Nrth Americans value independence, and Eurpeans value tgetherness. I never fully understd that steretype until tw mnths ag, when I left Canada fr a 4-mnth perid in a lab in France. On my first day, Pierre, a Ph.D. student, tapped me n my shulder and asked: “Cffee?" I ndded and fllwed him t the cmmn rm, where ther grad students were filing in. I sat there, cautiusly sipping the bitter liquid and trying hard nt t reveal my uncultured tastes, while lab chatter filled the air.
Cffee breaks are a ceremnial part f lab culture here. The chatter smetimes turns t serius scientific tpics. But mstly, the meet-ups ffer a chance t wind dwn, t share stries abut life inside and utside the lab and t sympathize with peple wh understand what yu're ging thrugh.
The lighthearted atmsphere and sense f cmmunity is a welcme cntrast t my life in Canada, where I spent mst f my wrkdays in islatin. I went int the lab each mrning with set gals fr my day. At lunch, I'd keep my eyes glued t my cmputer while I fed frkfuls f salad int my muth, trying t pwer thrugh my t-d list. Fr 9 mnths, I struggled t figure ut why I culdn't exactly cpy the results f anther study. I didn't want t truble my advisr t much. I was als hesitant t ask my labmates fr help.
Hw much we were missing! Researchers need cmmunity because gd ideas dn't just cme frm reading literature and thinking deep thughts. It's helpful t bunce ideas ff thers, and, t have a venue t share the day-t-day ups and dwns f life.
Wuld cffee breaks have slved all my prblems? Prbably nt. But I think sharing ideas with my peers wuld have helped slve my research dilemma. My time in France has taught me that it's imprtant t create space fr rganic cnversatins abut lab life. A scientist's life can feel islating, but it's nt necessarily s when yu're cnnected t a supprtive cmmunity.
    24. Hw did the authr feel when he drank cffee fr the first time in France?
    A. A little nervus B. Very happy.
    C. Smewhat excited. D. Quite curius.
    25. What des Paragraph 2 mainly talk abut?
    A. Cultural ceremnies in France. B. Varius tpics f the chatter.
    C. The benefits f cffee breaks. D. Lab culture in French style.
    26. What was the authr's life like back in Canada?
    A. Cmfrtable and fulfilled. B. Busy and lnely.
    C. Tense but satisfactry. D. Bring but healthy.
    27. Why des the authr write this passage?
    A. T intrduce the cffee break in Eurpe.
    B. T explain the difference between cultures.
    C. T recall his persnal experience in France.
    D. T cnvey the imprtance f a supprtive circle.

A rbt with a sense f tuch may ne day feel "pain, bth its wn physical pain and sympathy fr the pain f its human cmpanins. Such tuchy-feely rbts are still far ff, but advances in rbtic tuch-sensing are bringing that pssibility clser t reality.
Sensrs set in sft, artificial skin that can detect bth a gentle tuch and a painful strike have been hked up t a rbt that can then signal emtins, Asada reprted February 15 at the annual meeting f the American Assciatin fr the Advancement f Science. This artificial “pain nervus system," as Asada calls it, may be a small building blck fr a machine that culd ultimately experience pain. Such a feeling might als allw a rbt t“sympathize” with a human cmpanin's suffering.
Asada, an engineer at Osaka University, and his clleagues have designed tuch sensrs that reliably pick up a range f tuches. In a rbt system named Affett, an realistic lking child's head, these tuch and pain signals can be cnverted t emtinal facial expressins.
A tuch-sensitive, sft material, as ppsed t a rigid metal surface, allws richer interactins between a machine and the wrld, says neurscientist Kingsn Man f the University f Suthern Califrnia. Artificial skin “allws the pssibility f engagement in truly intelligent ways".
Such a system, Asada says, might ultimately lead t rbts that can recgnize the pain f thers, a valuable skill fr rbts designed t help care fr peple in need, the elderly, fr instance.
But there is an imprtant distinctin between a rbt that respnds in a predictable way t a painful strike and a rbt that's able t cmpute an internal feeling accurately, says Damasi, a neurscientist als at the University f Suthern Califrnia. A rbt with sensrs that can detect tuch and pain is “alng the lines f having a rbt, fr example, that smiles when yu talk t it," Damasi says. ‘It's a device fr cmmunicatin f the machine t a human." While that's an interesting develpment, “it's nt the same thing" as a rbt designed t cmpute sme srt f internal experience, he says.
    28. What d we knw abut the “pain nervus system”?
    A. It is named Affett by scientists. B. It is a set f cmplicated sensrs.
C.It is able t signal different emtins. D. It cmbines sensrs and artificial skin.

    B. Rbts can talk t human beings.
C Rbts can cmpute internal feelings
    D. Rbts can detect pains and respnd accrdingly.
    31. What can be the best title f the text?
    A. Machines Becme Emtinal
    B. Rbts Inch t Feeling Pain
    C. Human Feelings Can Be Felt
    D. New Devices Tuch Yur Heart

On a scale f O t 10., I'd say my happiness ranks at abut 6. I'm glad t knw I'm a 6, because, as a famus management saying puts it, “Yu can't manage what yu dn't measure." If yu want t imprve an aspect f yur life, yu need t be able t assess prgress tward yur gal - and that means measuring it.
The gal f this clumn is t help yu manage and imprve yur happiness. A number f peple have asked me whether quantitative happiness measures are really accurate and reliable - and it's a reasnable questin. S let's take a lk behind the curtain. But nt just fr intellectual curisity; as yu will see, understanding the measurement f happiness can itself make yu better at imprving yur wn well-being - and avid sme critical errrs.
The best methd scientists have t understand with cnfidence hw smething affects smething else is a randmized, cntrlled trial. Think f the tests currently under way t find a vaccine fr COvID-19. They take a lng time because the drug cmpanies with trial vaccines are cnducting experiments that randmly assign peple t a treatment grup they get the vaccine) and a cntrl grup (they get a placeb), and then waiting t seif the drug is effective and safe by cmparing the tw grups after enugh time has passed.
In the research n happiness, this usually isn't pssible. Want t knw if peple are truly happiest in Denmark, as sme studies suggest, and test it with a randmized experiment? Yu wuld need t randmly take tw grups ut f their hmes, mve ne grup t Cpenhagen, and the ther t, say, Daytn, Ohi- but make sure they think it might be Cpenhagen and never get the truth. Fllw up a few years later t see wh is happiest. Obviusly, that' s ridiculus. S with randmized cntrlled trials largely nt available t them, happiness researchers instead rely n self-reprted happiness surveys, where large grups f peple annymusly reprt their levels f life satisfactin. Then, the researchers use fairly cmplex statistical techniques t mimic(模拟)a cntrlled experiment in rder t shw hw different aspects f peple's lives affect - r at least are assciated with 一 their happiness.
    32. What des the underlined wrd “it" in Paragraph I prbably refer t?
    A.An aspect f life. B. One's gal. C. Happiness. D. Prgress.
    33. Why is the test f CvID-19 vaccine mentined in Paragraph 3?
    A. T intrduce a latest medical breakthrugh.
    B. T shw the difficulty in finding the vaccine.
    C. T illustrate the prcess f randmized experiments.
    D. T prve the impssibility f randmized researches n happiness
Why is it hard t cnduct research n happiness with randmized experiments?
    A. The experiment takes a lng time.
    B. It is difficult t analyze the data cllected.
C.It is impssible t carry ut the prcess strictly.
    D. The subjects are unwilling 1 share their feelings
    35. Where is this text taken frm?
    A. A magazine. B. A diary. C. A science reprt. D.A textbk.

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选 项。
Open a bk by any philspher and yu'll prbably read that a meaningful life has t invlve achieving smething difficult. That's because many philsphers are perfectinists when it cmes t the meaning f life. It's nt just philsphers, either. Perfectinism is ne f the main reasns peple tend t believe their lives are meaningless. 36 If they aren't ding smething abslutely amazing, then life has n meaning.
37 S the cnclusin is bvius: mst lives are meaningless. Right? Nt really. Dig a little deeper, and perfectinism falls apart. Actually yu dn't need t be a perfectinist abut the meaning f life. Life wuld be fantastic if everything was perfect. But smething desn't need t be perfect t be fantastic. 38
Fr ne, it' s pretty incnsistently applied mst f the time.Peple wh are perfectinists abut the meaning f life ften dn't apply it t ther areas f their lives. 39 Fr example, perfectinists dn't think they're a failure if they dn't get a hundred percent n every test. S isn't it als absurd t apply that kind f standard t the meaning f life?
It desn't end there. The demands that perfectinists place n themselves and thers are actually really unrealistic. And that means they can nly lead t disappintment. 40 It wuld be similarly dd t call ne f yur friends a huge failure because he can't achieve as much in a day as Superman. But that's exactly the lgic perfectinism applies when it claims that ur lives have t be extrardinary in sme way t have meaning
    A. They see life as all-r-nthing.
    B. We dn't expect a dg t drive a car.
    C. This leads t lts f duble standards.
    D. Yu're unlikely t be satisfied with any result.
    E. And there are actually a few prblems with perfectinism.
    F. Hwever, mst f us aren't an Einstein r a Mther Teresa.
    G. They'd prbably dismiss the ideas like that as absurd, in fact.
