Americans with small families own a small car or a large one. If both parents are working, they usually have two cars. When the family is large, one of the cars is sold and they will buy a van (住房汽车).
A small car can hold four persons and a large car can hold six persons but it is very crowded. A van hold seven persons easily, so a family with three children could ask their grandparents to go on a holiday travel. They could all travel together.
Mr. Hagen and his wife had a third child last year. This made them sell their second car and buy a van. In the van, the sixth and seventh seat are used to put other things, for a family of five must carry many suitcases when they travel. When they arrive at their grandparents’ home, the suitcases are removed from the two seats which can then carry the grandparents.
Americans call vans motor homes. A motor home is always used for holidays. When a family are traveling to the mountains or to the seaside, they can live in their motor home for a few days or weeks. Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. She was kind. People always seemed to feel comfortable in her presence. For years, she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home with her where she taught a ceramic(陶艺)class.
On one summer day, Mama told me to get changed and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? I imagined the cool lake water. Irritated, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. We sat in silence. I was too upset to make conversation.
“Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?” Mama asked calmly.
“No,” I said.
“We are going to volunteer at a children’s shelter today. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you.” she explained.
When we reached the shelter, Mama rang the doorbell. Moments later, we were greeted by a woman. She led us to the front room where all of the children were playing. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with iron marks. I was told it was because she wouldn’t stop crying. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars. Others hid their emotional wounds.
As I took in my surroundings, I felt a gentle tug on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl looking up at me. “Hi! You want to play dolls with me?” she asked. I looked over at Mama for reinforcement. She smiled and nodded. I turned back and said, “Sure.” Her tiny hand reached up and held mine, as if to comfort me.
My mom taught me a valuable lesson that summer. I returned to the shelter with her several times. During those visits, some of the children shared their troubled pasts with me and I learned to be grateful for what I had. Today as I convey these values to my own child, I reflect back to that experience. It was a time that I will never forget.

B. They weren’t allowed to go outside.
C. They were once treated badly.
D. They all suffered from mental illness.
54. Which word is closest to the meaning of the underlined word “reinforcement” ?
A. Truth. B. Help. C. Comfort. D. Support.
55. What lesson did the author learn from her experience?

Most young people enjoy some forms of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some forms—football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering.
Those who have a passion of climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks in high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve his skills year by year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they perhaps climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.
56. What sports are popular among people in winter in the passage?
A. Soccer and golf. B. Skiing and skating.
C. Cycling and hockey. D. Mountaineering.
57. What does the underlined word “passion” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Strong emotion. B. Good way. C. Better skill. D. Good reason.
58. Why does the author think mountaineering is a sport, not a game?
A. Because it has man-made rules.
B. Because it is too dangerous for climbers.
C. Because it can't bring people joy or leisure.
D. Because it is free for climbers to use their own methods.
59. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Mountaineering is not attractive to people.
B. Physical quality is more important than mental one for climbers.
C. A mountain climber passes his best by the age of thirty.
D. It is possible for an old man of fifty or sixty to climb the Alps.
60. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Sports in winter B. Team work in climbing
C. Mountaineering D. A mountain climber

The summer I turned 16, my father gave me his renewed car. It was a gift wasted on me at that age but Hannah and I could drive around our city in it.
Hannah was my best friend, a year younger but much taller, very attractive. That summer she signed with a modeling agency. She had already started her work in fashion show.
A month after my birthday, Hannah and I went to a movie. On the way home, we stopped at the McDonald's drive-through, putting the fries on the seat between us to share. Then we decided to ride around awhile. Taking a turn too fast, I hit a neighbor's wall and drove into a full-grown tree.
An impossible amount of blood on Hannah's face. They took us in separate ambulances. I'd broken my cheekbone, and Hannah's forehead was badly scarred( 留疤痕 ). In the emergency room, my parents spoke quietly, " Best plastic( 整形的 ) surgeon in the city for Hannah. " End of Hannah's modeling career.
I didn't know what I could say to Hannah. When her mother, Sharon, came into my hospital room, I started to cry, preparing myself for her anger.
She sat beside me and took my hand. "I hit my best friend's car when I was your age. ” She said. "I damaged her car and mine badly. You're both alive, and the rest is window dressing. ” I started to protest, and Sharon stopped me. "I forgive you. Hannah will too. ”
Sharon's forgiveness allowed Hannah and me to get back in the car together that winter, to stay friends throughout high school and college, to be in each other's weddings, and to watch my daughters play with her children. When most Chinese people were happily filling their shopping baskets on the annual shopping festival on Nov 11, 2018, a group of musicians from the China Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) did something different. They gave a performance at the Forbidden City Concert Hall on the pleasant evening. The concert, a part of the CPO'S I8th season, brought as much joy to classic music lovers as shopping brings to others.
Tony Siqi Yun, a 17-year-old pianist, who was named the 2018 champion at the "Thomas and Evon Cooper International Competition" in Cleveland, played the well-known note from Chopin (肖邦). The piano concerto (协奏)was written by young Chopin when he was only 20 years old. Yun, also with young people's energy yet sensitive mind, beautifully showed the romantic beauty and peace in the note. His elegant style and perfect skill soon won the hearts of listeners as the sound of piano began. When he finished the last note, all the listeners applauded, just like the audience did at the concerto's debut (首演) on Oct 11 in 1830. Coincidentally, after the performance, Yun will soon leave for New York to go on his piano study at the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division. The young pianist developed excellent skills at the Middle School Affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.
Though taking part in the CPO's music festival for the first time, Yun has worked with the Orchestra twice. One was in 2014, at the "Silk Road" New Year's Concert co-hosted by the CPO and China Central Television, and the other was a tour in Shanghai in 2016. "China Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most brilliant orchestras, and it's my honor to work with them, " the young artist said, "The members are very strict in music and the sound it gives is always extravagant(夸张的) yet elegant. I really enjoy the experience to perform with them."

Children who spend too much time on smartphones and computers are at risk for a lifetime of health problems, including cancer-causing obesity ( 肥胖症 ) and eyesight problems, according to a new study.
The study, carried out by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) in UK, found sedentary behaviors - like staring at an iPhone - are among the causes of people ’ s weight gain. The review shows that being overweight or obesity is related to several types of cancer, including breast and stomach, but physical activity can reduce that risk.
"New technologies have encouraged people to increase the time they spend on sedentary behaviors such as sitting in cars and watching television as well as using computers, mobile phones or other electronic devices, "the report said. "Low levels of physical activity have been linked to a number of health problems including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, poor bone health and depression.
According to the study, 14.1 million people across the globe were diagnosed ( 诊断 ) with cancer in 2012 and 8.2 million died from cancer, but that about 40 percent of cancer cases can be prevented. "This global cancer burden is expected to increase to 21.7 million cases and 13 million deaths by 2030,” it said.
WCRF also warned that a lot more snacks will be eaten as a result of spending too much time on screen and lack of physical activity. It said about 1.97 billion adults and more than 338 million children around the world were considered overweight in 2016.
Meanwhile, kids who love playing video games are at a greater risk for developing "digital myopia ” ( 数字近视 ). For every hour a child plays video games, their risk for short-sightedness increases by 3 percent. The number of children suffering from myopia has doubled over the last 50 years, from 7.2 percent to 16.4 percent-and experts conclude that the shocking number is a result of too much screen time.

Photography(摄影) is a very popular art form. Anyone with a camera – or a mobile phone – can practice it.A picture communicates in a way that words often can’t. As the photographer Destin Sparks put it, “Photography is the story I fail to put into words.” And there’s no better chance to practice the art of photography than during our vacation time.

Antelope Slot Canyon Tours in Arizona specializes in tours of the state’s famous canyons(峡谷), which gives photographers the chance to capture them on camera.
Most of the tourists are able to make beautiful images with just their mobile phones. Still, help is on hand from the tour guide for those who aren’t great at using their cameras. These tour guides have taken a course in photography in case the skills they’ve learned would help their customers.

In my memory, winters always used to be really unpleasant. You had to dress like a bear just to keep warm when you went outside. You were often cold, wet and no more than one step away from the thin ice on the lake.If you worked over time and went home in the dark, you would arrive home to an ice-cold house. And that would mean turning on the heating and waiting.
Fortunately, things don't have to be so challenging any more.Technology, engineering and design have developed, giving us new solutions to old problems. It means dealing with winter needn’t be like skating on thin ice.
With a smart thermostat(恒温器), our homes can be toasty when we need them to be. Many models go with smartphone APPs that allow you to regulate temperature from a distance, so we can warm up the house before we arrive home. According to techradar.com, a large technology news and reviews website, Tado's model has a voice control function, while the Nest “learns” your habits and heats the house for you.
Clothes have been given an upgrade, too.Electronic heated jackets and trousers heat up when you turn them on.What better way to keep warm in the dead of winter? At the touch of a button,or through an APP on our phones, the clothes produce heat from materials placed inside. Many models offer three levels of heating which stay warm for over 12 hours.
Finally, there is the headgear(头部装备) - Hats that have speakers which are included in the cloth using Bluetooth technology,so we can listen to our favourite music or,in some cases, have a phone call using the in-built microphone. All while keeping the head warm and avoiding coldness.
For many, the thought of winter used to be enough to make their blood run cold. But using technology, life needn’t freeze up.There’s no reason why winter can’t be really, really cool.
12. What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us about?
A. Winters are very cold in the author’s hometown.
B. The author’s feeling about winter.
C. There was heating in people’s houses in the past.
D. The author’s impression of the winter in the past.
13 What does the underlined word “toasty” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Relaxing. B. Comfortable.
C. Cool. D. Hot.
14. What can we know according to the text?
A. Some models can set the temperature of the house before people come home.
B. The Nest can only warm the house when you press the button.
C. Jackets and trousers can be heated up by our phones.
D. The heating of the clothes do not last longer than 12 hours.
15. Which can be the best title of this passage?

As an Asian country, Singapore has a reputation for being highly westernized, with English among the country’s four official languages, but a couple of signs found on local buses that have recently become a hit online may say otherwise.
Quite different from English we know, the sign read, for example, “Here cannot go in” instead of “No entry”, and “Here can charge phone” instead of “Charge phone here”. This language that resembles English is called Singaporean English or Singlish.
The New York Times calls Singlish “patchwork” because Singapore consists of migrants(移民) from several countries including China, India and Malaysia, and they all speak their own versions of “English”.
“Everyone who speaks it shapes it,” wrote the newspaper.
For example, in Singlish, you can easily recognize influences from Chinese, including vocabulary such as” Mee Siam” and “da bao”. Sentence structures like ” toilet where” instead of “where’s the toilet” also come from Chinese.
Interesting and diverse as it may seem, the trend for Singlish is worrying Singapore’s government. It is concerned that the dialect is lowering the country’s English standard and may affect its relationship with visitors. It even started the Speak Good English Movement.
Unfortunately, the problem was not solved. Instead, Singlish has boomed, especially among young people who think of it as a sign of being cool and a way of identifying themselves as Singaporean.
But this does not mean that standard English is being abandoned by young people. In fact, they are much more capable than the government gives credit--they can speak both.
“We are a nation good at code switching-- we know that the way we speak to friends or drivers must be different from how act at work or school,” wrote Cheryl, a Singaporean author, in Time magazine, “To actively urge us to give up a language that speaks to the very heart of who we are, that so beautifully represents the melting pot of Chinese, Indians, Malaysians and Eurasians that we are, is shortsighted, surely.”
1.Singapore has many different versions of English because_____
A. Singlish is influenced by Chinese B. Singapore is made up of migrants
C. Singlish is affected by the official languages D. Singapore is highly westernized
2. What is the purpose of starting the Speak Good English Movement?
A. To stop the new trend. B. To better the relationship.
C. To keep the English standard. D. To give the government credit.
3. What do the young people think of Singlish?
A. It’s interesting. B. It’s their identity.
C. It’s a sign of status. D. It’s a way of code-switching.
4. What can we learn from what Cheryl said?
A.Different people speak different styles of Singlish.
B. Singlish is a more beautiful language than others.
C. People speaks Singlish only to friends and drivers.
D. People can use Singlish to express themselves well.
5.Singaporean English might NOT be affected by_______
A.Chinese B. Italian C. Indian D.Malaysian

A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night's sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off(打盹)-if it is milked from a cow at night.
Researchers have discovered that"night milk"contains more melatonin, which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.
The study,by researchers from Seoul,South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.
Those given night milk, which contained 10times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.
Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.
While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.
Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.
Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

A survey of university backgrounds of heads of major global companies found that Harvard in the United States was the most likely place to have studied in.
The Times Higher Education magazine ranked the universities attended by chief executive officers (CEO) of Fortune Global 500 companies. There are four US universities in the top 10, with three from France, two from Japan and one from South Korea. The highest ranked UK university is Oxford in 21st place.
This league table, described as the Alma Mater Index, shows which universities around the world taught the bosses of some of the world’s biggest companies. One in 20 had a degree from a single institution, Harvard. This included Margaret C. Whitman of Hewlett-Packard, Jeffrey R. Immelt of General Electric and Vittorio Colao of Vodafone.
But the top 10 for producing business leaders does not contain all the usual names that appear at the top of university rankings. Oxford and Cambridge are absent, but the University of Pennsylvania in the US and Keio University in Japan are included, along with three French universities, headed by the Ecole Polytechnique.
Across the top 100, universities from the US dominate, followed by universities in China, Japan, France and Germany. There are more Ceos who went to university in Asia than in Europe. In terms of national comparisons, UK universities produced the sixth highest number of global chief executives, with Oxford in 21st place and Cambridge in 45th place.
But even though Harvard might have taught the biggest number of bosses from the top 500 companies, it was not attended by any of the heads of the biggest 10 companies, who were from a more diverse range of universities.
Royal Dutch Shell is headed by a graduate of Zurich University of Applied Sciences; Walmart is headed by a student of Georgia Tech and Exxon Mobil has a chief executive from the University of Texas, Austin. Three of the leaders of these biggest companies went to university in China and the head of Volkswagen went to university in Stuttgart.

Norman Borlaug, who is making a difference, is known around the world. He is often described as the man who has saved more lives than any other person in history. Norman Borlaug is considered the father of what has been called the Green Revolution. His ideas about agriculture increased crop production and ended hunger in many nations. Mr. Borlaug continues to be a leader among agricultural researchers.
Norman Borlaug was born in 1914 on a farm in the American state of Iowa. In the middle of the 20th century, world population was expanding faster than food production. Experts said many people in developing countries would face starvation.
Norman Borlaug was an agricultural researcher at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center in Mexico. He developed methods of growing wheat that increased the amount harvested by three times. He later repeated this success in India, Pakistan and Africa.
His methods of farming saved millions of people who would have starved to death. Norman Borlaug was given the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in 1970.
Norman Borlaug is still urging experts to think about the needs of people around the world. His latest concern is a disease in wheat called UG99. He says it has the power to destroy most of the wheat being grown around the world. He says reductions in agricultural programs have made it harder to take action against such threats.
Mr. Borlaug’s granddaughter Julie works at the center named after him at Texas A&M University in Dallas. She says his worry about food problems rises from the belief that hunger is unacceptable. She says Norman Borlaug still believes it is our responsibility as human beings to feed one another.

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning experiences increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表) are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习) for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one’s future development.
12. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A. Stories for children are easy to remember.
B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups.
C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words.
D. People remember well what they learned in childhood.

C. a skill to deal with math problems D. a basic step towards advanced studies
15. What is the author’s opinion on cramming?
A. It leads to failure in college exams. B. It’s helpful only in a limited way.
C. It’s possible to result in poor memory. D. It increases students’ learning interest.

Holiday photos have been a part of the culture of travelers for a long time. For decades, vacationers have made sure they’ve packed a camera along with bathing suits, Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses. A camera is an important holiday item. But over the last 10 years, photography has become much more popular. It’s easy to capture ( 捕捉 ) still and moving pictures of places of interest, and it’s also easy to show off these pictures on social media.Armed with their smart phones, tourists, this year more than ever, are capturing the beauty of our planet.
Of course, travel companies have caught on to this. Trekksoft has an example of photo-tourism from the United States, a land with a vast choice of beautiful locations.

B.None of them are among the top 10 list of the survey.
C.They performed better than French universities on the list.
D.They produced the second most number of global CEOs.
14.Which university produced the greatest number of global CEOs?
A. Pennsylvania B. Harvard C. Cambridge D.Zurich
15.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.The Rankings of the Famous Universities in the World

8. Norman Borlaug was ________ years old when he was given the Nobel Prize.
A. 56 B. 94
C 65 D. 99
9. In the passage, the writer tries to ________.
A. express his respect for Norman Borlaug.
