I was teaching an ESL class to about 20 students. One man, a Cambodian, had worked hard all semester(学期) but seldom volunteered to talk in class.
One day, he was moved to speak and tell his own story. He had been in Cambodia during the terrible years of Pol Pot. One day a group of men with guns had come to his village, lined up all inhabitants(村民), and methodically(专业地) shot everyone. Either reflexively (灵活地)or cannily, my student, though miraculously(奇迹般地) not wounded, fell down when everyone else did. He lay there, perfectly still, among the dead and dying until finally the men went away. Then he started walking ...
That trek(旅途) away from the scene of mass murder, a path that finally led him to a new life in the United States, was vague in his mind. But the description of mass murder in his village moved everyone in the classroom. Some students cried quietly as he spoke. No one said a word when he ended.
There was a long silence. Then he said, "Now I come to United States, and I think my life will be perfect here. But I have big problem."
Tentatively(尝试性地), we asked whether he felt comfortable sharing it.
After a long sigh, he said, "Now I have three girl friends, and I don't know what to do. I going crazy."
After a few moments we gave ourselves permission to laugh. Our laughter was explosive and uncontainable. Here he was living the American dream--and experiencing American problems.

A land free from destruction ,plus wealth, natural resources, and labor(劳动力) supply—all these were important factors in helping England to become the center for the Industrial Revolution .But, they were not enough. Something else was needed to start the industrial process .That “something special” was men—creative individuals who could invent machines, find new sources of power, and establish business organizations to reshape(重塑) society.
The men who created the machines of the Industrial Revolution came from many backgrounds and many occupations. Many of them were more inventors than scientists. A man who is a pure scientist is primarily interested in doing his research accurately. He is not necessarily working so that his findings can be used.
An inventor or one interested in applied science is usually trying to make something that has an actual use. He may try to solve a problem by using the theories (理论)of science or by experimenting through correct and error. Regardless of his method, he is working to obtain a specific result: the construction of a harvesting machine, the burning of a light bulb, or one of many other objectives.
Most of the people who developed the machines of the Industrial Revolution were inventors, not trained scientists. A few were both scientists and inventors. Even those who had little or no training in science might not have made their inventions if a ground work had not been laid by scientists years later.
    60. England became the center of the Industrial Revolution owing to ________.

    C. labor supply and creative individuals D. all above

    C. is not necessarily working so that his findings can be used
    D.B and C
    63. Creative individuals’ method to solve a problem includes____________.

Have you ever argued with your loved ones about simple misunderstandings?Little wonder. We often believe we’re more skillful in getting our point across than we actually are, according to Boza Keysar, a professor at the University of Chicago. In
his recent study, speakers tried to express their meanings using unclear sentences. Speakers who thought listeners understood were wrong nearly half the time. Here’s some good advice to reduce misunderstanding:
(1)Don’t trust what you see from the listener. Listeners often nod, look at you
or say “uhhuh” to be polite or move the conversation along. But it’s easy to consider these as signs of understanding.
(2)Train the editor in your head. If you say, “Beth discusses her problems with her husband, ”it’s not clear whether she’s talking to her husband or about him. Try instead, Beth talks to her husband about her problems.” or “Beth talks to others about the problems with her husband. ”
(3)Ask listeners to repeat your message. Introduce your request by saying “I
want to be sure I said that right. ”Questions like “How does that sound? ”or “Does that make sense? ”may also work.
(4)Listen well. When on the receiving end, ask questions to be sure you’re on the same page. After all, it isn’t just the speaker’s job to make his speech understood.
    64. The author gives us some good advice because _______________.
    A. misunderstanding does harm to our health.
    B. there’s little wonder that misunderstanding occurs now and then.
    C. misunderstanding always leads to series of serious problems.
    D. it’s skillful to express our meanings using clear sentences.
    65. While talking to others, the speaker is advised to _________________.
    A. believe what you see from the listeners
    B. know that listeners will show him that they understand what he has said.
    C. express his meanings using clear sentences even when he sees their signs of understanding.
    D. ignore their feelings at that time.
    66. According to the third paragraph, the speaker should _______________.
    A. discuss problems with husbands or wives.
    B. make sure he has only one meaning when expressing himself
    C. express himself in long sentences.
    D. train himself a good editor.
    67. In the last paragraph, “you’re on the same page” means that _________________.
    A. you’re reading the same page as the speaker does.
    B. you’re following the speaker closely.
    C. you have the same meaning as the speaker.
    D. you express clearly what the speaker means.

Recently we had two reports about concerns over the progress of boys in the American education system. Some people say there is a crisis(危机) for boys. Others say there are problems for some boys. But they say the situation is not so much that boys are falling behind as that girls are catching up with boys.
Today we examine changes that have taken place at the college level. Here there are similar issues. Some people are worried about the situation for men while others praise areas of progress for women.
In nineteen seventy, women represented forty-two percent of college students in the United States. Now they are about fifty-six percent.
A recent report called "The Truth About Boys and Girls" included this information -- but not as evidence of a crisis. Sara Mead, a policy analyst(分析人士) at the research group Education Sector, wrote the report. She sees the situation this way:
Yes, men are earning fewer four-year college degrees(学位) than women. But men are still earning more degrees than they have in the past, only at a slower growth rate than women.
And, yes, more women than men are also earning master's degrees. But men still earn more doctorates. These are the degrees needed to become a doctor or a lawyer or a professor. In addition, men hold more positions of power and earn more money on average than women do.
There are many theories why males and females perform differently in their schooling. Some are based on recent brain research, but others center on environment. Some people say boys now face a hostile environment in American education.
Christina Hoff Sommers, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, wrote the book "The War Against Boys." She says the lower percentage of men in college points to a serious problem in the education of American boys.
    68. The best title for the passage is ____________.
    A. More Women Go to College than Men B. Concerns over the Progress of Boys
    B. Praise Areas of Progress for Women
    C. D. Reaction Is Split as More Women, Fewer Men, Go to College
    69. What’s Sara Mead’s attitude towards the situation for men now?
    A. He thinks it normal. B. He regards it as evidence of crisis.
    C. He thinks it strange. D. He regards it as absurd.
70.The underlined word “hostile” in Para.8 probably means____________.
    A. hopeless B. meaningful C. unfriendly D. powerful
71.Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. The lower percentage of men in college shows that men work less hard than women.
    B. More women are earning more doctorates and master’s degrees than men.
    C. Based on the present situation for men , some people think it a serious problem in the education of boys.
    D. Women perform as well as men in their schooling all the way.

My students and I in my 8th grade Literature class were reading "Raymond's Run" by Toni Cade Bambara from our literature textbook. It's the story of a young tough African American girl, nicknamed Squeaky, who is a runner and watches over her mentally disabled (智力障碍的)brother. One of the conflicts in the story deals with three girls who she sees walking toward her and who like to tease her brother. The author, through Squeaky, describes the potential meeting as "Dodge City."
All of the kids in the classroom, although many have read Louis L'Amour, had no idea what "Dodge City" meant. I thought I could relate to some of their experiences by mentioning old cowboy movies (I forgot, of course, that old cowboy movies were a part of my growing up in the 50's and 60's, and not theirs). And, as I sometimes do, I became a part of the drama.
"It's high noon!" I nearly bellowed(吼叫) as I walked slowly down the center aisle), pretending(假装) to be a cowboy. "There are a couple of gunslingers(持枪闲荡者). They're in the middle of town, and they're walking towards each other. WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO?"
Nick, who was probably ready for lunch and was caught up in my little drama, YELLED out excitedly, "THEY'RE GOING TO RING THE BELL!"
The whole class erupted into laughter, and it took us all a few minutes to settle down. It was a moment to remember.
    72. What’s the main character of the story mentioned in the passage?
    A. Toni Cade Bambara B. Nick C. Squeaky D. Louis
    73. The author mentioned old cowboy movies in order to ___________
    A. become a part of the drama B. make his students laugh
    C. help the kids understand what “Dodge City” meant
    D. gain some of the experiences.
    74. Which of the following words best describes the author’s teaching methods ?
    A. boring B. lively C. critical D. moving
    75. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. The author was crazy about cowboy movies
    B. A couple of gunslingers were going to ring the bell
    C. The author used to be a cowboy.
    D. Nick performed in the author ‘s drama.

    书面表达:
    One possible version:
Mark used to dislike television. He used to think that people spent too much time watching it. A lot of his friends , however, always talked about the sports programs and films on it. They never read any books or went out in the evenings. So he refused to buy a TV set.
Last year, Mark was sixty years old and he retired from his job. His son bought him a TV set.. “It will keep you up to date.” He said.
It’s quite true. Mark watches all the news programs. He knows far more about the world now. And he reads more books, too. In fact , he thinks that he may follow one of the Open University TV courses next year. Perhaps he’ll get a degree in a few years.
There’s only one problem--- he may get quite angry when people interrupt his favorite programs. His friends don’t understand that one can change his ideas when he is 60 years old.
