The first time I used the TV to distract my daughter, I felt like a bad parent; I convinced myself I was a “bad” mom—these days I believe the opposite to be true. Screen time makes me a better mom.
Now I know what most of you might be thinking: That’s ridiculous. Only crappy(糟糕的)parents rely on the screen to care for their kids. Then again, experts
suggest parents limit media use. And while I do not doubt experts, there are things they fail to consider.
Like most 6-year-olds, my daughter gets worked up and excited easily and watching a cartoon gives her a chance to shut off her mind. And there are other reasons— more selfish reasons. I am a work-from-work mom, and giving her screen time gives me “me”time. I’m able to write while she watches TV. And while this may sound bad, I believe I am helping my daughter realize she should rely on
herself. When Mommy works, she gets her own snacks, drinks and toys.
There are other benefits, too. TV has also taught my daughter. Thanks to “super Why”,she knew her alphabet at 2, and thanks to “Sesame Street”, she was able to count to 20 by age 3. And I use the screen as a great incentive. My daughter earns “tablet time” when she completes tasks, e.g., making her bed earns 15minutes while doing her homework gets her 30.
Of course, I have a few rules. During meals, the TV is off; all programs must be supervised; on weekdays, she is limited to two hours maximum. So remember: It doesn’t matter what our kids watch; it matters what they do, what they say, what they feel and how they act, and only you know what is best for them.
24.What can be learned about the author’s opinion about screen time? A.It fails to take kids into consideration.
    B. It is welcome by most crappy parents. C. It challenges a popular belief.
    D. It is in line with experts.
    25. How can screen time be good for kids of mothers working at home? A. It gives them topics to discuss with friends.
    B. It gives them some uninterrupted time. C. It enables them to keep their spirits up. D. It helps them become independent.
    26. What does the underlined word “incentive” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Motivator B. Relaxation C. Idea producer D. Learning tool
    27. Which of the following might the author agree with ? A. Science and technology are primary productive forces. B. A man is good-for-nothing until he is educated.
    C. Nothing can be accomplished without rules.
    D. Each coin has two sides.

New Deal Design, one of the world's leading tech design studios, has invented an artificial intelligence-equipped toy to fight the "distraction economy" by developing children's attention spans.
Called Spot, the toy is aimed at learning and discovery. It functions primarily as a handheld scanner that kids can point at an object around them, such as a flower or a bird, to hear it talk back.Using its AI software,Spot
recognizes the object and voices a little monologue(独白)from it, processing
information to suit children aged five to nine.
There's also a secondary function that comes into play at bedtime, when
    Spot uses its in-built projecto(r
投影仪) to present a story made up around the
    day's discoveries.
Spot is a concept at this stage, one that grew out of the research New Deal Design conducted into children's development. The designers found that the right kind of toy could encourage focus,as opposed to instant satisfaction. They wanted to cultivate a kind of junior-level mindfulness that would set kids up with positive life skills.
In terms of appearance, Spot has a complicated look, with its 3D camera fixed in the head. The models are smooth, including a wooden handle,a button and a base. The choice of materials was inspired by traditional kids' building blocks.
When Spot recognizes an object, it blinks to signal it has locked the target. Its head also locks into place to avoid any shaking. As an example, New Deal Design describes a girl called Max, who among other things, encounters a robin while out with the toy. Via Spot, the bird says, "Hi Max, my name is Robin! Did you know ..."
At that night's Story Time, Spot starts "Once upon a time there was a little girl named Max who met a robin. One day, Max asked the robin ..." New Deal Design says that day summaries like this helps kids to relax and get better sleep. Seeing themselves at the centre of stories also helps to build self-confidence and self-awareness.
    28. In which aspect do children benefit from the artificial intelligence-equipped
    toy?
    A. encouraging focus B. giving an instant satisfaction
    C. learning self-control D. developing positive life skills
    29. According to the passage, which statement about Spot is right? A. Spot tells stories programmed in advance.
    B. Spot is beneficial to developing children’s attention spans.
    C. Spot has already been used to fight the “distraction economy” now. D. Spot’s appearance was inspired by traditional kids’ building blocks.
    30. According to the text, who will the toy be useful for? A.Tom, two years old, can’t recognize an object around him.
    B. Max, eight years old, wants to make up a story about robin.
    C. Tina, nine years old, can’t concentrate her attention on her class.
    D. Mike, twelve years old, wants to learn something about artificial intelligence.
    31. What is the passage mainly about?
    A. A scientific invention B. A learning program
    C. An creative method D. A tech design studios
    D
When learning a new language, speakers often have non-native accents. Linguistic research suggests such accent is shaped by the speaker’s first language that they learned when growing up. Schepens’ team’s research puts new light on just how strong these effects can be.
There’re similar researches from other scientists, but Schepens’ team analyzed a data set of more than 50,000 adults, who learned Dutch as their second or third languages. Besides, these adults came from more than 60 different first language backgrounds. These data were collected through a state exam administered by the Dutch government for foreigners that enter Holland. The exam rated each test
    taker’s Dutch speaking proficiency(熟练,水平)
The team found that about half of the individual difference in the proficiency of learners could be accounted for by a handful of reasons: the learner’s education and sex(women had higher scores than men), the learner’s age when they arrived in Holland, the time they spent in Holland, and the learner’s first language. This last reason was the most prominent one since it accounts for 50 percent of the explained difference in learners’ proficiency.
What leads to this? Working with professor Hout, Schepens’s team studied the linguistic similarity between Dutch and the 62 first languages spoken by different learners in the database. The huge majority---about 80 percent---of the effect of the language background was explained by linguistic similarity. Of the test takers who grew up speaking Arabic, only about 5 percent scored higher in Dutch speaking proficiency than the worst 50 percent of the test takers that grew up speaking German.
“Our results suggest this is largely due to the fact that German shares many linguistic characteristics with Dutch, but Arabic does not,” says Schepens.
“This suggests a large part of the non-nativeness of a learner is simply due to the language they grew up with, and this reason is entirely out of their control,” says Florian Jaeger. “The result can play a part in language teaching.”
    32. What’s Schepens’ team’s research mainly about? A. the difference between first languages.
    B. the best ways for foreigners to learn Dutch.
    C. the strengths of Holland’s state exam on language.
    D. the first language’s influence on new language learning.
    33. How does Schepens’ team’s research differ from those similar ones? A. being carried out on a larger scale
    B. gaining more countries’ support
    C. testing those able to speak many languages
    D. being based on teenagers from Germany and Holland
    34. What does the underlined “prominent” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. complex B. confusing C. noticeable D. indirect
    35. What did Schepens’ team learn from the teamwork with Hout? A. European languages have lots of similarities
    B. Arabic-speaking people find it easy to learn German
    C. Many test takers have poor first language proficiency

    D. Linguistic similarity benefits learners’ foreign language proficiency 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两 项为多余选项。
Suppose you were promised $1,440 each day for your entire life-- at least
$524,600 a year--that could never be reduced or changed as long as you live. Sounds great, doesn’t it?
Actually , we all do get 1,440 a day—but in minutes, not dollars. 36 It
is possible to get more money, but you can not make more time. We all know
“ time is money” .Then are you a good steward of your time? 37
Find out where your time is going now. 38 . Include work, cooking and meals, cleaning and personal hygiene, sleep , family time and mindless activities such as binge-watching TV and getting lost in social media.
Set limits. Use kitchen timers, phone reminders, apps or other timing devices to stay focused and work more productively.
39 Putting things together is really helpful .When you have errands (差
事 )to run, instead of making three separate trips on three different days to grab groceries, office supplies or home store products , put things into one — hit all three stores in one trip. It is more efficient to finish “ one-off ” tasks in one swoop(突袭)rather than deal with one at a time throughout the day.
At the end of the day, week, month and year, take a look at how well you have managed your time. You will see where you could do better and where you have accomplished what you set out to do. It is similar to reviewing your annual financial statement. 40 Do that over and over and “it becomes habit” . Just like muscle memory, it is natural.
A.You can find your time passing by quickly . B.Group small tasks into one job.
    C. Write down everything you do in a day.
D.Time is our most precious and limited resource.
E.There are many benefits of managing your time properly.
F.Try these simple steps to take control of your clock and calendar:
G.Take time each day to reflect on your accomplishments and set goals for tomorrow.

The icy wind howled across the empty street and it was an unusually quiet day in the emergency room on December 25th. Quiet, that is, except for the nurses who were standing around the nurses' station complaining about having to work on Christmas Day,for people were supposed to be spending time with their families, exchanging gifts and wishes.
I was guiding nurse that day and had just done the cleanup in the waiting room.Since there were no patients waiting to be seen at the time, I returned to the nurses' station for a cup of hot coffee that someone had brought in for Christmas. Just then,a colleague came back and told me I had five patients waiting to be evaluated.
I was surprised,"Five, how did I get five; I was just out there and no one was in the waiting room.”
    "Well,there are five signed in.”
So I went straight out and called the first name. Five bodies showed up at my guiding desk, a pale short woman and four small children in untidy clothing.
"Are you all sick?"I asked suspiciously.
"Yes," she said weakly and lowered her head.
"Okay,"I replied, unconvinced,“Who's first?” One by one they sat down, and I asked the usual beginning questions. When it came to the descriptions of their symptoms, things got a little confusing. Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren't accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough, but seemed to try hard to produce it.
Something was wrong with the picture. Our hospital policy, however, was not to turn down any patient,so we would see them. When I explained to the mother that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her because there were several more critical patients, she responded,"Take your time; it's warm in here and there is a Christmas tree."
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为 150 左右:

    Dear fellow students,
It is common to see that students throw away or waste food carelessly. Here I’m writing to call on us students to save food, not to waste.
First and foremost, it is suggested that we should take as much as you eat. Besides, you’d
better pack up the left-over and take it home if you can’t eat all . Most importantly, we must
raise awareness of saving food and keep in mind that it is shameful to waste it.
In short, let’s take action immediately ,not only for ourselves but also for the future
    generations. Lihua

    读后续写参考范文:
    Possible version:
Then she turned and, with a smile, settled her kids in the waiting room.On seeing the appealing gifts in the Christmas tree, the kids were too excited to move an inch. All of a sudden, the youngest kid looked at her mom ,whispering, “Dear Mom, May I take one of the gifts in the tree? I can’t get any gift for many years.” Upset and sorrowful, the guilty mother shook her head. The rest froze, eyes falling on their little sister. Realizing they were homeless, I went back and told my colleagues what had happened.
My colleagues, complaining about working Christmas, turned to sympathy for the homeless family. Immediately we were occupied preparing presents for the unexpected guests, who just wanted to stay warm on Christmas Day. With gifts in their hands, the kids couldn't hide their joy, whose laughter filled the waiting room. As they were leaving, the mother hugged each of us hard and tight , expressing her gratitude, “You're our angels and it's your love that warms us up!”
