Visitors still stop at the old house in Scituate, Massachusetts. But the house is not what brings them there. What they want to see is the old stone well beside it—and the iron-bound water bucket that's put on its edge.
Two hundred years ago, this farmhouse was the home of Samuel Woodworth. During the long summers of his childhood, young Samuel would often pause at the well. It was a welcome break, especially on a hot afternoon. On such a day he would eagerly draw a bucketful of cold water and satisfy his thirst with a refreshing drink.
When he was fourteen, Woodworth left Scituate for New York City, where he started his own newspaper. Later he worked as an editor at other newspapers and magazines while writing novels, plays, and poetry in his spare time. His life was busy, and he rarely had time to visit the family farm.
But Woodworth never stopped thinking of his Scituate home. After work one evening, Woodworth poured himself a glass of city water. After that, he remarked to his wife, Lydia, how wonderful it would be to have a long, cool drink from the oaken bucket at his father's well. Lydia had a suggestion: Why not put it to poetry?
It was a suggestion Woodworth could not resist. That night he wrote The Bucket. In it he captured the world of his childhood on a hot summer day and the simple joy of stopping for a drink at his father's well.
His poem was an instant success. It seemed to touch everyone who had ever been homesick. At the height of its popularity, The Old Oaken Bucket (as it came to be called) was translated into four languages, and the words were set to a popular tune of the time. Over the years, countless people have read or sung Woodworth's ode to his boyhood. Today it is the official song of Scituate, Massachusetts.
21. Why does the author use flashback (倒叙) in Paragraph 2?
A. To help readers appreciate the well water.
B. To help readers enjoy city life.
C. To help readers understand how hard Woodworth was.
D. To help readers learn about Woodworth's childhood life.
22. What was Woodworth's purpose for writing the poem?
A. To share his opinion. B. To introduce his hometown.
C. To express his emotion. D. To make some complaints.
23. What can we infer from the text?
A. The water in the well tasted better than that in the city.
B. The well and the water had a deep impression on Samuel's mind.
C. Woodworth's wife reminded him of the well and suggested putting it to poetry.

Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.
Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.
Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. W ithout knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin -offs including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Even non-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products of technological developments in the space industry!
While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human beings to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist.
While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.
28. Why does the author mention the questions?
A. To express his doubts. B. To compare different ideas.
C. To introduce points for discussion. D. To describe the conditions on Earth.
29. What is the reason for exploring space based on?
A. Humans are nature born to do so. B. Humans have the tendency to fight.
C. Humans may find new sources of food. D. Humans don't like to stay in the same place.
30. The underlined word “spin-offs” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to ___.
A. survival chances B. unexpected benefits
C. potential resources D. physical possessions
31. Which of the statements can best sum up the passage?
A. Space exploration has created many wonders.
B. Space exploration provides the best value for money.
C. Space exploration can benefit science and technology.
D. Space exploration may help us avoid potential problems on Earth.

A new study has shown how computers and robots powered by artificial intelligence can read human eye movements to "read" human personalities.
The eyes, they say, are the windows to the soul. And if that is true, computers and robots powered by sophisticated artificial intelligence algorithms(算法)may soon have the ability to peer into your soul. That is the result of a new study on the connection between eye movements and personality, conducted by neuroscience researchers based at the University of South Australia and Published in the scientific Journal Frontiers in Neuroscience.
"Eye movements during an everyday task predict aspects of our personality," wrote the researchers, led by University of South Australia neuroscientist Tobias Loetscher, whose team follows 42 study subjects around the university campus recording their eye movements, then determines their personality traits(特点)with "well-established questionnaires" for determining personality type, according to a summary of the study published by the site Science Daily.
The researchers fed the data into their Al algorithms and found that computers running the algorithms were able to record human eye movements and immediately determine a person's major personality traits, such as "neuroticism, extraversion(外向),agreeableness, conscientiousness, as well as perceptual curiosity", the scientists wrote.
"The new findings could improve the way human beings interact with their computers and other high-tech devices, even robots, allowing for more natural and realistic social interactions with machines," Loetscher said.
"People are always looking for improved, personalized services. Today's robots and computers are not socially aware so they cannot adapt to non-verbal information," Loetscher said in a statement quoted by Indian Express. This research provides opportunities to develop robots and computers so that they can become more natural, and better at interpreting human social signals."
The study revealed previously undiscovered relations between specific personality characteristics and specific eye movement tendencies, according to a summary in Britain's Daily Mail newspaper.
32. What do the underlined words "peer into" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. understand B. stare at C. search for D. concern about
33. How did the researchers conduct the research?
A. It was carried out in a lab. B. 42 subjects' eye movements were recorded.
C. The students' daily movements were tracked.
D. Its subjects' personalities were determined by computer.
34. According to Tobias Loetscher, what can we know?
A. Robots and computers are socially conscious.
B. People care less about improved, personalized services.
C. Today's robots and computers can accustom to non-verbal information.
D. The discovery will improve the interaction between human beings and machines.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Human Personality Traits B. What Human Eye Movements Are
C. Tell Personalities by Eye Movements. D. How Humans and Machines Interact

Dear Sir / Madam,
I’m writing in response to your advertisement in the Bingley Times in March 2nd. I’m very interesting in joining your Dance classes and would be grateful unless you could answer a few questions I have.
Your advertisement states that a number in the classes was kept to a minimum. How much people are there in each class? As I work every day until 5 o’clock, I would also like to know the times of the classes. In addition, I’d like to know if I need any special shoes for the classes, and I’d greatly appreciate if you could tell me where to buy any necessary equipments. Finally, as it’s my intention to attend to these classes regularly, could you also send me details of prices or membership fees?

Dear David,
I’m glad that you’re interested in the silk culture of China and the Belt and Road Initiative. I’ll be more than happy to tell you something about them.
As a matter of fact, silk has a long history in China, which dates back to the Neolithic Age. It is known to all that it is made of silkworm cocoon. So it is not only elegant but also environmental. Therefore, silk attracts people all over the world. From Han Dynasty. China opened up The Silk Road, which greatly promoted the communication between China and the other countries in the world.
At present, our government has put forward “The Belt and Road” Initiative, which encourages cooperation between China and other countries. There is no doubt that it will have a great effect on all the relevant countries and contribute to the economic and cultural development of the world.
I’m looking forward to your reply.

D. Not many people paid much attention to the poem at first.
24. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Old Oaken Bucket B. Living in New York
C. Growing up on the Farm D. Good Suggestions from Wife

It’s a late Saturday afternoon in early March, and I am sweating in search of the only gift my son wants from Los Angeles: a 41 to the homes of the stars such as Brad Pitt and Jet Li.

“Did you meet any 59 , Dad?” he asked.
Now I know what to tell him.

Thank you for your kind attention. Please reply at your earliest convenience.
Yours faithfully,
Elaine Richards
