    “Mst peple think thirteen is an unlucky number, but nt ur family,” my Dad always tld the stry. My fur brthers and sisters and I wuldn’t be here if he’d been led t any ther number.
    Back in 1941, Dad spent his Saturday nights at “The Nixn”, a dance hall n the crner f 52nd and Market streets in Philadelphia. He culd dance the Waltz and d the Jitterbug just as well as Fred Astaire. The girls dressed up and styled their hair like Ginger Rgers. Sme wre silver slippers, while the mre skilled dancers wre gld. In thse days, when a guy wanted t dance with a girl, he had t sign up fr a sng n her dance card ahead f time — and every guy wanted t sweep Peg Ostrich ff her feet.
    Dad was chatting with his friend when he first saw her walk int the dance hall, attractively beautiful, with dark brwn eyes, shulder length brwn hair and gld slippers. Dad waited in the crwd t sign her card, and they danced t “The Anniversary Waltz”. He fell in lve with her cmpletely. If nly he culd kiss her, just nce!
    New Year’s Eve was cming up. Maybe he culd hld Peg fr the midnight dance! Then he culd give her a New Year’s kiss. Dad spent every Saturday cunting sngs and figured ut which dance wuld fall n the magic mment — number thirteen. “That can’t be right,” Dad said t himself. “That’s bad luck!” Had he made a mistake? Shuld he sign up fr the twelfth r furteenth? What if he was t early, r t late? On New Year’s Eve, Dad ran t the dance hall, but Peg was already surrunded. By the time he gt t sign her dance card, nly ne chice remained — thirteen.
    At 11:55, Evelyn Jhnsn, the bandleader, called their sng. “Harvest Mn” began t play. Dad tk Peg’s hand. At that mment, he didn’t care if the sng lasted until midnight — he was happy just t dance with her. Then it happened. 10, 9, 8. . . The entire dance hall cunted dwn. 3, 2, 1… HAPPY NEW YEAR! Peg lked int his eyes, and Dad delivered the perfect New Year’s kiss.
    Mm and Dad started “ging steady” that night, which led t 44years f marriage, five children, fur grandchildren, and tw great-grandchildren — a grwing family that all began with ne “unlucky” number.

    When I pulled in next t him, he culdn’t believe it. “Hw did yu find me?!” he asked. “I’m nt sure, but I figured ut that yu are in the wrng city!” I shwed him the htel infrmatin, pulled up the right directins fr him, and after mre smiles, laughs and a handshake, we parted ways. Likely that we’ll never meet again, and that makes it all the mre sweet.
