At first, I was a bit perturbed. From all that I had heard about cats being selfish creatures. I wondered if I would be able to deliver the goods. I had been asked to stay at the cat-owners’ place for the fortnight. The first day, all three, Mercedes, Mio and Casper, seemed to be suspicious(怀疑)of me. I fed them, disposed of their litter and got to work. Soon, however, they began to look forward to my returning, and would mew happiness hearing the key turn in the door-lock. As our familiarity grew, I began to playfully bid goodnight to the cats, sometimes adding aloud in Swedish that I had to wake up at 7:00 a.m. I forgot to set the alarm on most nights, but faced no problems, because at exactly 7:00 a.m. —no exaggerations here—I would hear the sounds of gentle mewing and scratching outside my bedroom door. Then, there was one evening, when I felt a bit under the weather. Sitting on the sofa, mentally worn out and physically exhausted, I stared blankly into space, when a gentle tapping landed on my cheek. I found Casper standing on the sofa’s armrest peering into my eyes. He seemed to be asking me to cheer up, switch off for the evening and look forward to a better tomorrow. On the evenings of the last few days, all three cats began to rush over and sit close to me on the sofa and snooze against my feet or on my lap. They knew perhaps that our time together was nearing its end and that they would not see me again. They all came over to the door when I left the next morning with my things packed. They just stood there and mewed for a while, and as I walked around the street bend, they hopped on to the window watching me go.1. What does the underlined word “perturbed” mean in the first paragraph?A. excited. B. upset. C. worried. D. confident.2. How did the author get familiar with the cats?A. By taking them out. B. By talking to themC. By feeding them. D. By taking care of them.3. How did the author understand Casper’s tapping?A. The cat was asking to go out. B. The cat was playing with him.C. The cat was trying to comfort him. D. The cat was reminding him of bedtime.BAfternoon tea, the most typical of English customs, is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. The custom of drinking tea became popular in England during the 1660s thanks to King Charles II and his wife, and it was not until the mid-19th century that the concept of “afternoon tea” first appeared. Afternoon tea was introduced by Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. At that time lunch was taken early but the evening meal was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, leaving a long period of time between the two meals. The Duchess would become hungry in the afternoon, so she asked that tea and cake be brought to her room around four o’clock. This became a habit of hers and later she began inviting friends to join her. This palace tea party was such a success that it soon spread to London and other places in UK as a fashionable social event. During the 1880’s, upper-class women would dress up for their afternoon tea, also known as “low tea” because tea was taken while sitting in low, comfortable chairs or sofas. While Low Tea was largely a game for the upper class, “high tea” was a necessary meal for working class families. During the second half of the Victorian Period, working families would return home late tired and exhausted. As the most important meal of the day, the table would be set with meats, bread, butter, cheese and of course, a pot of good, strong tea to lift their spirits. Because it was eaten at a high, dining table, it was called “high” tea. To experience the best of the afternoon tea tradition, treat yourself with a trip to one of London’s finest hotels. There are also a wide selection of old-fashioned tearooms offering afternoon tea experience. We provide very British afternoon tea experience trips during your stay in London. Just tell your tour guide when you want to taste the culture and we will arrange everything for you with a very reasonable charge. It’ll be a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t miss it.4. She wanted to spread tea culture in UK.5. What do we know about high tea?A. It was a game for the upper class. B. It was started by Queen Victoria.C. It was an occasional social activity. D. It was highly important to working class.6. Which of the following statement is NOT true according to the text?A. Low tea was mostly enjoyed by upper-class ladies.B. What’s the main purpose of this passage?A. To explain the origin of afternoon tea. B. To advertise for tea experience trips.C. To honor the tradition of drinking tea. D. Graduation is when most graduates take their first baby steps toward their chosen career. Yet many British students face a striking dilemma when they approach this stage. The highly competitive market means companies can afford to offer low-paying and even non-paying internships(实习)and work placements to the overabundance of ex-students seeking employment. With heavy student debt weighing down on their shoulders, graduates feel anxiety, so the future of working for nothing isn’t attractive. Their solution is to secure a job, which is unrelated to their study, yet that guarantees a regular income. A recent survey by the New College of the Humanities found that only half of all UK graduates were working in a field related to their degree after leaving university. What’s more, one in three graduates ticked financial reasons for switching jobs. “With the recent economic climate and a number of new growing industries, the traditional career path has gone forward into more of a long and winding road, said Swatee Jasoria, director of professional development at the college, to The Independent. While postgraduate study remains a popular choice (24 percent of final year students aimed to go on to further study), many of those hoping to dive into the labor pool face the graduate dilemma: earn an internship that’ll open up the pathway to your chosen career, without pay; or set your early career aside while settling for an unrelated job, with the security of a guaranteed income.8. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?A. With high expectation, working for nothing isn’t an attractive choice for British students.B. The highly competitive market makes graduates struggling with employment seeking.C. Most of UK graduates were taking up jobs related to the majors after leaving university.D. Graduates in the UK choose to work only for the heavy debt weighing down on their shoulders.9. What’s the striking dilemma that many British students have to face?A. High-paying jobs with long work time or relaxing jobs with low pay.B. To go for a further study after graduation or to go for a job.C. A better future career currently without pay or an unrelated job with a steady income.D. To choose a traditional career or to choose a new growing industry.10.
