Martin Lewis, a Money Saving Expert, told viewers on Good Morning Britain how they could save £400 on their energy bills this morning. He gave a warning to N-Power customers explaining how to avoid a costly price hike and save money through making a simple change.
Martin warned that N-Power customers will experience a rise in costs which will see their energy bills rise. The company was increasing prices by 5.5 per cent for its customers. This could see them paying an average of £1,230 per year on their fuel bills.
However, through switching energy companies, the lower possible price would be around ~ 810,
Martin explained. He advised existing customers of N-Power to go and do a comparison. By following
Martin' s advice, you could make an over £400 saving.
As for N-Power, Martin said: "I wouldn’t be on it. I just wouldn’t."
As part of his time on the program, Martin also listed a number of other savings. Earlier this week, Martin explained how to get cash compensation for train delays. Martin said: "The golden rule is that every time your train is late, check if you' re due 25 to 100 per cent back via Delay Repay. Twenty of the thirty rail firms, and most of the main ones, are in the Delay Repay plan. This means you just fill in the online claim form or get a form from the station ( you’ve 28 days to claim) and if the train' s cancelled or over an hour late you’ll usually get a full compensation in cash not vouchers (代金券), half an hour late 50 per cent, and a few firms give 25 per cent for a 15-minute delay."
    24. Which of the following best explains "hike" underlined in Paragraph 1?
    A. A sharp decrease. B. A shameful cheat. C. An increase in cost. D. An unreasonable cut.
    25. What does Martin Lewis suggest people do about saving energy expense.'?
    A. Change the power supplier. B. Adopt more alternative energy.
    C. Reduce the power consumption. D. Buy efficient household appliances.
    26. What' s the purpose of the last paragraph?
    A. To tell us how to claim compensation for train delays.
    B. To tell us how to avoid missing the train. C. To show benefits from rail firms.
    D. To show how to get an online form from the station.
    27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Tips on Living a Green Life B. Some Ways to Save in Daily Life
    C. Late Longer, Compensated More D. Comparison Leading to Money Saving
    C
It is one of the oldest magic tricks in the book – a magician locks a woman in a box, with her head and feet sticking out from either end, and saws (锯) it in half. But when she finally jumps out of the box the woman is unharmed. This trick was introduced nearly a century ago. It has been around for some time, but it never goes wrong. Why is it so successful? The answer is simple: the human mind is easily fooled.
Our brain processes the world around us based on information that sensory organs (感官), including the eyes, pick up. For instance, when we see a cow or a horse standing behind a tree, we automatically “fill in” the part of the animal’s body that is hidden from our sight. “So the brain is taking this kind of very sparse (匮乏的) information about the world and it’s generating this rich world by filling in information,” Stephen Macknik, scientist at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Arizona, US, told Science magazine.
But since our brains are filling in the gaps, sometimes they get it wrong. They tend to be driven by your previous experiences and you expect things to go as they have in the past even if sometimes they do not. This tendency explains magicians’ success in fooling people with well-known coin tricks. For example, when you see a magician throw a coin up and down in one hand and then fake a coin throw to the other hand, you would naturally believe that the coin is in the other hand. Apart from the information gaps, magicians also use the “blind spots” theory when doing their shows. The most well known experiment demonstrating (证明) this theory is called the “invisible gorilla (大猩猩)”, in which volunteers watch a video of two basketball teams. They are asked to count how many times the teams wearing white shirts pass the ball. In the meantime, a person dressed as a gorilla walks onto the court. But shockingly, half of the viewers don’t notice the gorilla, even when they appear to be looking directly at it.
Magicians employ this tactic (招数), what they call “misdirection”, in almost every one of their acts. They direct our attention somewhere else using comedy and music, which can make us miss stuff during the performance.
    28. The magic trick is mentioned in the first paragraph to ______.
    A. introduce the steps of the magic trick
    B. prove magic tricks seldom go wrong
    C. reveal how magic tricks are designed
    D. get us to wonder how magicians trick the mind
    29. We can conclude from the article that the human mind is easily fooled because our brain ______.
    a. may have difficulty remembering what we just saw
    b. fills in information about the real world
    c. is influenced by our previous experiences
    d. processes far more information than our sensory organs pick up
    A. a, b B. b, c C. a, d D. c, d
    30. During the “invisible gorilla” experiment, people watching the video ignore the “gorilla” because ______.
    A. they don’t look directly at it
    B. they are not interested in it
    C. they are too focused on counting
    D. they consider it to be a distraction
    31. Why do magicians usually use comedy and music when they play magic tricks?
    A. To get viewers to stay focused on the show.
    B. To make the show more fun and exciting.
    C. To draw viewers’ attention away from a secret action.
    D. To create information gaps between magicians and viewers.

    D
Very few of us become fluent in another language by studying it in high school.
I went to university and then moved across the country, pursued a demanding (要求高的) career, married and raised children. I made an effort to maintain the little bit of French that I learned in school, but eventually realized that this was pointless. I was well aware that new languages are best learned when young, and that our abilities in that regard decline with age. However, just before my 50th birthday, I signed up for French classes.
After I was tested to see which group I belonged in, I was placed at almost the introductory level.
When I looked around at my first Saturday morning class, I was struck by how many of the students were learning French as a third, fourth, or even fifth language. Contrary to (与……相反) my assumption that learning a new language was impossibly difficult, there were people who learned new languages as a matter of course. I found that it really was true that certain linguistic (语言的) abilities fade with age. While I’d always thought of myself as a quick learner, that was no longer the case. I absorbed new vocabulary very slowly. What I learned one week seemed to slip away as soon as I learned the next skill. I looked up the same words and language structures (语言结构) over and over again.
Now, a couple of years in, I can listen to the news in French and catch 90 percent of it on the first try, read a novel if the language is not too difficult, and hold up my end of a conversation if it doesn’t go too fast. Who knows what I might still accomplish? I’ve learned so much beyond grammar and vocabulary. I’ve met people from around the world and all walks of life (各行各业) who have the courage to make fools of themselves in order to learn something new. I’ve been taught by patient and inspirational teachers from many corners of the world, including France, Eastern Europe, the Caribbean and Africa. Listening to the news as it is presented to the people of France, I have a renewed understanding of how something can look completely different from another perspective. I’ve learned that a language is not just a set of words, but a way of thinking.
But most of all, I’ve learned that it really is never too late to learn something new.
    32. When the author took her first French class, she _______.
    A. was ashamed that she was learning it at such an old age
    B. was afraid of being unable to learn it
    C. was curious about her teachers and classmates
    D. was encouraged by her classmates
    33. What was the biggest challenge for the author when learning French?
    A. She found the language structures puzzling.
    B. She often confused French with English.
    C. She couldn’t learn things as quickly as before.
    D. She made a fool of herself when having conversations in French.
    34. After studying French for a few years, the author ______.
    A. became a fluent French speaker
    B. became aware of different cultural perspectives
    C. considered listening to news the best way to learn a language
    D. can teach others French vocabulary and grammar
    35. What message does the author want to convey with the article?
    A. People’s abilities to learn languages decline with age.
    B. Age is not a problem for those who are determined to learn new things.
    C. It is important to hang out with different kinds of people.
    D. Practice makes perfect when it comes to learning a language.

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Talk shows are television programs in which a host sits down with entertainers, newsmakers, or other people, to talk. 36
This type of program, sometimes known as a chat show, was one of the earliest formats (形式) created for television. Early hosts, such as Jack Paar and Garry Moore, combined interviews with short humorous pieces of acting, and improvised (即兴创作) audience participation. 37 The audience would be entertained by the anecdotes of the stars or the improvised funny remarks of the host.
38 Hosts such as Dick Cavett, David Frost, and Tom Snvder all became household names through their personal interview styles. Guests on these programs were encouraged to do more than simply promote an upcoming film or musical album. Cavett and Snvder were especially skillful at the "talking heads (发言者头部特写)" format.
By the 1980s, the talk show format had once again changed from academic interviews to aggressive arguments, with hosts such as Jerry Springe and Oprah Winfrey often booking controversial guests. 39 Others changed their formats back to the traditionally friendly guest-host relationship.
Modem talk shows are usually run at night hosted by such names as David Letterman and Craig Ferguson. They are often a combination of musical performances, audience interaction, and short celebrity interviews. Celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres or Rachael Ray often host talk shows, since they can be produced quickly. 40
    A. Therefore, they won' t affect the talents' other work.
    B. Several of the controversial shows did not last for long.
    C. There are a wide variety of talk shows on television.
    D. Local television stations also produce their own versions.
    E. Others focus on a discussion between the host and the guest.
    F. The key was to invite popular stars for live interviews with an intelligent host.
    G. By the late 1960s, the format became more focused on the interviews themselves.

Challenges of life remind me of my days in senior high school which I joined in the military
training. It was the first time I have lived far away from my home, so I found difficult to fit in. And the trained officer was strict with me. I once think I could not stick to the end. And anyway, I succeeded. The trials made it much easy for me to adapt to life, and the difficulty I came across have now all become a precious memory in my life. Text 10
W:Where can you look if you want to know how tall the tallest person in the world is or who the oldest person in the world is?There is only one place where you’ll find all these information and that’s in the Guinness Book of Records. This morning,we have someone from the Guinness Company that produces that famous book,Thomas Loel.Welcome to the program.Thomas.

M:Yes.That’s exactly what happened. And this made Sir Hugh think there must be other people in the same situation who wanted this kind of information. He thought that like himself, people would be interested in finding facts about records to satisfy their curiosity.
W:So the idea for a book of records was born. And when did the first book come out?
M:A few years later in 1955.So to answer your first question, the tallest person in the world is 231.7cm tall and the oldest person is Jeanne L.Calment who was born in February,1875.
W:There are also some rather strange records, aren’t there,Thomas?
M:Yes.That’s right.Did you know,Sue,the shortest time that is taken...
