Two-year-old Samantha Savitz is deaf and loves interacting with her neighbors, so they all learned sign language in order to communicate with her better. The little girl is just so charming and adorable that it’s hard not to want to be able to have simple conversations with her.
In the United States, about two to four of every 1,000 people are functionally deaf—about 2 million people. Around 28 million Americans, 10% of the population, have some degree of hearing loss. Around 500, 000 deaf people in the country use American Sign Language (ASL), and it's the third most commonly used language in the US; many hearing people are also fluent in ASL. With so many people using ASL, it's only right that Savitz's neighbors learn the language, not only for her but also to be able to communicate with other deaf people.
Located at the end of Islington Road in Newton, Massachusells, this little neighborhood is absolutely charmed by one little girl. Savitz is a super engaging girl, and she loves interacting with people in her community. She is delighted when they are able to sign with her. However, she gets really sad when they can't understand her when she tries to communicate with them. Because of this, Savitz's neighbors collectively hired an instructor for ASL classes. With the help of their instructor, Rhys McGovern, the neighbors are able to help Savitz feel a sense of belonging.
What the neighbors did for this little girl is wonderful because she will grow up being well-adjusted in society .Instead of feeling separated because no one outside of her family will understand her, Savitz will be accustomed to constantly interacting with different people. Her family is so thankful that they are fortunate to have such caring and compassionate neighbors. Savitz calls her neighbors “friends,” and accurately so.
Other than speaking with the darling of their neighborhood, the residents of Islington Road will also be able to communicate with any other deaf person they encounter. “We are really enjoying the whole process, not only the learning of ASL, but the learning together,” says McNeil, one of Savitz’s neighbors. “It's made our neighborhood a closer place.”
24.Why does the author present the figures in paragraph 2?
A.To recommend people to learn ASL. B.To show why the ASL class is appealing.
C.To stress how terrible the life of the deaf is. D.To account for Savitz's neighbors’ learning ASL.
25.How does little Savitz feel when her neighbors are able to communicate with her?
    A.Proud. B.Pleased. C.Confused. D.Surprised.
26.What does Rhys McGovern do for Savitz?
A.He teaches her neighbors ASL. B.He guides her to interact with her neighbors.
C.He hired an instructor for her neighbors. D.He called on her neighbors to help her.
27.What lesson can we learn from the story?
A.Many heads are better than one.
B.Help others and be happy with yourself.
C.You can't hide the world from your next neighbor.
D.The poor are good to themselves and the good for the world.

Remember when your mom told you not to eat too many candy bars or sweets because they can cause tooth decay (蛀牙)? However, it turns out that chocolate can be more salutary to your teeth than you might expect. Recent studies show that chocolate can effectively fight against tooth decay, as if we need another excuse to eat chocolate.
Chocolate offers protection like fluoride, a main ingredient in most household toothpastes. Not only does chocolate protect our teeth, but it can do so very effectively. Studies show that chocolate has compounds that provide strong protection for teeth. One of the compounds in chocolate, CBH, is shown to protect even more effectively than fluoride.
Tooth decay happens when bacteria work to turn sugar into acids in our mouth. This is why eating foods with high sugar content can lead to more tooth decay. The compounds in chocolate, however, are anti-bacteria and can fight against bacteria in your mouth. The CBH compound in particular also works to strengthen tooth enamel (牙釉质), and protects against tooth decay.
Does this mean you can cat as much chocolate as you want without worrying about your teeth? It depends on the types of chocolate that you like. The protective effect of chocolate is most effective when you chew on cocoa beans. Of course, this option is not very appealing to; most people. A more tasty option is to choose dark chocolate with little sugar content, ideally no more than 6 to 8 grams per serving. For other types of chocolate with higher sugar content, the effect will be lessened. However, because of the protective compounds, it is still better for your teeth than other sweets and desserts containing the same amount of sugar.
28.The word “salutary” in paragraph 1 means?
    A.Beneficial. B.Harmful. C.Familiar. D.Useless.
29.What can we know about the compound CBH in chocolate?
A.It can help chocolate cure tooth decay.
B.It can effectively stop teeth from decaying.
C.It may protect teeth better than toothpastes do.
D.It may soon replace most household toothpastes.

30.How does chocolate fight tooth decay?
A.By breaking down acids. B.By building up compounds.
C.By fixing up tooth enamel. D.By fighting against bacteria.
31.What's the main idea of the text?
A.Chocolate plays the role of toothpaste.
    B.Chocolate protects against tooth decay.
C.Chocolate is the best choice for teeth protection.
D.Chocolate is healthier to teeth than other sweets.
    D

M: I might be asked to speak as soon as everyone sits down for dinner. In that case, I guess I’ll be pretty hungry when I get home.
W: Do you have any idea what time you’ll be finished?
    M: No.
W: Well, I’ll have something ready for you to eat. Can you catch the last bus? Or maybe you should take a taxi.
M: Don’t worry, dear. That’s already been taken care of. The Computer Society is sending a car for me. It’s picking me up at the office at six and will bring me home after the meeting.
    Text 10
M: Pedal Power is a small charity based mainly in the UK. At Pedal Power, they collect second-hand bikes in the UK and send them to some of the poorest regions in the world. When they distribute bikes overseas, they don’t give them away for free. In order to continue operating they need to have a constant supply of bikes which they send out every six months. In August 2000, they simply ran out of money. It was a terrible situation. Fortunately, in October 2001 they won an Enterprise Award which helped them enormously.
Dan Pearman is the founder of Pedal Power. He got the idea of exporting bicycles to developing countries while he was in Ecuador. Dan Pearman went there in 1993 and he joined a voluntary organization. Where Dan Pearman lived in Ecuador was a rural area. His neighbor had the only bicycle in the village, whereas everyone else walked everywhere. His neighbor’s business was very successful. For years Dan Pearman couldn’t understand why. Then he realized having a bike meant his neighbor could reach anywhere he liked without much trouble. Other local carpenters could only accept jobs nearby, so no matter how skilled they were, they could never do as many jobs as his neighbor. When he returned to the UK in 1998, he started planning Pedal Power.
