Your honor! Let me say a few words for myself. What they have told you is not true. I was not trying to kill anyone, and it was hardly possible to try to kill three strong young men at the same time. I didn't have anything to kill people that night and was quite alone. I didn't know them and needn't hate them. I was attacked by them, and I knocked one of them down,it's true, but I was made to do it,or I might be killed by them. I did this not because I hated the white men as they said. I just had to do so. While I was beaten in the dark street by the three men, a policeman came, caught me and then took me here.
I know why I was beaten. I have just moved into a house next to these white men. I have felt that I am not welcome and I have tried to be quiet. I think, as an American,I have the right to choose where to live. If I'm guilty,it is because my colour is different from theirs and I can' t enjoy justice(公正). Yet, I am not guilty. This is all I want to say. Thank you, your honor.

Many of us may have experienced the pleasant moment of seeing recommended songs after we listen to some songs on a music app. When we open shopping websites, we often see things we want to buy on the home page. The businessman can decide which is the best place to build a new entrance in a big supermarket in the city center. If you want to take a taxi on a taxi app, it can even guess where you want to go before you tell it! Aren’t these things amazing?
This is based on data (数据). Data is no longer only about numbers, but information from
almost every side of our lives: our shopping habits, interests or what we eat. All of this is called
“big data”. In December, 2017, President Xi Jinping called for China to speed up its big data strategy (战略) to better serve social and economic (经济的) development. As a result, people’s
lives can be improved as well. He also asked for greater use of big data in areas like education, social security and transportation.
We have seen big data being used more often in China in the past few years. The role it plays in tourism (旅游业) is just one example. Many travelers today like to share their
experiences with others on the Internet. All the data that travelers share online is helping the tourism industry get a lot of information. After the data is analyzed (分析), these tour sights can
know about travelers’ needs better. In this way, services will be improved, which is helpful to the development of the whole industry. As a result, travelers can expect better tours in the future.
Moreover, big data is also an important growth tool for economic development. With growth rate of 30 percent every year, sales of big data industry in China will reach one trillion yuan yearly by 2020. Having so many good influences, big data is sure to be seen more and more in China.

C. take a taxi without paying for it D. make better decisions in business
35. Data from travelers is analyzed in order to .
A. share travelling experiences online B. expect better travelers in the future
C. improve services of the tour sights D. know the needs of tour sights better

Around 200 years ago, a well-known English poet called John Keats attacked science. He said that British scientist Isaac Newton had unweaved(拆解) the rainbow. Newton explained how light forms a rainbow. For Keats, this explanation meant rainbows could no longer be beautiful. This is just one example of many. We often hear people talk of problems with science, or say that it is boring. Some people, like Keats, also say that science takes away the beauty of the world. But is this fair?
First of all, science helps us get things done. We need to study science to produce certain kinds of people. After all, where would we be without engineers and doctors? When you are studying science in school, remember that one day you might be using that knowledge to build a bridge, or save a life. Next time you use your phone to send a message, remember that this is possible thanks to science. When Keats criticized(批判) Newton, the very paper he wrote on was created through science.
Beyond helping society and getting things done, science also makes us think in a certain way. It asks us to believe things only through evidence. It teaches us never to trust our assumptions(假设). It teaches us that sometimes, the truth is stranger than fiction.
When you study science, remember what it means. Science has changed the world, and it can change you too. Humans once looked up at rainbows, and said that they were beautiful. Science explained them, and they were no longer recondite to us.
But discovery never stops. Through science, we can find new rainbows: mysteries that lie beyond the stars themselves.
38. Why did John Keats criticize Newton around 200 years ago?
A. Because he was angry that Newton didn’t like rainbows.
B. Because he didn’t believe what Newton said about rainbows.
C. Because he thought Newton’s explanation took away the beauty of rainbow.
D. Because he thought rainbows would disappear because of Newton’s explanation.
39. Which of the following is the way science makes us think?
A. Believing things only through evidence. B. Believing what we see with our eyes.
C. Believing what is said in books. D. Believing things are beautiful.
40. The underlined word “recondite” in Paragraph 4 means “_______”.
A. secret B. famous C. beautiful D. powerful
41. The best title for the passage can be _______.
A. How Can We Get the Truth? B. The History of Natural Science
C. Why Should We Study Science? D. The Things We Need to Do for Science

Imagine you walk into a store. Strangely enough, you see no staff (店员) inside. You pick up things and prepare to wait in line and pay. But even more oddly, there is no cashier at all. So what has happened to this store?
Well, you may have entered Tao Café, a cashless store created by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. In July, the public got to see the store for the first time at Alibaba’s Taobao Maker Festival in Hangzhou.
The 200-square-meter store sells drinks, fast food and snacks. It can hold up to 50 shoppers at a time. To enter and shop, people only need a smartphone with a Taobao app and an Alipay account (账户).
By scanning their Taobao QR code (二维码), shoppers are followed with cameras for facial recognition. The store has also digitalized (数字化) all goods and their placement on the shelves. So when shoppers pick up goods, the system will be able to “watch” and “remember” their selection.
When shoppers are ready to leave, they don’t wait in line to pay. Instead, they go through two checkout doors. Then the bills will be paid with a Taobao account connected to Alipay.
According to Alibaba, the checkout machines can recognize goods even when shoppers put them in pockets or bags. So it is almost impossible to steal things from the store.
Tao Café is not the only cashless store in China. A 24-hour convenience store with no staff called BingoBox opened in Shanghai in June. To enter the store, shoppers scan a QR code on WeChat or Alipay. But unlike the Tao Café, they have to scan another QR code to leave the BingoBox.
42. The underlined word “oddly” means “__________”.
A. strangely B. surprisingly C. importantly D. helpfully
43. To buy things from Tao Café, you need to have all of the following EXCEPT __________.
A. a smartphone B. a Taobao app C. an Alipay account D. two QR codes
44. What are paragraphs 4 and 5 mainly about?
A. How to check out in Tao Café. B. Why Tao Café needs cameras.
C. How the system in Tao Café works. D. When the bills are paid in the store.
45. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. The elders would enjoy shopping in Tao Café.
B. Lots of things will be lost in the cashless store.
C. Shopping at BingoBox is the most convenient.
D. It saves people much time to shop at Tao Café.

Many Chinese students are good at English grammar, but their spoken English is so poor that they are afraid to speak in class or have a talk with others. There may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to express themselves clearly because of a limited(有限的)vocabulary. The useful way is to enlarge their vocabulary. However, you can still communicate with others with a limited vocabulary, if you are active. Others will understand you with the help of your body language.
Second, they are worried about making mistakes. Because they are shy and nervous, sometimes they may make mistakes easily. Yet we should know what we aim at is FLUENTCE(流利) not ACCURACY(精确) when speaking. So we should speak as quickly and well as we can, even though sometimes we may use a wrong word or tense(时态), but it doesn’t matter because others will still understand you.
The third reason is that they don’t pay enough attention to listening to what others are saying. So while you are speaking, you can't find the suitable topic or words to say. You have one mouth but two ears! What you hear is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are passive(被动的) language learners. They just sit there waiting for speaking chances, and don't actively look for chances to improve their spoken English. All they can get is to accept the fact that their English remains poor.
“Practice makes perfect". So please be active from now on, try to catch every chance to speak wherever you go.
