When it cmes t sea rescue, speed is everything. Accrding t Science Daily, the best chance t find smene alive after a ship r airplane accident at sea is during the first six hurs. The prbability reduces sharply after that. Hwever, the tides and changing weather at sea – especially the unpredictable currents (洋流) – make it hard fr rescuers t lcate peple in time, resulting in hundreds f deaths every year.

Nw, scientists frm the Swiss Federal Institute f Technlgy (ETHRW) and the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MIT) have cme up with an algrithm (算法) that can quickly predict the lcatins t which peple flating in the cean will drift (漂流), speeding up search and rescue peratins at sea.

Currently, the mst cmmnly used algrithm in cean rescue is the “Lagrangian (拉格朗日算法)” apprach. But accrding t Thmas Peacck, a mechanical engineering prfessr at MIT, this apprach is nt precise enugh and significant errrs can accumulate (累积) in the prcess, leading the search team farther away frm the crrect lcatin.

The new algrithm, instead, uses the “Eulerian (欧拉算法)” apprach. The researchers believe that there are “hidden traps” in the cean – regins where currents temprarily cnverge and pull peple in, and t predict when and where these traps will frm is the key t rescue peratins. And this is exactly what the Eulerian apprach des: It interprets (诠释) the cean’s cmplex flws using mre advanced mdeling systems, allwing it t update its data quickly accrding t the ever-changing cean cnditins.

“We can think f these ‘traps’ as mving magnets (磁铁), attracting a set f cins thrwn n a table. The Lagrangian trajectries (轨迹) f cins are very uncertain, yet the strngest Eulerian magnets predict the cin psitins ver shrt times,” Mattia Serra, frmer PhD student at ETHRW, tld MIT News.

T test hw effective the new apprach is, the team did an experiment by setting manikins (人体模型) at sea frm different lcatins and using the algrithm t predict their drifting paths while mnitring their real-time whereabuts (下落) with GPS. The algrithm successfully identified all the hidden traps where the manikins eventually ended up in.

The researchers are planning t share the new algrithm with sea rescue teams t save mre peple lst at sea. “If there’s an accident in the last hur, rescuers can immediately lk and see where the sea traps are,” Peacck tld MIT News. “That’s imprtant when there’s a limited time windw in which they have t respnd.”

Hw will the new rescue algrithm help peple lst at sea?

    A. By quickly predicting their crrect lcatin.

    B. By changing the tides and weather at sea fr a while.

    C. By using magnets in the searching prcess.

    D. By prviding sea rescuers with varius slutins.

    【答案】A

【解析】细节理解题,根据第二段中提及:have cme up with an algrithm (算法) that can quickly predict the lcatins t which peple flating in the cean will drift (漂流), speeding up search and rescue peratins at sea.

    9. What des the underlined wrd “cnverge” in Paragraph 4 prbably mean?

    A. Jin.B. Separate.C. Change.D. Stp.

    【答案】A

    10. What d we knw abut the Eulerian apprach?

    A. It’s the mst ppular algrithm used in cean rescue.

    B. It has ften led rescuers in the wrng directin.

    C. It is the first t intrduce the idea f “hidden traps”.

    D. It keeps cllecting infrmatin abut cean cnditins.

    11. What attitude des Peacck have tward the new apprach?

    A. Wrried.B. Cnfident. C. Dubtful. D. Curius.

This was fund t be true in Ls Angles, where gang activity was reduced when cmmunity centers fr teens were thriving and active. And generally speaking, the cnnectin between ecnmic inequality and crime is rbustly dcumented fr the U.S. And why summer sees a wrse situatin? It's prbably because it's even harder fr yungsters t land jbs that prvide fr life necessities.

S if fficials want t address the summer spike in crime, they may act differently instead f aiming straight at crimes. Simply upgrading security and severely punishing ffenses almst prduce vid effects. Instead, be pen t varius ptins and they will find that develpment f jb hunting agencies r cmmunity prfessinal training centers are accmpanying the drp f crime rate withut seasnal exceptins. After all, bread always cmes first fr everyne.

“I’m ging t miss yu s much, Pppy,” said the tall, thin teenager. He bent dwn t hug his ld friend gdbye. He std up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying nt t let his emtins get the better f him.

His parents were nt quite able t cntrl theirs. They had driven their sn several hurs ut f twn t the university where he wuld sn be living and studying. It was time t say gdbye fr nw at least. The family hugged and smiled thrugh misty eyes and then laughed.

The by lifted the last bag nt his shulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it,” he said. “I’ll see yu back hme in a mnth, kay?” His parents ndded, and they watched as he walked ut f sight int the crwds f hundreds f students and parents. The by’s mther turned t the dg, “Okay, Pppy, time t g back hme.”

The huse seemed quiet as a tmb withut the by living there. All that week, Pppy didn’t seem interested in her dinner, her favrite ty, r even in her daily walk. Her wners were sad t, but they knew their sn wuld be back t visit. Pppy didn’t.

They ffered the dg sme f her favrite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit n the sfa, but the ld girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her wners started t get wrried. “What shuld we d t cheer Pppy up?” asked Dad. “We’ve tried everything.”

“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy,” smiled Mm. “Withut anybdy left in the huse but us, this place culd use a bit f fun. Let’s get a little dg fr Pppy.

It didn’t take lng befre they walked thrugh the frnt dr carrying a big bx. Pppy welcmed them hme as usual but when she saw the bx, she stpped. She put her nse n it. Her tail began wagging (摆动) ever s slwly, then faster as she caught the smell.

Para 1:Dad pened the bx and a sweet little dg appeared.____________________________________

    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Para 2:A few weeks later, the by arrived hme frm university. _______________________________

    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dad pened the bx and a sweet little dg appeared. She was all white with shining big eyes, a black spt n its frehead making it mre attractive. Her new wners gave her a new name, Sptty. Mm tk her ut f the bx carefully, putting her beside Pppy’s feet. Pppy’s eyes were first filled with surprise and curisity and then brightened with jy. Lking at this, the parents relieved because Pppy accepted Sptty and their plan wrked.

A few weeks later, the by arrived hme frm university. The first thing that caught his attentin was the happy nise made by Pppy and anther dg.When finding the by back hme frm university, Pppy was verjyed and intrduced Sptty t him. The three, immediately became just ne slid alliance. Frm their stry we can see the fact that happiness between three is much mre than between tw r just having it alne.

Dad pened the bx and a sweet little dg appeared. A few weeks later, the by arrived hme frm university.
