        Who can be volunteering?

A Ugandan NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) was formed by members of a rural community in South-west Uganda in 2007. They developed a local school for children aging from 3 to 15 from poor families, and started community based projects that will equip the young villagers with the skills and knowledge to face a safer and brighter future.

The project itself is well integrated into the community and those undertaking volunteering work are always given a warm welcome, especially by the local children who love spending time with volunteers from all ages and backgrounds.

Volunteering at Uganda Lodge is suitable for families, gap year teenagers, seniors etc.

For medical students we can offer you official medical elective course scores with no additional fees charged. Staying at Uganda Lodge could also count for the residential section of the Gold Award and Queens Scout Awards.

    What can I do?

You need to speak English. Even if you are not a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) teacher (although useful!), you can go into the classrooms and make a meaningful difference. Experienced teachers can take over a whole class if they wish, after consulting with the teacher on content.

We now have over 500 students in the Ruhanga Development School and they are in urgent need of teachers. English conversation is needed for the older children in particular, also showing picture books etc. or simply talking to babies helps inspire their mental and physical growth.

Children at our kindergartens and primary schools do love help from our volunteers to learn new rhymes and songs, talk about pictures in books or get inspirations with craftwork and painting.

Find out more about our programme:

    Website: ugandalodge.com

Speaking of the brand new series, from Our Planet producers Silverback Films, Sir David said: “Oceanssunlight, weather and volcanoes - together these powerful yet fragile forces allow life to flourish(茂盛)in astonishing diversity. They make Earth truly unique-a perfect planet. Our planet is one in a billion, a world filled with life. But now, a new determining force is changing the face of Earth: humans. To preserve our perfect planet we must ensure we become a force for good.”

While an exact first-show date has not yet been announced, the show is set to land on BBC One later this year.

As the climate warms, birds are shrinking and their wingspans are growing, according to a new study. Researchers analyzed 70,716 birds from 52 kinds of North American migratory(迁徙的)bird species collected over 40 years. The authors say the study is the largest of its kind and that the findings are important to understanding how animals will adapt to climate change.

"We found almost all of the species were getting smaller." said lead author Brian Weeks, an assistant professor at the University of Michigan.

"The species were pretty diverse, but responding in a similar wav." he said. "The consistency was shocking."

He said studies of animal responses to climate change often focus on shifts in geographical range or timing of life events, like migration and birth. But this study suggests body morphology(形态)is a crucial third aspect.

"That's one major implication," he said, "It's hard to understand how birds will adapt without taking all three of these things into consideration."

The findings showed that from 1978 to 2016, the length of the birds' lower leg bone shortened by 2.4%. Over the same time, the wings lengthened by 1.3%.

The evidence suggests warming temperatures caused the decrease in body size, which in turn caused the increase in wing length.

"Migration is an incredibly taxing thing they do," Mr. Weeks said, explaining that the smaller body size means less energy available for the birds to complete their long journeys.

He says the birds most likely to survive migration were the ones with longer wingspans and smaller bodies.

The scientists aren't exactly sure why warmer temperatures cause birds to shrink. One theory is that smaller animals are better at cooling off, losing body heat more quickly.

28What's the best title for the text?

AAll of the Birds Are Getting Smaller

BAnimals Are Adapting to Climate Change

CClimate Change Is Causing Birds to Shrink

DScientists Are Finding Causes of Warm Climate

29What made Brian Weeks feel astonished?

AIt took 40 years to collect 70,716 birds from North America.

BMany birds are shrinking when responding to the climate change.

CAll migratory bird species were collected to do the important research.

DSo many researchers take part in the largest study to work out the findings.

30What does the underlined word "taxing" most probably mean?

    ATiring. BImportant

    CEasy. DPleasant

31What can we infer from the last paragraph?

When you are sitting in the car, do you ever notice the drivers looking over their shoulders or side to side in the car? Well, they are doing this to check their blind spots! Blind spots take driving extremely difficult and increase the potential for car accidents.

Fourteen-year-old Alaina Gassler from Pennsylvania noticed her mother struggling with blind spots while driving their family car. So she came up with an ingenious solution that won the first place and $25,000 in the Broadcom Masters Competition.

Blind spots are the areas around the car that cannot be directly observed by the driver. There are two kinds of blind spots---on the back of the car that cannot be seen with mirrors, and blind spots at the front of the car as well.

When a driver is changing lanes, he has to look over his shoulder through the side windows to make sure that there is no vehicle in the blind spot. This invisible area is big enough to hide a car!

The other blind spot is created in the front by the A-pillar(柱子)---the material on either side on the windshield(挡风玻璃)that holds the glass and forms the frame of the car. In some cars, this pillar can be quite thick. Usually, people or cyclists can be hidden by this pillar.

Alaina's design was to get rid of the blind spot created by the front A-pillar of the car, the one that helps hold up the windshield.

She put a camera on the outside passenger side of the car which then sent the photos to a projector above the drivers' head. Then, she covered the inside of the pillar in reflective fabric onto which the image was projected. Basically, her device made the pillar "see through" and removed the blind spot on that side of the car.

Alnina's solution is very creative and could be improved by using LCD displays that will make it easier to see during day time as well.

32What can be learned about blind spots during driving?

AThey call for careful driving. BThey make driving thrilling.

CThey are many in kinds. DThey can't be get rid of.

33Which of the following can replace the underlined word "ingenious" in paragraph 2?

    Ainteresting Bcreative

    Cinspiring Dinvisible

34How did Alaina solve the problem?

ABy improving the A-pillar. BBy using a mirror on the outside of the A-pillar.

CBy relying on LCD displays. DBy using a camera to capture images.

    Why Do Brides Wear White

In many societies the color white has been associated with purity and virtue, and that is one reason why some brides choose to wear white, especially in the West. Usually, you will hear that brides wear white because “it’s a tradition”. But, historically, white was not the only color considered for wedding dresses. 36

For many centuries in Western societies, wedding dresses had different colors. 37 Brides tended to buy a wedding dress that could be worn again, or they simply wore the best dress they already owned. And white is not practical: it is difficult to keep clean and is therefore not ideal for many situations or for repeated wear.

Many brides chose to wear dresses of other colors for their wedding and beyond. 38 They do so largely thanks to a trend that started with Queen Victoria’s 1840 wedding to Prince Albert.

39 Although not in as many different media as we have now, they still had a tendency to be trendsetting. So Victoria chose to wear a white gown (女礼服)—reportedly to show off the fine detailed Honiton lace produced by the British lace industry, which was depressed at the time. Her fashion choice was widely reported in newspapers and magazines. 40 Eventually, the trend of a white wedding gown spread across all economic levels and it was strengthened as “tradition” in the 20th century.

ASo why do so many of today’s brides wear white?

BBut why are brides so particular about their dresses?

CRoyal weddings in those years received a lot of reporting.

DIt reflected the growth of the wedding industry at that time.

E.It soon influenced domestic and international wedding trends.

F.In fact, other colors were chosen far more frequently than white.

G.This was for reasons of being practical as much as anything else.
