (life) but also reduce their numbers. TNR has a few steps. First, trap the cats and take them to the vet(兽医),66 will give the cats an operation so that they can't give birth to baby cats. Then, the vet cuts their ears. That is a signal called ear notching(切口)to preventing people from taking cats to the vet's again for the operation. Because of the signal, you can notice them from a 67 (distant). The cats are also able to be accurately captured. Finally, they 68 (send) back to their original areas where a caretaker provides regular food and shelter.

Last Friday, I was playing in the park while I saw a purse on a bench. Obviously, someone has left it there by accident. I picked up and saw what was in it. I found out some money and a card with a phone number. Believing that the owner would be worrying, I immediately dialed the number.
A woman answered it in a anxious voice. Heard I had her purse, she said she would come over right away. Ten minutes later, the woman arrived. After making sure she was the owner, I handed the purse back for her. With her thumbs up, she expressed her thank to me repeatedly. I felt happily that I was able to help.

Text 4
M:Could you please tell me something about yourself,Miss Fang?

W:You should have made full preparations for the exam. After all,you can't expect to have such good luck each time.
Text 6
M:Have you finished the report,Lucy? It's due today.
W:I'm sorry,Mr. Black. I was supposed to finish it yesterday, but my granny was ill and I had to go to the hospital to see her.
M:Sorry to hear that.
W:I can hand the report to you at 4:00 this afternoon, Mr. Black.

Text 8
M:Sorry to trouble you,Alice, but could you please do me a favour?
W:At your service,David.
M:Please help me write an advertisement.
W:But what for?
M:You know, my parents have been working very hard to afford my schooling. I need to earn some extra money in my spare time so that I can support myself by giving violin lessons.

W:Um...
M:OK. Write down that a college student will give violin lessons for sixty pounds an hour...
W:Don't you think that you are charging too much? After all, you are not a professional music teacher. In my opinion, it will be all right if you charge half that.

M:Exactly. You should have waited till the traffic light turned green before you crossed the street. And you ought to have watched out for passing cars.
W:Sorry, sir. By the way, why did you get here so soon?
M:Someone phoned 911 and reported the accident. We happened to be nearby when we received the call.
Text 10
Elizabeth Cochrane was known as Nellie Bly, a famous female reporter. She wanted to be a newspaper reporter during a time when the reporters were only men. The editor of the Pittsburgh Dispatch finally gave Cochrane the chance she had hoped for. He made her a newspaper reporter and gave her the name Nellie Bly.
In 1887, Nellie became a reporter for the New York World. Her articles were about what she had experienced. Nellie once pretended to be a thief. She wanted to be caught so she could learn how the police treated women prisoners. Another time, Nellie got a job in a factory. She wanted to write about the terrible working conditions in factories.
In November,1889, Nellie began another one of her exciting adventures. At the time, a book titled Around the World in Eighty Days was very popular in America. It was a story about a man who travelled around the world in 80 days just to win a bet. Nellie wanted to beat that time.
On January 25,1890, Nellie returned from her journey around the world. She completed the journey in 72 days. Nellie had beaten the time in the book by a little more than a week. Nellie Bly was truly one of America's greatest reporters.

B项。
根据文章第四段中的“...the production involves the company's ion-
exchange process to give it extra strength. The raw glass material takes a bath in
boiling salt water. The process gives the material its resilience.”

31.答案:A
由文章最后一段,特别是其中的“...it has a long-standing
relationship with Samsung, so it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see it turn up in

38.答案:A

分析句子结构可知,“with many cats outside in large groups in cities”是“with+宾语十宾补”结构,在句中作状语。
62.答案:will grow
63.答案:by
be known for...为固定搭配,意为“因······而闻名”,此处需用过去分词短语作后置定语,相当于定语从句 which is known for managing these cats。

66.答案:who

73.答案:在picked和up之间加it
解析:pick up 表示“捡起”时,后面应接宾语,此处用it指代上文提到的a purse。
