As we talked, I knew that she began to understand, although slightly, that renewal is part of progress.

“I see, Dad,” said Sarah and jumped off my lap and ran off.

I hope she would remember this. That often, in order to find our real selves underneath the layers of communication and culture with which we cover ourselves year after year, we need to start examining these layers. We need to gently peel some away, as we recognize them to be worthless or unnecessary; or at best, store the ones thrown away mementoes(念想)of our promotion to a better vitality or spirit.

Traffic lights are key tools for regulating traffic now. They are not, however, perfect. Creating such a smooth passage means adjusting a vehicle’s speed so that it always arrives at the lights when they are green. That is theoretically possible, but practically hard. Roadside signs wired to traffic lights can help get the message across a couple hundred meters from a crossing, but such signs are expensive, and are not widespread. Margaret Martonosi and Emmanouil Koukoumidies at Princeton University, and Li-Shiuan Peh at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, however, have an idea that could make the process cheaper and more effective. Instead of a hardwired network of signs, they propose to use mobile-phone applications.

For a driver to benefit, he must load the team’s software, named SignalGuru, into his phone and then put it on a special thing attached to the inside of his car’s windscreen, with the camera lens pointing forward. SignalGuru is designed to detect traffic lights and track their status as red, yellow or green. It broadcasts his information to other phones in the area that are fitted with the same software, and--if there are enough of them, the phones thus each know the status of most of the lights around town. Using this information, SignalGuru is able to calculate the traffic-light schedule for the area and suggest the speed at which a driver should travel in order to avoid red lights.

Tests in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where five drivers were asked to follow the same route for three hours, and in Singapore, where eight drivers were asked to follow one of two routes for 30 minutes, revealed that SingalGuru was capable of predicting traffic-light activity with an accuracy of 98.2% and 96.3% respectively in the two cities.

The Lumiere Brothers opened their Cinematographe in Pairs, to 100 paying customers over 100 years ago, on December 8, 1895. Before the eyes of the stunned, thrilled audience, photographs came to life and moved across flat screen.

So ordinary and routine has this become to us that it takes a determined leap of the imagination to grasp the impact of those first moving images. But it is worth trying, for to understand the initial shock of those images is to understand the extraordinary power and magic of cinema, which has made film the most dynamic, effective art form of the 20th century.

The Lumiere Brothers’ earliest films was a 30-second piece which showed a train flooded with sunshine appears and heads straight for the camera. And that is all that happens. Yet the Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky, described it as a “work of genius”. “As the train approached, panic started in the theatre: people jumped and ran away. The frightened audience could not accept that hey were watching a mere picture. Pictures were still, only reality moved; this must, therefore, be reality. In their confusion, they feared that a real train was about to crush them.”

Early cinema audiences often experienced the same confusion. In time, the idea of film became familiar, the magic was accept--but it never stopped being magic. Film has never lost its unique power to embrace its audiences and transport them to a different world. For Tarkovsky, the key to that magic was the way in which cinema created a dynamic image of the real flow of events. A still picture could only imply the existence of time, while time in a novel passed at the whim of (按……的步调) the reader. But in cinema, the real, objective flow of time was captured.

Thanks to film, future generations will know the 20th century more intimately than any other period. We can only imagine what life was like in classical Greece. With the help of data one can easily know the price of a can of Coke in a supermarket, the speed at which a car is running, the result of a football match or the temperature of a certain day. Obviously, data can make our life easier and more comfortable. What is more important, data seems to be fairer than words or statements. There fore, many people would rather believe data than trust a man.

On the other hand, if people judge things only by data from so-called specific research, aren’t they a little too narrow-minded? The fast pace of modern life and the experience of being cheated make these people forget something important about data.

More often than not, data is just part of the truth. For example, how can you tell that somebody isn’t a good student just because she or he doesn’t get high marks in the final examinations? And how can you refuse to accept that he poetry of William Yeats is really wonderful even though books about his poetry are never best-sellers?

There is no doubt that analyzing the exact data is important to the assessment of an actual event. But the data people get are not always correct. Incorrect data may cause people to make a wrong judgment. Therefore, data does not mean much to people if they do not have the abilities to analyze the data with the knowledge and confidence to judge whether it is true or false.

One more thing, it is impossible for people to measure all the things in life by data. For example, the degree of your feeling happy in your life, the depth of love between you and your friends, and the faith you have in you country. People can only feel them in their hearts but can never express them in data.
