One rainy afternoon, I was on a crosstown bus when a young woman jumped on. She had a child with her who was about three or four years old. The bus was full, bumpy(颠簸的), and it soon got noisy, as her kid began crying — he was upset that he couldn't sit next to his mother. She looked embarrassed.

Then another woman, a little older, stood up and moved so that the mother and child could sit together. The mum smiled as a thank-you. And then three words came out of the older woman's mouth that raised the entire energy of that bus ride: “I've been there.”

Simple, undramatic, and honest. In that moment, it seemed to unite the diverse people of the city. Why? Because almost all experiences are shared human experiences. They're universal. We forget that as we go through life, focused on our own troubles and needs — which are actually less unique than we think.

Sometimes painful past experiences prevent us from wanting to open up to others because we don't want to revisit our own history. But a wonderful way to honor your past hurt is to help comfort another's current pain.

When I was a little girl, we lived on donations from local families and clothing from the " lost and found" baskets. It was shameful for me at the time — I lived in fear of being caught in a friend' s cast-off item.

Even when it was warmer, I refused to take off a layer in the classroom for this reason. Now I don't meet people who are in this exact situation, but I do notice when someone is struggling with financial shame or feels less than other people they meet. And I'm quick to say some version of, "I've been there."

Can the essence of these three words help you make a small difference right now? It can be as simple as volunteering your seat, sharing some helpful advice, or even lightening the mood with a joke when you notice that someone's uncomfortable — because we're all in this together.

4What influence did the older woman's words have on the people around?

     ACausing discomfort.   BBreaking long silence.

CCreating a heated debate.  DInspiring common feelings.

5What does the author think of personal troubles and needs?

AThey are mostly shared experiences.  BThey don't really matter to anyone'

CThey will be forgotten with time.  DThey are unique to each individual.

6Why did the author refuse to take off the coat in the classroom?

ABecause she had the same sweater with others.

BBecause she stole the sweater from someone'

CBecause she liked wearing the coat in summer.

DBecause she felt embarrassed wearing others' clothes.

7What's the best title for the text?

APainful Experiences Are No Big Deal        BThe Best Way to Honor Your Past Hurt

CTrue Happiness Comes from Helping Others DThree Little Words That Bring Us Together

    C

Do you want to look fashionable? Is looking fashionable more important than being comfortable? Many people seem to think so, judging by the things they wear. But fashion is not everything. It is more important to be a healthy and good person.

People go to great lengths to be fashionable. Some people think they have to have a certain body type, so they go on extreme, unhealthy diets in order to change their bodies. In addition, many women wear uncomfortable fashions, such as high-heeled shoes that create blisters, tight body shapers that limit blood flow, and sticky false eyelashes(假睫毛). Men and women alike spend time and money on products that change their natural hair color and use hot irons and blow dryers to curl or straighten their hair. Some people spend several hours a day in front of a mirror. Is fashion important enough to spend so much time and effort on changing how they look like?

If the purpose of fashion is to make a person feel good, it does not make sense that he or she would go through so much discomfort to be fashionable. Fashion should not come first. People should prioritize(优先考虑)being healthy and positive. What people wear does not indicate anything about their personalities. Instead of spending hours choosing a suit, perhaps you should call your friends and do something together. Instead of going on strict diets and starving, why not eat some healthy foods and then exercise? By doing these things, you can keep a healthy lifestyle and truly grow as a person.

    8. Why does the author ask questions in the first paragraph?

     A. To enrich the content.                B. To introduce the topic.

     C. To reflect different attitudes.           D. To make readers think and give their opinions.

    9. Which statement best represents the author’s viewpoint?

     A. Fashion can make people do some unhealthy things.

     B. Fashion increases famous people’s self-respect.

     C. When you look good, you feel good.

     D. People need to diet to lose weight.

    10. Which of the following activities would the author most likely recommend?

     A. Shopping for fashionable clothes.  B. Going on a strict diet with a friend.

     C. Going skating with friends.  D. Changing the hairstyle every week.

    11. The author’s main purpose in writing the text is to .

     A. show readers advantages and disadvantages of dieting

     B. persuade readers to value health more than fashion

     C. tell readers ways to become fashionable

     D. inform readers of the latest fashion trends

Life expectancy in the United States has been in decline for the first time in decades, and public health officials have identified a series of potential causes, including inaccessible health care, rising drug addiction and rates of mental health disorders, and socio-economic factors. Now, a study led by the Yale School of Medicine has attempted to find out the relative impact of two factors most often linked to life expectancy—race and education—by looking at data about 5,114 black and white participants in four U.S. cities.

The lives and deaths among this group of people—who took part in the study approximately 30 years ago when they were in their early 20s—show that the level of education, and not race, is the best predictor of who will live the longest.

Among the 5,114 people followed in the study, 395 had died. These deaths were occurring in working-age people, often with children, before the age of 60. The rates of death among participants in this group did clearly show racial differences, with approximately 9% of blacks dying at an early age compared to 6% of whites. There were also differences in causes of death by race. For instance, black men were significantly more likely to die of murder and white men from AIDS. The most common causes of death across all groups over time were cardiovascular disease and cancer.

But there were also obvious differences in rates of death by education level. Approximately 13% of participants with a high school degree or less education died compared with only approximately 5% of college graduates.

Strikingly, when looking at race and education at the same time, the researchers found that differences related to race almost disappeared: 13.5% of black subjects and 13.2% of white subjects with a high school degree or less died during the course of the study. By contrast, 5.9% of black subjects and 4.3% of whites with college degrees had died.

Therefore, improving overall quality of education is something tangible that can help reverse(扭转) this troubling trend in reduction of life expectancy among middle-aged adults.

    12. What can we learn about the participants in the study?

     A. The whites are more aggressive. B. The whites got higher education.

     C. More blacks than whites died young. D. More whites than blacks died of cancer.

    13. Compared with education, the influence of race on death rates is         .

     A. significant B. unnoticeable C. growing D. long-lasting

    14. What does the underlined word “tangible” probably mean?

     A. Realistic. B. Creative. C. Challenging. D. Temporary.

    15. What can be inferred from the research findings

     A. People can get smart through learning.

     B. One should not discriminate other races.

     C. People don’t enjoy equal rights for education.

     D. One can live longer by getting more education.

18 . Studies have found that when you’re running, biking or walking, you’ll go farther with music on. Music relieves your discomfort and motivates you to stay on. Music gets you to ignore the passing of time. Scientists have shown repeatedly that people judge a period of waiting shorter when music is playing. Dear Taylor,

How are things going with you these days? I’m sorry to tell you that I can’t make it to New York and visit you in June as previously scheduled.

I suppose everybody around the world has been somehow affected by Covid-19, and I’m no exception. The greatest influence on me is that the college entrance exam this year in China has been postponed to July. As a result, my summer vacation won’t begin until mid-July and I have to reschedule my trip to your city. If the virus is under control soon, I will go and see you in January, during my first college winter vacation. I wish it would be convenient for you to meet me then.

Please stay safe and stay in contact with me.

    Yours,

    Li Hua
