As we all know, the best way of learning a language is using it.The best way of learning English is talking in English as much as possible.Sometimes you'll get your words mixed up(混合)and people will not understand you.Sometimes people will say things too quickly and you can't understand them. But if you keep your sense of humor, you can always have a good laugh at the mistakes you make.Don’t be unhappy if people seem to be laughing at your mistakes. It’s better for people to laugh at your mistakes than to be angry with you, because they don't understand what you are saying. The most important thing for learning English is:“Don’t be afraid of making mistakes because everyone makes mistakes.”

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans, it is often considered friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!
    8. The writer of this passage must be ______.
    A. an American B. a Chinese
    C a professor D. a student
    9. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.
    B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.
    C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.
    D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.
    10. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______.
    A. warmly welcomed at the airport B. offered a ride to his home
    C. treated hospitably at his home D. treated to dinner in a restaurant
    11. A suitable title for this passage would probably be “______”.
    A. Friendships between Chinese B. Friendships between Americans
    C. Americans’ hospitality D. Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendships
    D
By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat? A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it's not only how much we eat, but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins and other nutrients that enter our body.
Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But raw vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene, the matter found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. “There is an idea that raw foods are always going to be better,” says Steven K. Clinton, a professor at Ohio State University. “For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful.”
A number of factors decide how the vegetables do good to people's health before they reach the table, including where and how they were grown and stored before being bought. No single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways.
Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling was better for carrots than frying or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook.
What cooked with the vegetables can also be important? When the vegetables were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them. Putting on some other things that make it taste better—a little salt—can make the food taste better.
    12. The writer mainly wants to tell us that ________.
    A. people should eat more vegetables B. the way people eat vegetables is important
    C. eating vegetables is good for us D. how much vegetables one should eat
    13. The people who eat the raw vegetables for a long time will ________.
    A. have the eyes problems B. have heart disease
    C. be in need of lycopene D. hate eating tomatoes
    14. The following decide how the vegetables do good to people EXCEPT ________.
    A. the place where the vegetables are grown B. the way how the vegetables are stored
    C. the way how the vegetables are prepared D. the price at which the vegetable are sold
    15. From the last paragraph, we can know ________.
    A. it's better to cook vegetables with the fat
    B. the more fat in the cooking, the fewer vegetables people will eat
    C. it's better to cook the vegetables without salt
    D. the fat will increase the nutrition of the vegetables

There was once a captain who loved money so much that he cheated his sailors at the end of every voyage and took their wages.

"I'm going to bed earlier tomorrow! "But no matter how we decide, there are still many chances that we break our promises.
This behavior is called" bedtime procrastination"(睡眠拖延症), and results from being short of self-control and our body clock.Bedtime procrastination is a common problem. According to a study, Among 2,400 people, 53 percent of them couldn't follow their sleeping time they had planned, delaying it at least twice a week. They delayed bedtime not because they liked to stay up late, but they couldn't stop doing some other things.
Accordingly,People who usually have trouble resisting temptations(抵制诱惑) and adhering to their intentions(坚持己见) are more likely to delay going to bed. However, scientists think being short of self-control is not the only problem. Our body clock also lays an important role when it comes to bedtime. In order to check the influence of the body clock on sleep, scientists studied the sleep patterns (t模式)of 108 people. It was found that those who got up late are more likely to delay their bedtime than those who woke up early every morning. And more surprisingly, night owls(夜猫子)would go to bed late at the very beginning of the weekday, even though they had to get up early for work and school. It's their special body clock that plays a part in delaying their bedtime.

The winter holiday is usually a good time to sleep in. But Gao Yuqi, a 14-year-old boy from Anhui, got up at 7: 00 am to run at least 2 kilometers every day during the holiday. In fact, this exercise was part of this homework.
Gao was not alone. Many schools across the country required students to exercise during the winter holiday. Part of the reason is that physical education test scores are now worth more on the senior high school entrance examination (中考). And the score is now worth up to 60 points. Because of this, Gao’s school now asks students to run when the weather is nice, and exercise indoors if it is bad. Students have to post (公布) exercise photos in their classes’ QQ groups. At the Golden Apple Jincheng No.1 Middle School in Chengdu, students have daily exercise plans. For example, they have to skip rope (跳绳) for two minutes and do three sets of sit-ups (仰卧起坐) each day. Their parents sign off (签名) on their plans when they finish exercising.
This has been a big challenge for many students, but has also helped to make exercise a bigger part of their lives. Many students like Gao used to hate running, but now they are able to run for over half an hour every day. They fell in love with exercise during the holiday.

Friends aren’t just fun to have around; they actually help your health. A recent study finds that people who have a larger group of friends in their life live longer than those with few friends by 22%.
Friends help you develop healthy habits. Friends can influence you to make good health changes in your life. Going out with the girls, for example, may mean you see their healthy choices at lunch and do the same. A night out with the boys may include basketball or running rather than sitting in front of the TV. We often think of friends as a group that we have fun with, but a good time can also mean improving your world in some way. This is especially true when you have a lot of friends around you who want you to live a long and healthy life.
Friends help us meet the challenges differently. Failures (失败) can cause many kinds of physical problems in our bodies, but friends can change the way we deal with them and help our emotional (情绪的) health, which in turn allows us to meet the challenges in a stronger way.
Friends help you find diseases earlier. Sometimes, a friend notices something unusual about one’s health that he or she hasn’t even realized. They can point it out and encourage their friends to see a doctor.
Friends want us to be around a long time. Friends are very important in our life.
33.What do we learn from the recent study?
    A. People who have many friends live a simple life.

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous;be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must trust one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, or enjoy, like our hobbies and your interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them you help your friend know you better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve . Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty. Generosity and understanding.
    24. Some friendships don’t last very long because .

I started to work as an editor for a travel magazine. I didn’t really mind the work, but I wanted something more challenging. My sister sent me some details for a position in a startup. The job was a seemingly perfect mix of my skills and interests, so I jumped at it.
However, soon after I joined the company, its model changed to focus on education, and everything about my position changed. I was asked to take on the completely different roles of selling contents to teachers and training people. I had no experience in sales, training or education. I felt more a little outside my comfort zone.
I knew I wanted to grow as an individual and make a serious effect on the company. I told myself that everything feels overwhelming(巨大的)at first and I should at least try. In a way, I felt like I didn’t have a choice. I knew jumping out of the nest was the right thing for me, even though it felt pretty awful.
I was lucky to be surrounded by very helpful people, both at work and at home. My boss never asked if I thought I could do it; she asked if I was interested in trying.
I spent hours researching my company’s products. I asked lots of questions and spoke to so many teachers that there were soon more good experiences than difficult ones. I looked for chances to put in extra effort. The more I did, the better I felt.
Over time, I discovered that the job was something I could do and liked doing. It was unbelievably rewarding to see the company grow. I also learned it’s important to take risks and accept new opportunities, even when you’re not sure if you’ll do well. I don’t think there’s anything worse than failing to try. I’m so glad I tried, and it surely paid off.
    28. Why did the author want to change her job?
    A. She got bored of her old boss.
    B. She followed her sister’s advice.
    C. She was paid too little at her old job.
    D. She intended to challenge something new.
    29. How did the author feel after she entered the new company?
    A. Excited. B. Stressed.
    C. Curious. D. Comfortable.
    30. The author could finally handle her job mainly because________.
    A. her boss trusted her to try
    B. she knew she would do well
    C. she was hardworking and made a lot of effort
    D. people around her helped her solve the challenge
    31. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
    A. To tell readers that failure is the mother of success.
    B. To warn about the risks and challenges when changing jobs.
    C. To expose risks and challenges in a small and newly founded company.
    D. To encourage readers to take on challenges and turn risks into opportunities.
    D
Long school holidays help students clear their heads, relax a little and stretch their brains in different ways.
Traditionally, schooling schedules have long been based more on the needs of society than on education strategies(策略). For example, in Iceland it was traditionally arranged to allow children to help out with harvest. Other countries have long summer vacations because it is simply too hot to study. In other areas where religion plays an important role in the holiday season, the religion calendar then calls for the break, so that students can have enough time to participate in the religious ceremonies(仪式) and traditions of seasonal holidays.
There are some obvious advantages to a vacation that lasts longer. Families who live a long distance from relatives are able to travel together, sometimes across the ocean, in order to connect with their loved ones. Even if there is no visiting family far away, a long holiday is a great opportunity for kids to interact with the people. From an educational point of view, a child that is able to experience another culture can gain valuable language, history, and social skills.
Long school holidays are also needed in schools that have become overly academic and too exam-focused in recent years, which requires a considerably longer holiday break from such a “marathon pumping (灌输) of knowledge,” and it makes great sense!
Great psychologists, like Freud and Piaget, have stressed play’s central role in the formation of fully-rounded (全面发展的) individuals, so the long holiday achieves this by allowing students to explore the world outside school. The students get to participate in activities that would be difficult to do during a normal school term.
As a consequence, long school holiday can be quite useful to our students!
    32. What traditionally determines the arrangement of school holidays?
    A. Local needs. B. Cultural activities.
    C. Religious customs. D. Academic performance.
    33. Which is one of the advantages of long holidays?
    A. Students run away from exams.
    B. Family bonds are strengthened.
    C. Fewer courses are required at school.
    D. Children can learn science and history.
    34. Freud and Piaget may probably agree that ______ .
    A. holiday activities are necessary
    B. schools need longer holidays
    C. play is more important than learning
    D. students should travel around the world
    35. What is the best title of the passage?
    A. Traditional School Holidays
    B. Activities for Long Holidays
    C. Benefits of Long Holidays
    D. Advice from Psychologists
