Every superhero, no matter how small, needs a cape. That was Robyn Rosenberger’s motivation when she started sewing superhero capes for kids with cancer, heart defects, and other serious diseases. It all began when she was making a cape as a birthday present for her nephew. Rosenberger heard of a girl named Brenna who was battling a potentially deadly skin condition called harlequin ichthyosis. Anyone suffering from what she was going through had to be tough. “I had an aha moment (顿悟),” Rosenberger says. “Brenna was a superhero! She needed a cape.” So Rosenberger sent her one, and Brenna’s mother was delighted.
Rosenberger found ten more kids online and sent out ten more capes. Before long, she quit her job at a software company to dedicate herself full time to tinysuperheroes.com, a website where people can buy hand-made capes for brave kids facing illness and disability.
Since 2013, Rosenberger and her small paid staff have sent more than 12,000 handmade capes to kids in all 50 states and 15 other countries. The capes come in pink, blue, purple, or red and can be decorated with the child’s initials or specialized patches, including a heart, a rocket, or a lightning bolt. One recipient was eight-month-old Gabe, who was born with a cleft palate (腭裂), which causes distinct facial features. Rosenberger sent him a red cape with a bright yellow G in the center. It was a hit.
Gabe is now a fixture on the company’s social media posts. “The Tiny Superhero community has been a wonderful connection to have,” says Gabe’s mom, Kate Glocke. In fact, two years later, “We still bring Gabe’s cape with us to every hospital appointment.”
    24. Rosenberger started making capes because she _____________.
    A. wanted to set a good example to sick kids
    B. hoped to encourage kids with serious diseases
    C. aimed to cure the kids with serious diseases
    D. made an attempt to make money online

    26. Which of the following capes are NOT available?
    A. Purple capes with the child’s initials.

“Human activity has wiped out two-thirds of the world’s wildlife since 1970,” CNN reported on September 10, 2020. Later that month, the Guardian reported that “40 percent of the world’s plant species are at risk of extinction”. Stanford biologist Paul Ehrlich and his colleagues argued that “the ongoing sixth mass extinction may be the most serious environmental threat to the persistence of civilization”. Around the same time, the Daily Mail warned that “human civilization stands a 90 percent chance of collapse (崩溃) within decades due to deforestation”.
These horrible calculations and projections come from authoritative-sounding reports issued by international agencies, conservation groups, and peer-reviewed scientific journals. But is the future of wild nature and human civilization really so poor?
Data from uncontroversial mainstream sources strongly indicate that both humanity and the natural world are likely to be flourishing (繁荣) rather than collapsing at the end of this century. Humanity is becoming an urban species, and that’s good for the environment, since urban dwellers (居民) generally use less electricity, produce less globe-warming carbon dioxide, and have smaller land footprints than people living in the countryside. By 2100, it is estimated that 85 percent of people will be city dwellers, which would leave only 1.2 billion still living in the countryside. That means more space for the wildlife and less pollution from the agriculture.
The global tree-covering area increased by 865,000 square miles between 1982 and 2016. The researchers found that gains in forest area in the mild, subtropical and northern climatic zones are offsetting (抵消) declines in the tropics. The Maryland researchers owe much of that increase to “natural afforestation on abandoned agricultural land”. “Furthermore, forests in mountainous regions are expanding as climate warming enables trees to grow at higher altitudes,” they added.
Humanity does face big environmental challenges in the coming century. But the scientific and economic evidence shows that most of the trends are positive or can be turned in positive direction by human wisdom. Rather than an age of extinction, the 21st century promises to be an era of environmental renewal.
    28. Why does the author mention the reports in Paragraph 1?
    A. To give examples. B. To introduce the topic.
    C. To make a contrast. D. To support his opinion.
    29. What will happen according to Paragraph 3?
    A. No one will choose to live in the countryside.
    B. More space will be available for the wildlife.
    C. Neither humanity nor the natural world will develop quickly.
    D. Urban residents will do more walking than those in the countryside.
    30. Which of the following statements will the researchers agree with about forest area?
    A. The expanding and disappearance in forest area aren’t evenly matched.
    B. The forest area in the mild, tropic and northern zones is increasing.
    C. There are more forests in mountainous regions due to the climate warming.
    D. The plan of “natural afforestation on abandoned agricultural land” is unfavorable.
    31. What might be the best title of the passage?
    A. The Bright Future of Humanity.
    B. The Challenges in the Coming Century.
    C. Better Environment, Better Future of Human.
    D. 21st Century: An Era of Environmental Renewal.

    D
Last year, I went through every high school senior’s nightmare: I was refused from all the colleges I applied to. It’s not that I was a bad student. I had a narrow vision, applying only to some key schools. So when I got refused, I got into a panic. I thought there was only one path to success, and I wasn’t on it. While all my friends were picking out twin extra-long sheets, I was left wondering what kind of future I could have.
When my panic faded, I signed in the community college. I wasn’t excited. I imagined community college classrooms with incompetent teachers that taught their students to sleep. I was so wrong. My art history professor was so poetic, and her lectures felt spoken word. My classmates were intelligent and came from all walks of life — still figuring things out like me.
I decided to give myself a year of experiment. Aside from general education, I took a range of classes. I know it seems like a random kind of classes, but it allowed me to know what I like and don’t like. I used to have this idea that I had to rush in order to achieve a certain level of success by a certain age, but a year of community college has taught me to slow down, and to recognize that things take time to adjust. I still hope to transfer to a four-year university next year, but I’ll be going about it as a more mature person.
Being around students from all walks of life has made me realize that I’m not late in the game at all. There’s more than one way to get where you want to be.
    32. What caused the author’s “high school senior’s nightmare”?
    A. He was rejected by the colleges he applied to.
    B. He didn’t do well in some subjects at school.
    C. He only took some key schools into consideration.
    D. He got confused about which school to apply to.
    33. What does the underlined part mean in Paragraph 1?
    A. The author’s friends have extra sheets.
    B. The future for the author’s friends is clear.
    C. The way to success is long for the author’s friends.
    D. The author’s friends have many choices.
    34. Why was the author unhappy in the community college at first?
    A. His art history professor was extremely expressive.
    B. He didn’t like studying with students from all walks of life.
    C. He thought the teachers in the community college had poor ability.
    D. He learned students in the community college always slept in class.
    35. What did the author learn from his experience in the community college?
    A. There’s no need to hurry to achieve certain success.
    B. A year of experiment is not worthwhile for him at all.
    C. The way to success is to transfer to a four-year university.
    D. It’s a waste of time being around students from all walks of life.

Do you ever have months when you struggle to keep your money under control? There are many reasons why we overspend. It could be because we aren’t aware of our true spending habits. 36
    37
When you head out to the mall, take only the amount of cash you’ll probably need and leave the credit cards at home. By doing this, you avoid the temptation (诱惑) of using the card for a spur of the moment purchase, which is often the fastest way to find yourself in debt.
    Start using a budget.
38 If you aren’t sure about how much you take home each month and how much your expenses add up to, you’ll continuously fall into the trap of buying all the things you think you can afford, only to get a rude awakening at the end of the month when your bank account isn’t looking too great.
    Track your spending.
Those small things you buy on a regular basis can really add up by the end of the month. 39 By following this simple step, you’ll also learn to respect your money more.

    A. Switch to cash only.
    B. Make a list of what to buy.

    D. Here are some tips on how you can avoid overspending and keep your money in check.

W: Sure, but biking will be faster. (1)
    Text 2
M: Hmm. It looks like this tooth will have to be pulled out. Do you eat a lot of sweet snacks?
W: I did when I was at school. I used to like sweet things.
M: I’m afraid you are paying the price with tooth problems. (2)
    Text 3
W: Hello, there. What’s wrong with your leg?
M: I hurt my knee while chasing a dog away. I think it belongs to the people who live between your house and mine.
W: You mean the couple who just moved in last week? (3)
    Text 4
M: I can’t believe you are a grown-up now, Lucy. I remember you being born when I had just graduated from university. Now you’re getting married! (4)
W: Thank you for coming, Uncle Dave. It means a lot that you are here on my special day.
    Text 5
W: I’ll be home late. You’re on your own for dinner. There’s plenty of spaghetti to make. Just follow the directions.
M: I don’t know how to make dinner! Can’t you just give me some money to order food?
W: Tonight is a good night to learn then. (5)
    Text 6
W: Wow, that was so entertaining! (6) How come I had never heard of that before?
M: It is an old movie. (6) I had never heard of it before today, either. Obviously, you liked it.
W: It had a great story and awesome acting. Oh, and the music was so good!
M: Yes, the music was wonderful. But don’t you think there was a lot of unnecessary blood? (7)
W: That’s what makes it so realistic, though. So what is it next week?
    M: It’s a musical called Aida.
W: Great! Now we have something we can watch together again.
    Text 7
W: Hey, Jordan. Practicing basketball again? (8)
M: Yes. My uncle Charlie was just showing me a few of his moves from his high school days. (9)
W: Didn’t he almost turn professional?
M: Yeah. He played on the soccer team and the badminton team, too. (9) My coach said he was the best athlete he’d ever taught.
    W: Does he still play?
M: He plays on the weekends, and sometimes he helps me train a couple of times a week.
W: Do you think you will play in university?
M: Of course. But it’s not easy. I need an athletic scholarship. That means I have to practice seven days a week.
W: What do you work on recently? (10)
M: Using my left hand and bouncing the ball between my legs. (10) Here, I bet you can’t take the ball from me! (8)
M: So, you are from the UK? What is it like living in London? (12)
W: I don’t live in London. I live in Manchester.
M: Oh, I always think British people come from London.
W: No, I’ve only been to London three times in my life. I would be a tourist there like you. London is in the south. (12)
    M: So where is Manchester?
W: It’s in the north of England. So are Liverpool, Leeds, York and several other cities. In the middle are two cities: Birmingham and Coventry.
M: But the UK is small. Are those places different from each other?
W: They each have their own character. British people may look the same and dress the same, but there are lots of different accents. (13)
    M: Why so many?
W: Well, the UK consists of four different countries --- England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Plus, there are local accents, left over from the days when people didn’t travel very much.
    Text 9
M: Julie, our school’s planning committee has been asking about you. Where have you been?
W: I won’t be attending any more meetings. I told Mrs. Hall I don’t have the time to volunteer anymore.
M: That’s too bad. Did you get a job or something?
W: Not like a regular job.
    M: What do you mean?
W: Well, initially my dad wanted me to go out and find a job. (14) But I told him I didn’t think I would be able to balance school and work at the same time.
M: And what did he say?
W: He said if I started taking on more responsibility at home, he would pay me and let me use the family car. (14) (15) You know, like cooking, cleaning, that kind of stuff. (15)
    M: That’s not bad!
W: I know. I just thought it’s time to start forming some good life habits now, rather than later. In a couple of years, I’ll be in college living on my own. I’ll have no one to rely on but myself. (16)
M: Good for you. So what will you do with the money you will be making? (17)
W: Fortunately, my parents are giving me an old phone, so I don’t need to worry about that. I need a new laptop, though. (17)
    M: You’re so lucky!
    Text 10
Actor Jackie Chan’s mixture of fighting and comedy has made him a star. In 1954, he was born in Hong Kong. He began studying fighting and performance skills at seven. He became a star throughout Asia and went on to have hits around the world. He is also a film director and producer. When his parents moved to Australia, (18) seven-year-old Chan was left behind to study at the China Drama Academy, a Peking Opera school. For 10 years, he studied and obeyed strict rules. He appeared in his first film when he was eight. (19) On graduation in 1971, Chan found work in movies, including Fist of Fury starring Bruce Lee. After Lee’s death in 1973, Chan was thought likely to succeed him. But he was not a big success at that time, so he decided to create his own style. Later, he became the highest-paid actor in Hong Kong. In the 1980s, Chan tried his luck in Hollywood with little success. However, in 1995, Rumble in the Bronx became his first hit in North America. (20) He scored another hit with Rush Hour in 1998.

    A

根据第二段“show how much you appreciate her love of language and words with one of these book-themed cups for a Mother’s Day gift. You can choose from a good old fashioned library card”可知,你可以将带有图书卡片的图案的杯子送给喜欢读书的母亲。
根据第三段 “It dries quickly and resists wrinkles.”
倒数第二段中的the rapidly growing world of succulents可知,多肉植物如今很受欢迎。
    B

从第三段倒数第四行“…have smaller land footprints than …"
根据文中第四段最后一句话“Furthermore, forests in mountainous regions are expanding as climate warming enables trees to grow at higher altitudes.” The researchers found that gains in forest area in the mild, subtropical and northern climatic zones are offsetting declines in the tropics. The Maryland researchers owe much of that increase to “natural afforestation on abandoned agricultural land”.
从文章第二段和最后一段的最后一句话“Rather than an age of extinction, the 21s century promises...”
I had a narrow vision, applying only to some key schools.
I was left wondering what kind of future I could have,可知作者未来不定,而他的朋友都有其他的选择。
I thought community college classrooms with incompetent teachers that taught their students to sleep.
尤其倒数第2段“I used to have this idea that I had to rush in order to achieve a certain level of success by a certain age, but a year of community college has taught me to slow down, and to recognize that things take time to adjust.”

观察小标题结构,并根据下文“…take only the amount of cash” 以及“...avoid the temptation of using the card...”
也是下句 “By following this step…”

post
in return ;作为回报,in all 总共;in fact 事实上。
turn back回头,debate 辩论 call back 回电话,召回。
类似用法:a narrow escape。
根据语境“ … and was floating in the pool.” switch off 关掉。take off脱掉,起飞,腾飞。
gain on sb. or sth., e.g. The socialists are gaining on the conservatives in the opinion polls.
grab抓住( take hold of so as to seize or restrain or stop the motion of )
swim her heart out是非常形象的写法。
ceremony典礼;feast盛宴;celebration庆祝(a joyful occasion to mark some happy event); honor.
day after day “日复一日” ;from time to time “不时,偶尔”;once in a while “偶尔”等体现不出她当时的兴奋之情。
in my personal opinion,

    63. who/that 考查定语从句。
spend time (in) doing sth.

    1. would改为will。
    5. you改用yourself/yourselves。
    6. take前加to。 It’s rewarding to do sth.
that(指代another thing)与keep是被动关系,故用过去分词构成被动语态。
    8. long改为longer。
    9. a改为the。 on the whole“大体上”,是固定搭配。
    10. or改为and。
