1、 In the mid-2000s, Waze Mobile co-founder Ehud Shabtai received a cutting-edge (尖端的) gift from girlfriend: a GPS. The expensive gift was supposed to be helpful. But straight out of the box, it was already out of date.
Shabtai, a coding enthusiast, had an immediate reaction to reinvent. Shabtai’s solution? To build an app. With 80 million monthly active users globally and nearly 400,000 superusers who function much like Wikipedia volunteer editors (editing maps rather than words), Waze Mobile caught the eye of Google as a revolutionary approach to navigation (导航).
Acquired by Google in 2013, Waze’s value mainly lies in its high rate of user involvement. Unlike traditional navigation apps that simply show directions, Waze asks its users to report accidents and other road conditions in real time, so other users can avoid the traffic by using an alternative route.
The goal behind Waze’s approach is an ambitious one: not just avoid traffic, but end it altogether. Waze is finding new ways to put its loyal and active user base to use to make that vision a reality, including a plan to make carpooling (拼车) cool.
To be sure, traffic jams are troubling people all over the world. Waze has been quietly ahead of the game for some time. In 2013, when Waze was just a small digital-mapping business with limited resources it had something Google Maps and other competitors didn’t: richer GPS guidance thanks to its stream of live traffic reports from users.
These users were the basis of Shabtai’s plan to solve for his GPS device’s “silent” hardware: he grounded the app in software that could be perpetually updated by users, anywhere and anytime.
Waze Carpool is going straight to the heart of traffic jams, trying to get more drivers off the road and into carpools. The app has already connected tens of thousands of rideseekers with drivers willing to ferry them along a shared route, and that trend could be the answer to a traffic-free future.

3、On average, primary school children in England have at least three sugary snacks a day, Public Health England (PHE) found. This means that the sugar they consume is three times more than the recommended maximum.
Children between the ages of 4 and 10 consume 51.2% of sugar from unhealthy snacks. PHE has launched a campaign, Change4Life, to encourage parents to look for healthier snacks of no more than 100 calories, and to limit them to two a day. The campaign advises parents to give their children a maximum of two snacks a day, with each containing no more than 100 calories. The campaign will also offer parents special suggestions on a range of healthier snacks—ones with 100 calories or fewer—at selected supermarkets, PHE said.
PHE said it had also improved its app so that it could mark the content of sugar, salt and fat in food and drinks. Dr Alison Tedstone told the BBC she hoped the campaign would help parents to choose healthier snacks for their children. “If you wander through a supermarket, you can see much more goods being sold as snacks than ever before,” she said, “It’s a common phenomenon that kids’ lunchboxes are full of snacks, leading to a lot of calories for lunch. Our research shows that parents usually appreciate a rule of thumb (经验法则). However, they are surprised to know how much sugar their children are consuming in snacks now.”
Justine Roberts, founder of Mumsnet, said, “The intake (摄入量) of sugar that kids are getting from snacks and sugary drinks alone is pretty astonishing, and it can often be difficult to distinguish which snacks are healthy and which are not. The rule of thumb from Change4Life can help parents make their decision correctly and wisely. ”

4、 Auld Lang Syne is a song that everyone drunkenly sings, which marks the start to a brand new year. No one ever seems to know the words (something about forgetting old acquaintances?) or what they mean (why would we want to forget people?), but, in America,it's as much a part of New Years' tradition as wine. But why?
The lyrics(歌词) to the song come from a poem written by the great Scottish poet Robert Bums in 1788. Its title is believed to be an old Scottish way of saying “a long time ago. ’’ Phrases like “In the days of auld lang syne” also appear in other Scottish fairy tales and poems, usually as a way of saying “Once Upon a Time. ”
While it still causes confusion, it is believed that the opening lines of the song are meant to be rhetorical(夸张的);“Should auld acquaintance be forgotten, and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgotten, and auld lang syne?” therefore means we should have a drink in honor of whatever is passing, and remember old friends.
When the Scots immigrated to America in the 19th century, they brought the song with them. But its great popularity can be largely due to the Canadian bandleader Guy Lombardo.
In 1965, he explained how he himself came to associate the song with the end of the year to Life magazine:
“Auld Lang Syne is our theme song—and was long before anyone ever heard us on the radio. In our particular part of western Ontario, where there’s a large Scottish population, it was traditional for bands to end every dance with Auld Lang Syne. We didn't think it was known here.
If you want to see the singer in action, check out his final performance on the eve of 1977, after performing for 48 years in a row.
1.How might people feel when first hearing the song Auld Lang Syne?
A.Confused.
B.Moved.
C.Energetic.
D.Comfortable.

A.To hope for good luck.
B.To celebrate the New Year.
C.In honor of Robert Bums.
D.In memory of the past.

A.He created the song Auld Lang Syne.
B.He made the song Auld Lang Syne more popular.
C.He brought the song Auld Lang Syne to America.

D.Why do People Sing Auld Lang Syne on New Year Eve?

9答案:
Dear Tom,
Long time no see. As it won’t be long before I graduate from high school, I have to select an ideal university in advance, which makes me really annoyed. My parents and I failed to reach the agreement on whether to go to another city for further education.
In my parents’ eyes, I’m still the little boy who is so fragile and innocent that I can’t be away from home. They believe without their tending, my life will be in a mess. However, I have been a young adult and anxious about independence and liberty. I have determined to prove myself via leaving for the university away from Tianjin. Furthermore, living in a strange but new city can not only broaden my horizon but also improve my communication ability.
For you have been away from America and studied in China for a few years, I really need your advice on how to persuade my parents to be in favor of my ideal and convince them that I can intend to my safety and health.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Jin
